The C-Ville Weekly Makes Mountains Out of Molehills

Well, looks like we were named in C-Ville Weekly’s “Rapist Suspect Tried in the Media” article. Let’s examine the facts:

  1. We post “Rapist Caught!!!” and link to the WCAV and The Hook article, regarding the Rapist Suspect. We name no suspect and at the time no names had been released.
  2. Later that day, various news sources release the name of the suspect.
  3. We post “Innocent Until Proven Guilty” after finding that the name of the subject is released feeling surprised that every local media outlet happily named the suspect.

C-Ville Weekly’s account of these facts was:

Early reports ran the gamut. While the gossip website cvillain.com quoted stories from The Hook and WCAV under the headline “Rapist Caught!!,” the actual stories were framed a bit more judiciously…

While the more “judicious reponse” may have been to take advantage of the community’s infatuation with the WHO, we purposely don’t name names becaues that isn’t our style. We had no knowledge that the suspect would be named and that’s exactly the reason we gave warning to the community for overreacting to a “suspect.” Now, if that isn’t judicious, I don’t know what is. Hopefully our readers agree.

Or, maybe C-Ville Weekly is jealous of the Hook and the fact that they failed to break (potentially) one of Charlottesville’s biggest news stories. Read this for more background on the two papers.

Finally, I’d like to remind people that this site is open to commentary and open to posts. So, if you have another opinion you should make yourself heard.

Congrats on making the big time! Since C-Ville comes out on Tuesdays and has to go to press well before then, they had no chance at breaking any part of the arrest story. Sounds like sour grapes on their part.

    Lets compare article titles:
    Hook: “Serial Rapist Arrest?”
    Newsplex: “Charlottesville Rape Suspect Arrested”

Being that this is a gossip site and our nature is to over dramatize things for the fun and information of the community, is it a stretch to use exclamation marks? Lets revise the the above article titles a la cVillain:

    “Serial Rapist Arrest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
    “Charlottesville Rape Suspect Arrested!!!!!!”

Clearly cVillain makes things more fun and just points out the desperation the community has over the arrest of our city’s sexual deviants. I guess our articles would look more “judicious” if we refrained from the sophomoric use of exclamation points.

    “rapist caught”

    boring and unimaginative.

I though that entire C-ville piece was ill-informed and obnoxious. They got scooped so they made themselves into the town’s media critic. Please.
I usually have bones to pick with multiple aspects of local media coverage, but I actually think coverage of this issue has been fine, particularly on the print end.

The Hook is a bunch of smarmy, low rent manufacturers of news.

Shouldn’t it be “above” the print media to even mention a blog in their article? I mean, it’s a blog–about gossip. There are a number of Charlottesville blogs, so what made them point out this one? However, Cville probably did cvillain a favor since I suppose there may now be an influx in traffic here.
