Ladies, do you think it’s weird when guys wear the same Jean brand as you? Do you care?
Guys, do you have designer jeans?Do you feel weird wearing them in Charlottesville because people might think you swing on the opposite side of the fence?Do you care?
My opinion is there is a stigma attached to guys wearing designer anything in this town.
We’re curious…. Let us know your thoughts… It’s a super important issue.

Of course I have an opinion about this. Guys, yes, I am subconsciously checking out your jeans. I can’t tell you which of my guy friends wear designer jeans, because I don’t actually look at their seams and labels. But I can tell you which of my guy friends have not updated their jeans in this century. Tapers. High waists. Stonewash. I know that quality men are often attached to one or two pairs of jeans for years on end, and I know that quality men are not going for prissy women who check to see that you paid more than $100 for your pants, and I know that quality men will never see the logic of purchasing jeans with pre-fab fades, dirt, and rips. But from Old Navy to Diesel, nearly every clothes store sells dark, boot cut jeans that show off your hot asses. This is not being “trendy” or “metro.” It’s about showing that you care, just a little bit, about taking care of yourself in a way that women “get.” Think of a woman you know with an amazing sense of humor or a great figure, but she kind of dresses like your grandmother. She’s hidden! Off the soapbox now.
do 501’s count as designer? I’m so lame…
d’oy
I bought a pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans recently and have received from women more comments on them in a month than in all my years of wearing Levi’s.
Who knew?
i got a couple of pairs of j-crew jeans on sale recently, is that designer? they are ok, but if i had spent $90 a pair instead of $30-40 i wouldn’t feel as good about the purchase. I can’t imagine spending more than $60 or so on jeans, and i’ve definitely never gone over $50.
Well, I was thinking designer encompassed brands such as Sevens, Diesel, Rock & Roll Republic, Energie, Lucky etc.
I wear designer jeans. It’s not like they are these ridiculous rhinestone studded things. As Lillith said, they are just better looking and more flattering (and I agree Stormy, you get many more compliments on them). I do wish more guys would jump on the train around here, but Charlottesville just doesn’t seem to have enough of a scene to support guys in designer jeans…too many preppy types. It’s a completely different story in Miami, NY, or LA.
Where are the women responses!?
I think good looking jeans on guys are great! They don’t even have to be designer. Where I’m from we had this place called Rue 21(jeans were $20), sold really great jeans for guys, not sure if ya’ll have one here. You shouldn’t be afraid to wear jeans that actually fit and accentuate your body, it’s attractive! You can throw on a ratty t-shirt and if you have on good looking jeans you’re still going to look hot, plus it seems like you put some thought into what you threw on. Also, it seems like men up here like to smell natural and don’t wear much cologne or even body wash, why is that? The natural thing is fine, but I think it’s kinda funny that men here aren’t that much into smelling good. I think it’s so attractive when guys smell good, it’s not just a girl thing!
Wife and daughters know my size and bring me home a new pair every year, which I wear about 5 times.
I could care less, but if they are happy then my life if soooo much simpler.
Like Tim, I also wear designer jeans. A long-time skeptic, I finally tried a few pairs on and was impressed by fit and quality – not to say you can’t find as good fit and quality elsewhere (read: cheaper), but it’s tough. Also, I figure anyone with enough knowledge to ID a pair of designer jeans probably has a pair of their own, and odds are if you don’t, you wouldn’t be able to tell a difference from non-designer.
Any place in town carry men’s jeans? I’ve seen a limited selection at beecroft & bull, and heard judy b. carries them, but I always end up going to Richmond…
I think there is a store on the mall.. Lilith.. what’s the name?
I recommend Judy B. for men and women. They KNOW designer jeans. And sometimes, they put their designer jeans on sale. I got my favorite pair of Sevens there several years ago. (They are now not-pre-fab ripped!) It’s located on Millmont behind Barracks. The store Thor knows I like is Industry. I haven’t gone shopping for jeans there, but I think the shopping experience is great.
Funny, I’ve been going back and forth about this for a few weeks, my goto jeans have been gap, but a friend (well my new girlfriend too) has a thing for designer jeans.. i may wonder over to Industry and have a look see. i don’t/wouldn’t feel any less manly dressed well…
I think most guys look good in designer jeans. So, I guess my answer to your question is yes.
ok time to throw my 2 cents in the mix….
I am from San Diego so I was around a lot of culture a lot of the time….I remember the first time I bought a “real” pair of designer jeans I was a bit of a skeptic until I went out that night. They we a pair of Lucky’s which I still have 5 years later…I must say out west women notice these things here in the ‘ville not so much….I own multiple pairs now of all different brands, washes, colors, and cuts and not once here in Charlottesville has a female commented or even hinted at the fact I am wearing a pair of Citizens, Sevens, Diesels, or Guess jeans….So I think men should wear what they are comfortable in because in the long run it’s not the jeans that are going to make you….
I can honestly say I have never, ever, not even once, noticed what brand of jeans a man was wearing. I may notice the ass in the jeans, and better jeans may enhance the ass, but I couldn’t tell you if it was a nice ass in Luckys, Sevens, Guess or Wranglers if you put a gun to my head. So guys — go forth and wear whatever jeans make your ass look good, I say.
hah – good answer divine
What about guys who tan or get manicures?
a bit over the line I think there Lilith
I appreciate a man who takes care of his hands. Scaly, hangnail-ridden, gnawed-on paws do not inspire a girl to swoon. I’m not skeeved by men who get actual manicures (the menfolk deserve a little pampering too), but — a nail clipper (deposit the leavings in the trash, please, not on the duvet or bathroom rug!), nail file and a decent pair of cuticle nippers go a long way.
Tanning? Meh… I don’t find tans particularly attractive, but I also probably wouldn’t know a guy was a tanning aficionado unless he glowed, like Ross in that one Friends episode.
Female opinion: I’ve never cared about designer jeans. I did use to live in a big city and do know that clubrats do notice that shit. Thank Goddess I don’t have to deal with that environment anymore.
I do notice individual style, however. Men who do anything besides wear the standard man-iforms usually get a compliment from me. The standard Cville man-iforms being:
1. khaki pants/collared buttondown/brown shoes
2. khaki shorts/Polo
3. cargo shorts/message tee/hemp necklace
4. extra long black or white tee/droopy shorts/sneakers
5. extra long polo/droopy shorts or jeans/gold chain
6. skinny jeans/western shirt
