The Clean House at Live Arts Theater

Someone asked for a review of The Clean House. I saw it, so I guess I’ll write one. This is my first post!

I thought it was totally awesome! I didn’t know anything about the play going in (a friend invited me). I kinda thought it would be a drama, but it turned out to be a comedy. The actors were all really great.

You can tell I’m not experienced at writing reviews!

The Clean House is about the household of Matilde, a Brasilian live-in housekeeper who hates to clean. “If the floor is jirty, I look at the ceiling. It’s always clean!” Her boss is a stiff, UVA-doctor-type who doesn’t really know how to relate to people in a non-professional way. Matilde’s only friend is her boss’s sister, an OCD-riddled housewife who chose a life of leisure in suburbia. That choice has made her as neurotic as Stevie Jay before a one-man show.

Some of the play is in Portuguese and Spanish, but I don’t feel like I missed anything. I guess what Dr. Phil says about communication being 80% non-verbal is true.

The actress who plays Matilde was physically engaging. I found myself watching her during group scenes. She uses her body to make the audience laugh. But the prize goes to the lady who played the sister. Holy cow was she funny. She has the funniest face I’ve ever seen onstage at Live Arts. She has these big eyes and expressive face and really knows how to use them.

I recommend it!

You seriously crack me up! Nah, skip the drama on this one, leave it to the actors.
