Basil Mediterranean Bistro

To me, Mediterranean dining in Charlottesville meant tomato basil soup at Cafe Europa and marinated eggplant at Aroma’s. “Greek” or “Middle Eastern” don’t even come close to warranting their own categories in the Hook and C-VILLE’s restaurant listings. I just lived without falafel, really…

…until there was Basil.

I’ve been loyal to Basil and expect it to keep growing roots in its Corner location on 14th street. It’s a well-run local business: they host a website, they hire helpful servers, they deliver, they cater, they display great art, they welcome students and families alike, they offer an extensive menu, and they have one of the most impressive beer lists on the Corner with more than 60 international bottles to choose from.

Perfect lunch on the weekend: falafel pita and a Delirium Tremens. Basil, don’t change a thing.

[That picture is not their gyro, for the record. See for yourself!]

I ate there Friday… learned from the owner that their tiramisu is shipped from Italy! I inhaled (half) the gyro and was told I had tzatziki somewhere near my ear. Hott… finished the rest on Saturday morning…

I will try Bashir’s, thanks! And to be fair, Orzo has more than Italian too. dijonbray, thanks for bringing up the fries. For the record, they’re salt-and-peppered, the way Chili’s and the Virginian do them but better.
