Weekend Gallivanting

Here’s what’s on the cVillain list for this beautiful fall weekend:

Ward Churchill, the guy who got famous for saying bad things about 9/11 victims and who wrote “as for those in the World Trade Center… Well, really, let’s get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break” will speak at 9PM at Vinegar Hill. We are definitely attending to see all the heckling that will undoubtedly take place.

Ever since X-Lounge did it, everyone thinks it’s cool to have a DJ. Look for DJs at Zinc, OXO, Mono Loco and X-Lounge. Too much dancing. HEY BARS… Let’s combine forces and rotate every weekend. I don’t think there are enough dancers in C-Ville and you are going to ruin our fun by fragmenting the danceophiles.

Go to X-Lounge and support our first advertiser!

Russian carni kids are coming to the Paramount on Saturday at 7PM. Yes it’s expensive, but it’s really cool. [CK]

Recently, Lagrape reviewed Clean House. It continues this weekend at Live Arts.

For all those who think that Virginia has enough talent, Teen Idol is coming to the Music Resource Center on Saturday. [TI]

Who can say no to robotic car lovin’? Go watch the urban robotic car team pimp their ride at Star Hill Brewery on Saturday from Noon until 2PM. Good luck guys. Maybe you can drive it to South Street and.. nevermind. [Team Jeff]

Courtesy of Oy (thanks we love you)… starting at noon on Saturday, La Taza has a benefit concert for sustainable farming in Guatemala. $5 dollars gets you specials and the Acoustic Groove Trio, Darrell Rose, Dreaming Isabelle, Kings of Belmont, Monticello Roa and Trees on Fire.

What did we miss? Don’t forget to pick your favorite public space for our clandestine meetup… TBA!

P.S. Apples, Apple Butter, Apple Pie, Apple Hay Rides, etc are so obvious I don’t need to mention them.

ta taza is going to be awesome– they’ve worked really hard to advertise and help support the FIRST ever solar powered coffee shop in guatemala

If they worked so hard, why didn’t they send us an email?

They knew I had it covered, of course… (got the flyer with my morning coffee)

Ummm… hold up. No offense or anything, but I have been playing a weekly dj night dance party at escafé since before X-Lounge even opened. Im not saying the X bit the idea or anything (clearly not, since the built a dj booth into the remodel), and I’m not dogging - I’ve checked out X’s scene and enjoyed it throughly. But dig… We (escafé) don’t advertise hardly at all, our crowd has been developed by word of mouth, and when its ‘on’ its really, really fun. Im not sure, but I think escafé is the only bar in town where one actually can, and people frequently do, dance *on* the bar and tables. Man, when its crackin’ at the cafeteria, it is a *mad* house. Ive had twenty people on the bar, every table grinding and the floor knockin at my best moments. Its every Wednesday night and every other Friday night (tonight!) starting at eleven pm. OK, enough with the shameless self plug. Where was I… ah yes.

Another thing to consider… most of the dj’s that are playing out and about are all playing different types of music. So rather than looking at it as one person trying to choose between several identical hamburgers, why not look at it as some sort of lovely buffet, with many tasty treats all within walking distance (trying to work the food theme in here). I cant speak for anyone else, but I know I try to go sample all the other cats in town to see what they are doing , one because I just love dj shit, and two, to make sure Im not overlapping too much. I know my choons aren’t to everyone’s liking, just as oxo’s flavor of “guy with laptop and stack of ‘best of’ records loaded into iTunes” isn’t my thing, but hey people dig what they dig and its always good to have options. Anyway, just my two cents.

One last thing… x-lounge, oxo and anybody else advertising dance nights at their joints… put your dj’s name *in* your ad or flyer. You wouldn’t just put “a band will play” in there, would you? I like getting to know which dj’s are playing where and what they do. Its like labeling the dishes on the buffet. Sure a lot of people don’t care, but a lot do, and you lose nothing by doing so. Besides, your dj is working hard to create a quality experience, and its cool to give him some props in print. Just a thought.

Alright. Im off my soapbox. Thanks for listening, and remember to support your local dj.

Belmont - Well of course there is 2:16 which probably did it before you as well, but ok, ok you were first. We’ll check it out.

How is the scene for straight guys?

