Thomas Jefferson had a lot to say about free press. Paying homage to their founder in the pursuit of democratic Truth, or relishing the unadulterated pleasure of writing provocative features and unpopular opinions for a circulation of 10,000 mostly unresponsive readers, or perhaps even contributing an occasional article so as to partake of the proverbial padding of the resume, the writers of the Cavalier Daily are… really good! As a civilian reader, I want students find new stories and voices, and represent them responsibly.
These stories may be worth taking a look at, too.
A wish list for the University
The living wage made the list, as did the fact that the University of Virginia has no say over the salaries of its contracted employees. Given that this was the Christmas 2001 wishlist, the wish list slot could probably go to another cause this December.
Views on honor system evolve by fourth year
Please write as much as you want on your honor code. It’s a defining characteristic of the school. Alumni probably love seeing the debate alive and well. But be careful about what you write, because it will be Google-able for the ages. You may change your mind. (Or write something unoriginal.) Date? April 18, 2001. I’m sure this argument could be preceded by at least a century, too.
I think the “CD” is off to a good start. The past week has shown controversy, color, and a bit of comedy. Take a look:
Disagreeing over Adderall
Trevor Dobson writes a letter in response to an editorial asserting that using Adderall should constitute an honor offense because its effects give users an edge over their less-focused peers. Dobson’s question: what about caffeine? My question: hasn’t it gotten to the point of recreational use (it’s an amphetamine), so isn’t it a different offense altogether? Keep your eyes out for editorials.
I don’t want to be like Mike
Eric Strow is a great writer. Was he even alive for those Gatorade commercials? He clearly does his research!
The marching band refused to yield
Lauren Caldwell answers all of my questions about the band practices I was driving by these past few weeks in a light piece about this one time at band camp. Excerpt: “‘You could win points for a receipt for $9.08, a shaved head, a creative moustache and synchronized swimming in the hotel pool,’ Schmidt said. One adventurous female gained points for giving herself a mohawk. Another young man’s solo performance of music from ‘The Little Mermaid’ was a hit with onlookers.”

Lilith, I think your entries are often humorous and interesting, but you’ve been so U-centric lately…what’s up with that? No talk of the new boutique hotel going in downtown at the Boxer building that’s going to have a “private dining club”? I thought you’d be all over that!
Oh snap… ya Lilith get on it!
I was going for the “back to school special.” Too much? That’s a relief. Thor’s better at getting news, I prefer restaurant reviews and asking why we don’t have a Hooters. I haven’t written a review since the brunch piece, and I eat out constantly, so thanks for the reminder!
Oh yeah… I hadn’t heard any updates, so please share. Real Central VA’s blog is the most I’ve known about it.
