Spry’s (-25)
I finally made it to Spry’s after Ethan’s review a while back. My verdict? Between the excessively long wait and the cold plate of food (-10), I am thoroughly disappointed. The servers certainly treat you with southern charm (+10), but do they have a quadriplegic cooking (-10) food in the back? It’s BBQ and fried food. By our count, it took almost 30 minutes (-5) to receive the pulled pork and the basics. On top of that, Jinx’s, Belmont BBQ and Blue Ridge Pig offer much better pork. I was really unimpressed.
The Point (+15)
We had a little advertising spam a while back and we decided to checkout The Point (Omni’s sister restaurant) last week for breakfast. Despite the fact the Omni architecture draws up memories of some post 1980s chicugliness hangover (-5), we explored the buffet which set us back $13 + tax and included coffee, OJ and all you can eat (+5). The Point buffet offers natural, non-hormone meats as well as other organic items (+5). We enjoyed standard breakfast omelet and some biscuits and gravy that warrant a return (+5). The Point’s attention to service (+5) was impressive for Charlottesville. Check it out.
Enoteca (+15)
I feel like Enoteca chooses wines that challenge the english tongue, and as a result make me feel less sexy when I botch the name in front of my most recent hot lady friend (-5). Despite this, Enoteca shares a casually chic atmosphere that (dare I say) attracts attractive singles, mostly of the feminine origin (+10). While it may be difficult to maneuver close enough to the group of ladies or guys, one can enjoy Enoteca’s interior design and enjoy a enjoyable, gossip friendly, non-UVA infested, place to meet and hang with friends (+15). Despite the pricey glasses of wine (-5), we think Enoteca should be enjoyed by those who at least think they are a little classier than most.

thanks for the warning on Spry’s. I was thinking of going of there but now I never will.
You’re really docking points because Enoteca carry unfamilar Itlantian wines? That’s a plus 20 for me. (Plus 30 is the staff actually knows the list well enough to direct you to something awesome.) That being said, their mark up is a bit extreme.
Wow - I obviously meant Italian there…
I’ve been to Spry’s since then and got my food in only 10 minutes. I have been to Jinx’s now, and although the kitschy atmosphere is kinda neat, his sauce isn’t very good and I overall thought the food kind of sucked. Spry’s is still the best barbecue in town and it got a lot of other good reviews in my post.
Lys - docking points because I can’t pronounce them and I’m embarrassed. Don’t worry we use very standard and fair ranking systems on this site.
Okay Thor, you get +5 for honesty, and maybe an imaginary coupon for Italian lessons. I can only imagie what damage you’d do at a French-inspired wine bar ; )
I haven’t eaten there, so can’t speak to food quality/taste, but I would give them a second chance if the major mistake was speed. They’re a relatively new joint, so they’re probably still getting their bearings. Service should improve as employees get more experience.
My $.02.
cold food and not so good pork were also significant problems
I ate at Spry’s a couple of weeks ago and my food took forty minutes(FUCK THAT!). The food tasted pretty good and the waiter gave me a Jomo on the house. Best bbq sandwich I’ve had in the area is at Three Notch’d Grill in Crozet, and Uncle Charlie’s beef brisket is off the chain as well.
i thought spry’s was supposed to have a lunch buffet. any knowledge on this?
Yes, it’s $6.97, but I’m not sure what it includes.
[…] offer it anymore, but if they still do, try their biscuits and gravy at the buffet. Thor wrote about his experience there awhile ago, and after trying the gravy myself (which has a nice selection […]
