Blue Ridge Pig Barbecue Review: O’ Blue Ridge Pig, Where Art Thou?

As far as I’m concerned, there is one barbecue place in town: Blue Ridge Pig

Sure, there is Big Jim’s and Belmont Barbeque. Big Jim’s is out of the question because they have a website (not cool if you are a barbeque place) and their pit bbq, while excellent, can only be sampled via catered events. I swear they “pull” their restaurant barbeque out of a can. I haven’t been to Belmont Barbeque, but you know, who cares? At least I’m being honest.

Driving to the Blue Ridge Pig is quite the chore. You will have to drive at least 25 minutes from Charlottesville to Nellysford, VA. The address is 2198 Rockfish Valley Hwy., Nellysford, VA 22958 if you want to map it. I really suggest route 151 for a scenic drive. It’s basically at the bottom of Wintergreen.

Once you are there you will realize the drive was worth it. Long gone are UVA’s bright and gay Jcrewies. Look out back. That shack smokes incessantly with tomorrow’s Chicken, Pig or what have you. Have the owner show you the meat. Heed the warning “you will smell like smoke all day” because you will. I know from experience. It’s worth it and I heard that pig smoke is the latest Axe flavor, anyway. Don’t forget you order inside.

The wall is littered with business cards, almost in Bohemian shack fashion. This place IS the place to order barbeque. There isn’t a fancy kitchen, just several nice ladies topping your sandwich or ribs with appropriate goods. You will have to wait. You will be on country time. But when it comes…

The pulled pork is pure esctasy in the mouth (that’s a nice way of avoiding the word sex)

Good barbeque isn’t about the sauce, it’s about the tenderness and infusion of the smoked wood taste. Blue Ridge Pig does it right. So well, in fact, that despite the flatulation risk, I’m going there again and again. The Blue Ridge Pig folks ensure that your barbeque experience is as homely and amazing as possible.
Go there and be happy. Come back to cVillain and give us your thoughts!

Love the BRP, have for many years. I especially like the smoked turkey, potato salad, beans and limeade. Frankly, It may be the only place in America I eat potato salad or beans. As for Thor’s statement about BBQ joints and websites, he may want to google “BBQ Lockhart Texas” and see if any of those joints have web sites. (I believe most do)
Lockhart is the BBQ capitol of Texas.

The BRP is some of the best barbecue I’ve ever had in my life. Period. It’s damn good.

Belmont BBQ was a huge letdown for me. I ate there almost 10 times, always wishing it would be better, but it never was. The folks are so damn nice too.

Big Jim’s doesn’t even taste as good as focking Lloyd’s in the plastic tubs from the Food Lion.

Ditto for the BBQ from Wayside. Shit sucks.

I’ve tried to eat Jinx’s for 8 years. Motherfucker is never open. I have high expectations though.

As good as BRP is I still have a heavenly affinity for Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse, NY. They have branched out now and changed but in the early 1990’s that place was unparalleled on earth planet. It’s ridiculous. If you’re ever in the ‘Cuse, you owe it to yourself to get over and get some at the Dino. You won’t be disappointed.

I’m not big on Texas BBQ. That Wonderbread shit is focking geigh.

Dinosaur is in NYC and Rochester NY too. Great Brisket, Great Ribs, Better atmosphere. I’m bound for Texas BBQ this month, I shall see what all the fuss is about.

Brother Jimmy’s in NYC is amazing. Around here, I’d agree that Blue Ridge Pig and Spry’s make the best attempt. I’ve heard that Big Jim’s catered cue is really good, but I’ve only been unfortunate enough to try the stuff that was in the restaurant.

    @14 spry’s made, past tense.

big jim’s (now winky’s) restaurant actually gets its bbq from big jim’s catering, so it’s exactly the same.

spry’s & big jim’s are/were vastly different; i can see how one wouldn’t like both. i do/did though. like not love.

@12 if you’re not a misguided fan of that wonderbread shit (like kyle is), don’t bother with jinx’s.

/likes plastic tub bbq, esp from TJ’s
