We started an interesting discussion in our forums and it sees as though “newtocville” highlighted an interesting fact:
Thanks for the heads up - certainly a good site full of ideas. Thanks to all for helping me find a good place to drink!!!
I still haven’t been able to beat McGrady’s. The other night I went with friends and ordered 15 beers and 5 appetizers. $28 bucks!!! Haha - it doesn’t get any better!
This is insane! I’m gonna check it out. It is the self-proclaimed “Best Happy Hour in Town- Hands Down.”

I’ve been there a couple times, although not for happy hour. Still, both times I’ve seen/interacted with the owner (manager?) and seen him pass out freebies (a lot of them) and really go out of his way to make people happy.
McGrady’s might be cheap, but I don’t like their location and the place can have an odd vibe to it. Sometimes, the patrons seem a little “tough” and other times, it seems like a college bar, with people drinking just to get wasted.
Maybe I should have given the place more of a chance, but a few visits since the space changed hands is all I needed.
$1 domestic draughts during Happy Hour, with all appetizers priced at $2.75 (even those normally running ~$8). Weeknight specials like $3 Irish Carbombs, $4 pitchers of Killians, etc.
What more could you want? Atmosphere is nonexistent, but if you have a good group of friends to go with, how could you complain.
Or maybe you like to pretend you’re in Manhattan by shelling out $10 for a fruity cocktail at Kiki (which, despite its best efforts, has zero atmosphere as well).
Wait… I thought going to get drunk with your friends was the whole point of going!
this ‘newtocville’ guy seems to really know what he’s talking about!!
i do agree that mcgrady’s is truly a great time when you’re with a group of good friends - after speaking to one of the owners a few times he has made it clear that one of their goals is to establish a positive image. he specifically mentioned that they’d like to get rid of the ‘tough’ crowd and make it similar to a place you’d go on the downtown mall or midtown/west main street/whatever you call it these days.
I’m pretty familiar with them, since they’ve been our kickball sponsor bar.
The prices are obviously fantastic. As for the tough guy image, it used to be a biker bar, and some of those patrons are still around. They’ve banned multiple (I want to say north of 30) people for life in an effort to clean it up.
The owners are fantastic, and very friendly. The patio is awesome, and probably what will keep that place in business compared to the other bars there that have come and gone.
Hey Chad! Kickball rocks.
Ah! That probably explains my impression after visits early on vs. those who have gone there lately.
It still seems a little bit like a college bar to me. I imagine that the only other bars that have irish car bombs on special might be on The Corner.
As for Kiki, I wasn’t a fan of the mangement that opened it, so I never went there.
Kiki has quite the crazy crowd. They make good drinks too.
The college bar bit .. hmm. I’ve seen a mixed crowd in there for happy hour, but there’s certainly that element.
Especially when UVA is in session .. that place on Friday/Saturday nights is a zoo. I don’t even bother trying to go in, it’s just too packed and service inevitably suffers. Glad to see they’re doing well though, they certainly deserve the success.
lilith: Thanks for the kickball shoutout. I assume you’ve played/or are going to?
I’ve played, and I’m not trying to brag, but I am awesome at catching balls. My secret weapon? Size A! No bounce-back!
I’ve been to McGrady’s a few times to drink before going across to see shows at Outback, but never for happy hour. $1 domestic drafts? Whoa. I should go there sometime.
Ethan, please put up a post about the State of the Outback Lodge! I haven’t been to a show there in a couple of years, and I haven’t been to a “date function” at Down Under in longer than that. I could obviously just go to a concert myself (not to a date function, duh), but I think we’d all benefit from your report!
[…] Best of 2007. (Aqui Es Mexico didn’t win?!?!!?!?!?) as well as some expected ones (Happy Hour at McGrady’s). Also, Splendora’s again people, what are you thinking!? Charlottesville wants to hear your […]