Im not claiming to be the first, not even close… but as far as the current “dj in a bar/restaurant” trend is concerned, all Im saying is that we were ahead of the curve a bit. Since I am behind the curve in so many other aspects of my life, I thought Id just toss that out there. Or as someone once said “i just want to feel important”. Hee hee…

As to your other question, I will say this. One thing I learned growing up in San Francisco is that gay men have many, many beautiful straight women friends. So many het guys get all wound up in the “OMG that dude just looked at me, and now I am feeling the urge to sing show tunes and gah! I might catch teh gay!” flavor of passive homophobia that they fail to do the math and realize that the guy to girl ratio is *effectively* stacked *heavily* in their favor. But don’t let that secret out - one needs the abacrombie rugby shirt nermals with their prehensile brow ridges to continue to be freaked right the fuck out so that enlightenment and self security can continue to be sexy in a rarified kinda way. NawhaImsayin? Anyway.

That said, some nights are gayer than others. Its a roll of the dice.

Oh and by the way… Im not trying to start any kind of sociopolitical flame war in what would otherwise be a jaunty post about things to do this weekend. To each his own, I say. Im new here… perhaps I should tread a little lighter with the rhetoric. Cripes.

not at all.. we love 2:16 here. the point is for everyone to have fun. I was asking to help our straight readers make a better decision about escafe ;)

I am pro “as much dancing as possible,” and yes, I have danced on elevated surfaces at Escafe. :) You do good work…

I’m a straight dude who goes to Escafe(aka ASScafe) very frequently, and I love the shit out of it. If you’re a straight dude who can handle getting occasionaly eye-fucked or ass-brushed by a gay man, than it’s totally worth it, cuz Belmont is right on about the honeys; I’ve definately taken a couple home.

My poker buddy, P. Kritzer, is DJing tonight at Oxo, so I’m definately gonna check it out and see if friday is the new saturday. I’ll be there late though, working at L’etoile…

    Oh yeah, for the meet-up:

I’d definately like to fuck with the gentry, so I’m down with the proposed South Street, but my vote would be Blue Light.

Although if we all go to the Carribou show, it’d be easier to keep all the posters here anonymous, but I kind of don’t give a shit about that(If I were lillith or thor, I would).

We could have a meet up but give our real names instead of our aliases. Then we can keep our anonymity on here. Although, I, apparently have blown that already.
    P.S.
    Lilith rules,
    Thor drools.

Organizing the local dance scene so that y’all can travel as a herd from destination to destination is a pretty lame idea. Aint nothin wrong with good old fashioned competition.

    Wait, why do I drool!?

  18. 06 Oct 2007 at 9:39 amlilith said:

Thor’s a great dancer! Elevated surface dancing requires a special kind of exhibitionism/confidence/apathy, though, all of which can be natural or alcohol-induced. I woke up from a dream about dancing, in fact. I also dreamt about the crush du jour, and even in my own #@&*$ dream we didn’t work out. (It was a wine night.)

about the honeys; I’ve definately taken a couple home. Jon, if you want to make a patently absurd claim, do it under a better pseudonym because people who know you know that you’ve never taken any honeys home from anywhere.

hmmm… is this ray? I have taken two home. if you know who i am, than call me and i can tell you them their names and where you can find them.

Amen! On top of that, I’d happily spend the evening at a place I’ve never particularly liked if the “right” DJ were playing there. I think good people tend to show up when certain DJs play, which can change the vibe pretty dramatically.

Meow hiss! But seriously, bray, thanks for a great time, maybe… hiss meow!

I agree about the dj credits. I’ve followed djs before and would seriously show my face at a PTA meeting or Chili’s if Frank were spinning.

I’ll get down with the DJ comments. I went to the Bistro dance party for a bit on saturday solely cuz Steve Richmond was spinning; that mother fucker is number one in my books in terms of cville dj’s, although NO ONE was there for the jam(fall break Bistro! C’mon!).

Lillith: Thanks for a great time? I’m not aware of our chilling… OXO?

I’d love to see if we could put a directory of sorts together for local DJs. There are definitely plenty that I don’t know and it’d be interesting to list them out with a short description about the genre of music from which they usually draw.

No, I was not one of the “honeys,” just joking. The whole “honeys” thing kind of makes me cringe! It’s like taking home some “playas.”

Ohhhhhh! Well perhaps my prose is a little on the womanizer side, I’ll make an effort to be a little more gentlemanly in my future comments.

    BUT — Check it out:

I was just walking around the mall a few minutes ago and the C-ville was happened to be walking around the mall, too, asking their “Question of the Week”. This week’s question:

What makes for a good DJ?

I’m not surprised about the coincidence, because honestly, there aren’t that many questions you can ask people. I try to think of original questions all the time, and it’s like, “What’s your favorite color? I mean, boxers or briefs? Egad!”
