As far as I’m concerned, there is one barbecue place in town: Blue Ridge Pig
Sure, there is Big Jim’s and Belmont Barbeque. Big Jim’s is out of the question because they have a website (not cool if you are a barbeque place) and their pit bbq, while excellent, can only be sampled via catered events. I swear they “pull” their restaurant barbeque out of a can. I haven’t been to Belmont Barbeque, but you know, who cares? At least I’m being honest.
Driving to the Blue Ridge Pig is quite the chore. You will have to drive at least 25 minutes from Charlottesville to Nellysford, VA. The address is 2198 Rockfish Valley Hwy., Nellysford, VA 22958 if you want to map it. I really suggest route 151 for a scenic drive. It’s basically at the bottom of Wintergreen.
Once you are there you will realize the drive was worth it. Long gone are UVA’s bright and gay Jcrewies. Look out back. That shack smokes incessantly with tomorrow’s Chicken, Pig or what have you. Have the owner show you the meat. Heed the warning “you will smell like smoke all day” because you will. I know from experience. It’s worth it and I heard that pig smoke is the latest Axe flavor, anyway. Don’t forget you order inside.
The wall is littered with business cards, almost in Bohemian shack fashion. This place IS the place to order barbeque. There isn’t a fancy kitchen, just several nice ladies topping your sandwich or ribs with appropriate goods. You will have to wait. You will be on country time. But when it comes…
The pulled pork is pure esctasy in the mouth (that’s a nice way of avoiding the word sex)
Good barbeque isn’t about the sauce, it’s about the tenderness and infusion of the smoked wood taste. Blue Ridge Pig does it right. So well, in fact, that despite the flatulation risk, I’m going there again and again. The Blue Ridge Pig folks ensure that your barbeque experience is as homely and amazing as possible.
Go there and be happy. Come back to cVillain and give us your thoughts!
