Aren’t Mondays the worst? You are completely refreshed (or still hungover) from a great weekend, but you have to sit there and reminisce about how you should have hooked up with that person, how you should have called back that friend or how you should have gone for a run. Well, you can reminisce over here… What happened this weekend?
First Friday: Art. Booze. Free. Lilith wrote a nice summary.
Shootings!: Don’t you love it when people get shot between the Downtown Mall and South Street? It makes you feel oh so comfortable about little old C-Ville. Of course, we knew about this first.
OXO: OXO has an increasingly popular night scene with some pretty bartenders and a nice layout. It’s still under the radar from the college kids, so if you get there quickly, you may enjoy a more townie-esque scene. OXO is new to this game, so I’m going to be mean and suggest things for improvement:
- Get a decent DJ. Hot Milk (or whatever his name is) needs keep the beat going. The sporadic (I assume request driven) music list created a sporadic dancing scene… or maybe everyone has really bad ADD.
- Hire a full-time bartender. We like the cute waitstaff serving drinks, but they are slow.
Kickball All-Star Tournament: It happened on Sunday. Does anyone have pictures?
Freakfest: We would love for someone to write a review! We will give you eternal praise and you will get brownie points.
VMAs: Did you catch Britney’s performance? Perez Hilton’s review is hilarious. It’s painfully funny:

UVA Game.. duh.
Got pictures and video from the kickball/funday extravaganza .. will post them up tonight.
Can I rant here? I’m very disappointed with the UVA Marching Band and their stomping all over the conclusion of SGGL’s set. These 40-somethings got their start here while students at UVA and rarely come back to town to perform. I know of literally dozens of people who came down from NOVA, spent money on the mall buying beer and dinner (some of it for me!), with the express purpose of listening to SGGL. The band wasn’t due to take over the pavilion until after 8, and they were making their way down well before 8. The guys in the band tried to play it off, but they gave up quickly, as did the dancers who almost got trampled right in front of the stage.
Mac McDonald could not have been less gracious (”Let’s here it for, um, the band!) as he shooed them off and tried to introduce the UVA band (”300 strong!” he said. Um, the DP reported it as 218 UVA students and 12 PVCC kids - not quite 300 there, Mac) and then the guys with Coach Groh.
The band, and the adults leading them, treated SGGL and the people at Fridays like UVA tries to treat the rest of Charlottesville. Shout them down and push them out of the way if they don’t get the hint.
I’m a fan of the football team, so I’m glad they won on Saturday, but I’m certainly not a fan of the way people got treated on Friday night, and don’t get me started on the $3.50 for a cup of tapwater on Saturday at the football game!

Thanks for the forum. Y’all rock.
Wow.. Stormy do you have a video of this or know anyone who has video? I remember hearing the band on the mall, but I didn’t realize they clashed with SGGL…That’s really lame.
What did we miss?
In addition to that downtown shooting, I was surprised to learn that the Belmont Market was robbed at gunpoint. Bastards.
here are some shots i got from the Kickball All Star Tournament

Tom,
Those are awesome. Any objection to me putting those on the flickr stream/facebook groups? What camera did you use? I really need a new one (as well as learning how to take a good photo).
what’s your email? (or just send me one - tom@tomdalyphotography.com)
I was at OXO both nights this weekend. I danced both evenings with a drink in my hand, no problems. Saturday night’s crowd was random but fun. On that note, I would have to disagree with your recommendations. OXO definitely should not change out the bar or the music. The last thing this town needs is another Blue Light. But, it wouldn’t hurt if some people learned a dance move or two. Certain sections of the dance floor displayed a prominent lack of rhythm.
Be fair Henry, dancing is about having a good time. There was some good dancers out there…one couple (girl black halter dress, guy in a jacket) that seemed to know what was up; he was spinning her all over the place! I just don’t want the idea to be that you have to be some dancing woah to go have a good time.
I really like the OXO music selection. I love electro-pop, lcd soundsystem, hot chip, etc… we need more of that in cville…
That’s lame to say that the bartenders are cute but should be replaced because they’re slow. I used to work in a bar and I can tell you why service their is slow:
a) no computer system yet– they have to write down and add up every friggin’ mojito you order
b) no bar back yet–they have to run around and restock their glasses and liquor instead of making more drinks.
c) they feature a cocktail list of some pretty complex beverages.
These things have nothing to do with the staff, wouldn’t you think?
[…] how to handle a late night bar scene. I heard too many complaints over the quality of your service. You’ve made excuses in the past. Maybe you will learn, but, for now, your God of Thunder is […]
