Christian’s on the Corner: A godsend, but needs improvement

Yet again, I ended a drunk night night whereever by making my way over to Christian’s on the corner for some yummy melted cheese. As usual it was packed, but the line moved quickly. Unfortunately, also as usual, the pizza was completely sub-par (especially for Christians). What’s the deal with this? I completely understand that they have to serve a lot of people in one night and we are all too drunk to care about the quality of the pizza, but come on - they can improve a bit. Mine was a bit cold. The attitude of the cashier left something to be desired. And damn if that pizza isn’t expensive! 3.50 for two toppings?

A few questions:

  1. Why do we all still go there if the pizza isn’t great?
  2. All three late night corner places (christians, little johns, and the white spot) are jam packed - isn’t there a market for more places?
  3. Why did it take so long to get a pizza place on the corner?
  4. Can I get an amen?

    amen, brother!

we go there, and we will continue to go there, because we’re drunk. but the difference between a lunch slice on the downtown mall and a late night slice on the corner is pretty remarkable. it is pretty strange, though, that there are so few late night places on the corner and most new ones don’t work out…remember when the first floor of o’neills turned into a sandwich shop to compete w/ littlejohns?

    4. Amen!

    3. I think there used to be one. I seem to remember a slice joint up from orbit when I first moved here and I hadn’t yet realized that I could just, you know, not go to the corner at all.

    2. Yes. The corner is a limitless wormhole of funds from the checking accounts of parents into the accounts of food and alcohol providers. Limitless.

    1. I stopped. It was gradual, but I think Im finally done. Everytime I went to the downtown spot, my pizza was burned, the service not just apathetic but down right rude. I have no idea what went wrong, I used to love it, but for the last six months, everytime I went there I came out late and angry. That butterhog thay have working the reg down there… well let’s just say she’s not a people person.

Im not nearly the critic that some of you on here are, it takes a lot not to let me give a joint a seventh chance, but damn if im not done with that place and all of its manifestations. Pity, really.

Yeah, there was that Bambino’s place next to Cafe Europa or Lee’s Cuisine or somewhere in there. I really liked it because it was excessively cheap and slices were big.

I’ve never really had a problem with the new Christian’s, although my standards are really low considering my favorite pizza is still a little spot on 8th and 37th where slices are a whole dollar. I wonder if that place is still there. Someone should investigate.

Uh. You’re not from these parts, are you? :) Sylvia’s was on the corner for ~half a decade. There was long, long a rotating cast of pizza places on 14th — Gumby’s for many years. There’s that chain that opened ~five years ago, the Mellow Mushroom. But, even ignoring those pizza places, there’s the College Inn, which has been there for as long as I can remember.

It would be enormously surprising to me if there was any point in the past thirty years during which there was not at least one pizza joint on the corner.

thaqor, you’d be equally disappointed in the pantop’s iteration.

granted, pizza on pantops was my mistake to begin with. maybe we started falling down the rabbit hole when they began accepting cards?

Waldo Jaquith - I mistyped - what I meant to ask was “why did it take so long to get a late night pizza place on the corner.” I lived through the Gumby’s and Sylvia’s era and have been to the Mushroom. None of these places are/were open late night.

The college inn, however, is a very good point - I don’t eat there nearly enough.

Nobody’s mentioned Frank’s, which I think closed something like three or four years ago. It was late night - usually ’til three - and the pizza was pretty interesting compared to everything else. Some of the good pizza varieties were baked ziti, chicken marsala, and taco. They also had really good panini caprese. I miss that place.

What we desperately need is a good late-night cheap food option downtown. If Christian’s stayed open past 2 on the mall I guarantee people wouldn’t be complaining about the fact that the quality has dropped off or the service sucks… I remember Gumby’s…mmm.. you could walk outta there with a giant pizza for like 6 bucks (I think it was the ‘Gumby dammit’, or maybe the ‘Pokey’?), and before that ‘Chanello’s’ Where are the discount pizza joints these days? This is a college town.
I’d love to see a ‘White Spot downtown’ go into Atomic’s space, they’d make a killing…
While the Corner isn’t too far out of my way for a 2am detour, parking sucks, but I guess it beats the drive-up window at you know where.

Ya get what you pay for at College Inn. When I’m lazy, hungry and being a tightwad, I can get a decent hot sub delivered for around $7.00. Not bad for a slight step up from fast food. Plus, when drinking or apres drinking, those gyros taste great (the drinking is key to the great taste).

I heart College Inn for delivery alone. When I’m sick of cardboard pizza and the worst Chinese EVER (there is not a single good Chinese restaurant in this town), College Inn is my go-to delivery place.

How is the new Chinese dim sum place next to Integral Yoga? anyone been? i agree all Chinese food to date (for the past 20+ years) sucks ass, though Dragon Lady and Taiwan Garden are the least terrible of the lot.
