La Taza: Best Mojito in Cville

mojito

There is no better way to enjoy a warm Spring evening than to have a drink outdoors. This week’s warm weather brought about a passion for an old friend, Señor Mojito. A Cuban cocktail that will set the mood for any wonderful warm evening, it is comprised of the following ingredients:

-Simple syrup
-Fresh mint
-Club soda
-Fresh limes (for decorative and juice making purposes)
-Rum

I highly recommend this recipe from Williams-Sonoma if you want to pursue this fantastic cocktail at home.

My first experience at La Taza last night proved to be quite nice, and it can all be attributed to their mojito. It was a perfectly balanced mixture of the ingredients above, albeit served in a plastic bar cup. Most bartenders suffer a secret love-affair with one of the Mojito components which usually leads to an overpowering “rummy” or “minty” taste. Asides from the “Mexican all-inclusive resort style plastic cup”, it was the perfect refreshment to assist in the enjoyment of a warm Cville evening.

My only recommendations would be to leave the squeezed limes in the drink, add a hair more of rum, and to serve it in a low-ball glass. The myriad green colors contrasting against the clear liquid and glass surrounding them creates an exquisite beauty which will seduce you again and again.

With your suggestions, I am going to make it my mission to uncover a better mojito in Cville. Yes that’s right, cocoNUT is turning into a virtual, internet-powered pseudo-alcoholic in pursuit of true “investigative-journalism”. GAME ON!

Glad to see other mojito aficionado. Let me reccomend my recipe:

    1.5-2 shots white rum (Bacardi)
Squeeze half a lime into the cup, throw it in and squeeze the other half in but toss it
    8-12 mint leaves (fresh)
1.5-2 shots of simple syrup (NOTE: I suggest boiling raw, unbleached sugar into water in about 1 parts sugar to water by volume)

BEFORE adding any thing else, use a spoon of wooden ladel to mash the mint leaves against the bottom of the glass. Try not to muddle the lime but focus on getting out as much mint taste as possible, which is aided by the rum.

Ice all the way to the top.
    Top up with Club soda
Mix again to move the mint leaves around and into the ice
Finish with a dash of simple syrup applied gently to the top of the drink

I may post my summer drink menu up soon after some more “beta testing.” Enjoy!

Ha! I challenge you to grind the mint with a mortar and pestle instead of smashing it in the glass. The oils come out of the mint, VERY NAICE! I think a summer drink list would be terrific!

On another note, I was at Zocalo last night and had multiple rounds of terrific mojitos, served in a bar glass none the less! The one-upped Taza following the recommendations I made above. They were great, and the caipirinha afterwards was also good.

    Keep it up Zocalo!

And yes…now I feel strange for writing a post on Taza…this motivates me to create a vote for Best Mojito in Cville. I would love to hear from the people. If you have any recommendations on restaurants/bars to choose from for Cville’s best Mojitos, please let us know, and also include a line about why they are so great. More to come!
