From her dialect, it sounds like that cooking show airs in Wisconsin. I hope that doesn’t become the recipe du jour here in Cville. Amherst maybe…

Horatio: Word. She isn’t from the south. As you said, Wisconsin or maybe Minnesota. I think Thor is playin’ with us.

I wouldn’t doubt some people in Virginia do this (I’m lookin’ at you Buckingham County, amongst others), but not in Charlottesville. Those of you new here or moving here, no this is not the norm. At all.

One word. Grundy. That’s why Atomic is closing….the dearth of the squirrel burrito and is rumored to be the secret behind Big Jim’s success. Anything to keep more people moving here is fine by me. No offense. It’s a horrid horrid little town full of malcontents and pseudo intellectuals and lot’s and lot’s of road kill restaurants.

Also, I had the best chitlin and possum wrapped dates at Mas tonight. They have PBR on tap. Which of these things isn’t true.

Now, having said that this clip is from Wisconsin (perhaps Minnesota), squirrel meat is one of the key ingredients in true Brunswick stew, a Southwest Virginia creation. But again, Charlottesville is CENTRAL VA, so you don’t find squirrel meat too often (unless brunswick stew is on the menu).

Yummm, that looks tasty! Squirrel meat is actually pretty good, but you have to kill a lot of squirrels to make something of substance, e. g. stew.

I don’t think she’s from Charlottesville, either because she’s actually COOKING IN HER HOUSE (rather than eating at a restaurant) and she might even be a SINGLE PARENT (no dad in evidence.) For you rich white folks moving down here from the northeast, you needn’t worry that your rich, white, married neighbors are eating squirrel. (And trust me, it helps to be married in C’ville because then you can afford the ridiculous real estate prices.)

If more of us in Charlottesville ate squirrel, maybe we’d be a whole lot less elitist? It’s a pipe dream to be sure…

If you google “Heidi Wilson Huntress” you’ll see that she’s from Michigan, so sadly an invitation to come over and sample some of her squirrel melt is probably not in the offing. I have had some tasty Brunswick stew that I’m certain included squirrel, and I’m sure I’m not the only one (think of a mix between dark-meat turkey, and duck). Two problems I have with this video are: we never see her pick the meat off the bones of the fetus-like boiled squirrel. This is most likely the point where she throws up all over herself and the taping has to be delayed while her clothes are laundered and she drinks heavily; also we never see little Johnny actually eat her concoction. We hear how tasty its going to be, but thats a bit presumptuous isnt it?
Anyone wishing to try this at home should know that Thursday on Craigslist right here in Cvillain territory, someone in the ‘farm and garden’ category had “meat rabbits” listed ($20 seems a bit pricey though)
