Things to Talk About:
From New York Times and Paulson to Charlottesville Real Estate, it’s a good idea to educate yourself about mortgage woes and housing issues. We’ve heard a lot of whispers about real estate starting to harm residents, even in the gem of Charlottesville.
Um, local politics!? I’m not sure anyone really cares about the rat race, but if you do, The Hook has a great writeup on all the candidates.
Charlottesville School Decree: Bullying is officially over… riiiiiiiiiiiight.
Rumored restaurant closings: Big Jim’s & Atomic Burrito. Fans have created a “Save Atomic” group on Face Book.
Virginia Film Festival. Do you love Turturro?
Things to Do:
Hook described “Floyd style” Crozet Music Festival. It’s gonna be a nice day and this thing is being marketed incessantly. Will you go for $25? The band lineup excites some and bores others. Us… we’d rather grab a bottle of Pinot and go hiking.
How long shall it take somebody before they decide to go to the Mute Math show at Satellite on Saturday night? If you aren’t into Mute Math, you can watch Wilco at the Pav for 38 bucks. Is it worth that much money to see a Jam Band (…kidding)?
Suck nitrous balloons on the downtown mall?
You can shoot guns at each other… paintball guns, with CSSC.
There are some other concerts too… check our calendar to see more stuff! You can always submit events…Nothing special on the bar scene this weekend.
Finally, a shameless advertising plug. We are working on a site redesign and in order to pay for it we need more advertsiers. So, tell your friends and send us a note if you want to advertise!

What’d we miss?!
Ummm….maybe that Wilco isn’t a jam band?
Also possibly of some note: a couple of local DJs are giving a go at starting a “Dance-Rock, Electronica, and Alternative Dance Music” night at R2, starting tonight. Yes yes yes I know, not the most reputable of establishments, but if you’ve ever been you know that structurally it’s a swell joint with a good sound system. More on that here:

Wilco is a “jam band” refers to the comments in this post:

Oh…I recall that one. I cringed and let it pass. But since I’m already logged in, I decided to comment this time.
All 7th century mandolin and 5th century harp dance remixes at escafé. 11-2am, with ever foppish dj adolph von strausberger on the wheels of wood. Come and shake thine tailfeathers aloft, forsooth.

Talented + smokin-hot = Mutemath
Bright : the sun
Lame : Lilith
And Thor, I like the emphatic bolding.
Thor, thanks for the LOL moment of the day. When I was reading and saw “Is it worth that much money to see a Jam Band ” I spit my mouthful of a lovely Sauvignon Blanc on my monitor.
I’ll be at Wilco with all the other wooks. (that’s a jam band joke…albeit not very funny, but still…..)
There will be very few people at Wilco resembling those you might find on http://www.w00ks.org or http://www.passedoutwookie.com . On the contrary, Wilco is in danger of having too much overlap with John Mayer lovers. However, they have managed to gain the respect of a lot of jam band fans–just check out phantasytour or Relix magazine some time. I think Lilith was probably referring to the “cooler than thou” attitude of some Wilco fans that some resembles that of phish heads or spreadnecks. But you can find that with a number of non-jamband bands— see: Silver Jews, Ween, and (even) the Arcade Fire.
Crud buster, I don’t know what Wilco shows you’ve seen, but there is arguably no overlap with John Mayer’s fan base. I’m not putting a value judgment on John Mayer by saying this (personally, I think he’s using his undeniable talent for evil bubblegum pop), but the crowds are very, very different. Just becuase they sold a large chunk of ‘Sky Blue Sky’ to Volkswagen, while dubious, doesn’t quite put them in the same league.
I don’t care if you go to Wilco or not. But if you want to hear one of the best lyricists out there (Tweedy) and some truly virtuosic guitar playing (Nels Cline), the $38 will be well worth it.
Oh yeah…wilcoworld.net just posted that the Heartless Bastards are opening. If you’re in the mood to hear a rockin’ indie/blues trio with a great female vocalist, at least stand on the bridge to catch some of it.
re: atomic - i stopped in there tonight and was told that they’ve been bought out (by whom, they aren’t allowed to say, but i have my suspicions), will not be relocating, and will emphatically be definitely closing on november 1. the building across the street is being turned into a hotel, and the owners of said hotel didn’t want all of the noise that atomic attracts when they have bands play.
so i guess we atomic fans will have to stock up on burritos in the next two weeks. if i buy a lot of them and freeze them, will they still be good in six months?
i’m bummed. i’ll miss that little hole in the wall.
Bus Rider: I love Wilco, and have seen them a few times. I don’t make the Mayer comment happily, but make no mistake it has nothing to do with the band. I do happen to know a decent portion of people who are going Saturday would also go see people like Mayer. Wilco is sort of “the cool band to see” for 30 somethings these days—you’ll see a lot of hipsters and downtown types there but also a good amount of the Farmington crowd. And this goes back to the success of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, not Sky Blue Sky.
Agree completely re: Nels. And regardless of the composition of the fan base, the main point is and should be that Wilco is one of the best live bands out there right now–if not the best—and is a rare band that puts out solid albums with strong lyrics, AND has a kick ass live show.
Re: Wilco: Have a little respect — there’s real talent there. You missed a good source this week, Wilco cover story in c-ville weekly.
And for the election minded (and we all should be) here in Albemarle County, c-ville weekly has been running profiles and coverage of candidates for the past few weeks. Good collected resource on coverage right here. And don’t forget to vote.
belmont yo, you should totally ditch that lame-o mandolin stuff and give this a go:

I know, right? Besides… beat matching with wax cylinders is a real bastard. And don’t get me started on having to hand crank the damn phonographs every five minutes…
Then again, schlepping vinyl… oof. Thats why we like these space age contraptions:

(taken from last weeks last wednesdays “Digital Patio and General Gadabout Festivities” at escafe, with Reginald Whittingspoon III on the mando)
B yo, you’re a real dandy. How very foppish of you indeed. I surrender! See you at Crozet Music Festival…
Goddamn it, I can’t believe Atomic is getting bought out because a fucking hotel is going up on the mall. It was one of the coolest little venues in town that attracted bands of all genres (I’ve seen everything from bluegrass to punk) and people from all walks of life. They’ll probably transform the space into some dumb cookie cutter trendy bar like Blue Light.

yeah, ethan, i dont know where you get your info, but, at leas ton this, its wrong. atomic didnt get bought out. they have been steadily losing money for about a year now. closing has been in the talks for quite a while. and i got all this form the horses mouth.
it is kind of a bummer, though. i usually had fun at atomic. some of the bartenders suck though. thank god that douche shane doesnt work there anymore. he was the worst. i like that mustachioes fella, though, whats his name, al? i’ll follow him to wherever he goes.
Staying out of this one. But you have fun.
To go back, yes, crudbuster, was definitely referring to the cooler than thou. I’m an Arcade Fire cooler than thou, personally.
I got my info from post #12 in this thread, so blame him.
I went to Wilco on Saturday night and it was indeed filled with 30/late 20-something hipster couples (some with babies) casually dressed in tasteful flannel and expensive jeans, having little picnics of organic, local food before enjoying the show with a toke and a cuddle. I have to say I kinda liked it, and thought, “This is sooo Charlottesville, and I’m glad I live here” though I did leave early. Too much plodding slow stuff.
ethan - #12 here. don’t blame me, blame whoever was working the bar last thursday who, and i quote, said they were “bought out”. perhaps he’s the one who’s misinformed? *shrug* either way, it sucks.
also, i’m a lady, thankyaverymuch.
