Our Future Neighbor Spills the Beans

Diane Sawyer recently interviewed Jenna Bush. The full interview is watchable at 10PM on Friday (when you shouldn’t be watching TV). Highlights include:

“I didn’t go to Latin America thinking, ‘I’m gonna write a book. This is what I’m gonna do.’ I went there to work for UNICEF and to learn. But as my job for UNICEF was to document the lives of kids living in exclusion, I wanted to make them more than statistics. So I would take the statistic and write their historias de vitas ” the stories of their lives ” and then I met Ana. Through all the kids, I thought, ‘This could be more, there should be something more,’” Bush said.

“You know there’ve been people [actor] Matt Damon among them” who have said, ‘Should the Bush daughters be fighting in Iraq?’” Sawyer said….Obviously I understand that question and see what, what the point of that question is, for sure,” Bush said. “I think there are many ways to serve your country. And I think … what’s most appropriate for me to do is to teach or to work in UNICEF and represent our country in Latin America. But you know I don’t think it’s a practical question. I think if people really thought about it, they know that we would put many people in danger. But I understand the point of it. I hope that I serve by being a teacher.”

So there you have it. Our future neighbor got hired to be the National Geographic reporter (sans pictures) for UNICEF and thinks that it’s appropriate for her to serve the country by writing about poor citizens of other countries.

My interpretation of the quote below is that she might not completely fall in line with her father when it comes to the war. The tone with which she says this will probably help in figuring out if I’m mistaken.

When asked whether she agrees with her father about the Iraq War, Bush said, “You know I’m not here to talk about that, but I’m also not a policymaker. It’s a really complicated, obviously a very complicated subject. Everybody can agree on that.”
I can’t fault her for working with a non-profit and raising awareness about the plight of women and children in Latin America. In fact, I think it’s great that she’s following in her mother’s footsteps by working with children and becoming a teacher as opposed to “serving” as her father does.

Upstart, I agree with your analysis. There isn’t anything wrong with being a teach, I just thought it was a little bit of an ironic answer, although it was a keen way to avoid the topic.

She answered smartly because of the whole Prince Harry thing (where they wouldn’t send him to Iraq qith his unit as it would pose significant danager to his fellow soldiers as he would be a pretty impactful terrorist target). I think the real question should be “do you personally know anyone serving in Iraq, from college or high school?” My suspicion is that she doesn’t and I think that is more telling than her or her sister signing up.

I think she meant that she received adequate spin training on the evolution, and the trip in itself was designed to deflect from the obvious criticism. Book will generate $$ that will continue to inflate her status of being, but may not impact the very girl being written about or the country of record. There are however, a lot of organizations like UNICEF serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and Africa. Don’t have to be in a uniform to go. We have paid Blackwater substantial monies it appears to provide adequate force protection.
