Mel’s Meta Burger definitely deserves a mention.

I’ve eaten burgers at a lot of places in town, and none of them really stands out. Well, College Inn stands out as being the worst.

Rapture has a really good burger, and Michael’s Bistro’s bison burger is delicious. South Street has a pretty good burger as well.

The best are Riverside and Five Guys, but I think I’ve mentioned that before…

    (never had a gus burger)

Riverside in a landslide. Mel’s (Meta or normal) a close second, 5 Guys nowhere in sight (but their fries are tops).

don’t understand the “local purists” who preach Riverside rules and 5 Guys drools. I’ve been eating both for a decade - they’re practically the same. Riverside comes out a little greasier, that’s it…

“Ooh, they’re an chain” so they must be bad.

True story: Riverside has a delicious veggie burger. (Ha! Take that, meatwads!)

I think that pretty much sums a lot of it up, yeah.

Putting on the snob hat here for a minute, but personally, as I try not to eat more than a hamburger or two a month, and none of the local offerings are nearly as good as can grilled up at home with a little bit of effort and some high quality beef, I virtually never order a burger out.
Also, not to sound like a deluded buyer who thinks meat from the Organic Butcher or Whole Foods is neccesarily cleaner or more humanely raised than that served at Riverside, but ummm….isn’t it?
I know organic standards are a mishmash of sometimes meaningless regulation and Whole Foods is a triumph of marketing above all else, but I don’t know. When I buy organic ground beef I feel like there’s a good chance that there is less fecal matter in my meat.

    mmmm… fecal burgers.

Not “no” fecal matter, “less” fecal matter. Its like the allowable 7% “unknown” ingredients in hot dogs. To each his own to be sure, but, well… wow. Enjoy, I guess.

/why do people keep eating my brother the vegetable?

Five Guys gets the edge for customization and the fries.

Riverside is good, but overrated just because it’s local.

Gusburgers are also excellent, although I wish someone like Five Guys would make a higher quality version.

this might be blasphemous, but red robin does a good egg-burger in my opinion.

My vote is Riverside. I used to eat at Big Jim’s a lot and liked theirs too, but haven’t been there in a while.

Blue Moon has a burger with cream cheese and caramlized onions that’s preettty tastey; and if you’re willing to shell out the extra couple of bucks for their imported “artisan bacon” than I’d say it’s pretty damn hard to beat any of their burgers.

Stanley: I also noticed yesterday that Mel’s has put their veggie burger back on the menu, you should check it out and let all the other herbavores know. Perhaps best veggie burger should be another post altogether.

Riverside/Martin’s, hands down. Riverside if I’m in town, Martin’s if I’m North. Five Guys is worth its weight though, because eaten very slowly, its one of the best hangover cures to date.

Thanks for the Blue Moon tip. I’ve had their cheeseburger and would’ve ordered that if I’d seen it. New item?

And I completely agree with Tim on all accounts.

dijon: noted with appreciation re: Mel’s veggie burger.

As for Martin’s/Riverside, I work near the airport, and I can’t keep straight which one my co-workers deem the evil one from one week to the next, so I frequent each one roughly equally and then tell no one. (Um, except you fake people on the internet.)

anyone ever been to ottos out on 250 w between crozet and afton? excellent. might not be worth the drive from downtown, but if you are in the area, its worth stopping by.

in town, the bob burger at mcgradys is yummy.

Horse and Hound has the best burgers, and its a toss-up between ‘the Secretariat’ and the ‘Old Yeller’.
All right, I made that up. For speed, convenience, taste and cost I gotta say 5 guys. But Rapture used to have the best fries. Anyone else remember their sweet-potato fries back when they opened. I think they did away with them when too many people came in and just ordered plates of fries.

i totally disagree with the H&H .. no way, nothing special there other than a few toppings.

Thor? Did you not read the part about me making it up? Who would name a burger the ‘Old Yeller’?!? warning on the menu: “ordering the ‘old yeller’ may result in hearing a loud bang from behind the restaurant, followed by an extended wait, and finally your dish served by a young boy weeping”. Perhaps you didn’t read my other comment where I said: “Horse and Hound needs to go under…..I have yet to go in there and find either horse or hound on the menu…fucking false advertising…”

For me it’s 5 Guys. Granted, it’s nice that they’re right across the street from me, AND that I can call ahead so I don’t have to wait, but what really does it, is that fact that it’s a simple, straight up BURGER (TMI - lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, and jalapeno). I’m sure a lot of the other places have really cool, delicious gourmet burgers, but that’s just not for me. When I want a hamburger, I want simply cooked, fresh red meat. And I want some cheese, some grease, and some ketchup. When I want something more, I’ll probably get a steak instead (a whole different discussion, but my fave steak in town is Zocalo).

    Horse & Hound? Rapture?

To each his own, I suppose.

Riverside, 5 Guys, & Big Jim’s are fine choices, but the best burger in town is quietly being served at Rhett’s.
