Jaberwoke Closed?

Ethan reports:

This is perhaps late and no one will read this, but it appears that Jaberwoke on the corner has also closed.

Is this true? Does this have anything to do with the “dress code?” UVA’s corner could look drastically different come 2008 if we also think about the rumored sale of Biltmore and O’Neils.

    It’s true.

From what I’ve heard they haven’t sold it though. I’ve heard rumors of expanding to the upstairs, with the possibility of an upstairs porch (although that sounded like it was a longshot.)

That location is cursed, Cursed!, I say! Somebody get Coy Barefoot on the history of that location - who remembers it as an Armand’s? Or the rumors of it becoming a spinoff of DC’s Sign of the Whale?

Or am I just the oldster around here?

Actually - The Hook was all over this last month:

“In addition, he [Anderson McClure] points out, big changes are coming to the restaurant this summer: at the end of July, Jaberwoke will close for several weeks for ’significant renovations.’”

Guess the “end of July” came a couple of weeks early.

I ate there twice. Once in 2004, and it was not so bad. Once again last year, and we walked out after our food hadn’t arrived after an hour and a half.

My understanding is that they are actually making some real sweet renovations to the place. And as far as the spot being cursed, I would actually say that each restaurant at that spot has always sold at a profit and each new place has done better than the previous one.

they are simply renovating and the booths are for sale outside of the place right now. they are going through a much needed overhaul of the place right now, though without better service or food (both are real bad) I would stick to going for 80s night even post-renovation.

Thanks for that info…I’ve heard UVA alumni talk about the different bars that have been in that location and they seem to speak fondly of them (The Greenskeeper was mentioned a lot).

Good luck to them. Goodness knows when they said their now defunct dress code was an attempted to make it a nicer place, I laughed a little. They needed a new decor more than they needed a dress code.

For what it’s worth, some of the guys I know love their pizza rolls.
