Between 95.1 and Pandora’s classic Christmas station, I’m in a winter wonderland. What’s your favorite holiday song (and singer, if applicable)?
I’m a “Little Drummer Boy.” Perry, Bing, Frank, Dean, whoever sings it.

There’s a special corner of my heart, bedecked with boughs of holly and smelling of exquisitely roasting chestnuts, for Bad Religion’s rendition of “Silent Night”.
The more interesting question is what holiday song you hate.
And this is coming from someone who makes people play The Chipmunks Christmas Don’t Be Late at her annual holiday bash.
Bad Religion did “Silent Night”? I may have a new favorite.
Song I like: “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses.
What I don’t like: Christmas Muzak. I get ugly, violent flashbacks to the one Christmas I worked retail. At a Sears. [shudder]
I have the Chipmunks “Don’t Be Late” on my iTunes. I *had* the Chipmunks “12 Days of Christmas.” I start listening to holiday music the day after Thanksgiving (one of my better ruts, IMO), and the weasels lasted about five days this year. The Muppets “12 Days” can stay. BA-DA-DA-DA.
X-mas songs make me wanna punch babies.
“Hey Santa” by Wilson Phillips is the worst.
Great, now it’s in my head.
Santa’s Got a Brand New Bag (the Bobs with special guest Jonathan Katz on lead vocal). It’s obviously a riff on the James Brown tune, Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag. It’s Katz (the comedian, creator of Dr. Katz on Comedy Central way back when) telling his Jewish daughter the story of Santa Claus. Well worth your time…
If you want some awesome Christmas music and you know BitTorrent, google “Santa’s Boots torrent”.
Best.
Christmas Comp.
Ever.
I pretty much abhor Christmas music (you would too if you worked retail for over a decade), but there are a couple that do get me a little misty every season:
Low - “Just Like Christmas”
Belle & Sebastian - “O Come O Come Emmanuel”
The Qualities (with Sun Ra) - “It’s Christmastime”
Tralala - “Everybody Christmastime”
Run On - “Xmas Trip”
Dump - “Another Lonely Christmas” (Prince cover)
Milly & Silly - “Getting Down For Christmas” (the best damn funk instrumental featuring jingle bells you’ll ever hear)
The entire Phil Spector Christmas Album
i consider all of the posts above me null and void, because no one has mentioned ‘Santa Baby’ yet.
Fairytale of New York by The Pogues, ’nuff said.
Chad, I thought about it. Eartha Kitt’s got a hot little “come hither” to her voice. Then Madonna did it. And suddenly, it was “down on the pine needles you naughty thing, you like that don’t you, now hit me with your jingle bell, and get Prancer to stop kicking.”
Caroline… nice choice
Slade “Merry Christmas Everyone” or Wizzard “I wish it could be Christmas Everyday”
Now THAT will get any Paddies or Brits coming out of the woodwork. Rest of you won’t have a clue.
LMEAO
thanks flooz, I’m a sucker for an english accent.
sorry, no. it’s not hot, it’s annoying as hell.
A little off the beaten path, but great for deadheads and / or fans of acoustic music:

Also, I’d love to see more music discussed around here…
All types.
I don’t know if it’s ever been recorded, but I know a song called “The Twelve Days After Christmas” which is a right fair anodyne for the overly sentimental stuff we usually get pummeled with at this time of the year…
“The first day after Christmas my true love and I had a fight
And so I chopped the pear tree down and burned it just for spite,
Then with a single cartridge I shot that blasted partridge my true love gave to me….”
There are five million more verses, of course. I’m particularly fond of the one using the French hens to make some chicken soup….
The worst Christmas song of all time is whatever one is sung by Mariah Carey that is completely inescapable during the holiday season. I’ve yet to hear it this year, but my days are numbered.
The best Christmas song of all time is Run-DMC’s Christmas in Hollis. Next to that, there’s Low’s Just Like Christmas (nods to Baconfat in all of his wannabe indier-than-thou glory), which is pretty fucking beautiful. T. Rex’s Christmas Bop is perfect for cutting some rugs over the holidays. The Treacherous Three have a Christmas rap which is awesome because it eventually devolves into LA Sunshine rapping about economics before slowly getting back to the hook. Finally, Impact had a 7″ called Punk Christmas which is 1:59 of pure punk holiday cheer.
Since this has shifted to songs we hate, I am shocked — shocked! — that nobody has mentioned that treacly little tune of tripe, “The Christmas Shoes.” *HURK*
Oddly enough, if I actually am forced to listen to the thing, I cry anyway, while hating myself.
Another one that deserves to be purged from the memory of every living person on the planet is “Christmastime in Washington.” UGH.
In the love column, Chris Isaak’s album rocks. And I love Sarah McLachlan’s “Wintersong,” even though it’s a bit melancholy
there’s a station in DC that plays 24-7 christmas music during the christmas season. my mom listens to it. she thinks it’s awesome.
it is exactly the opposite of awesome.
OK, it’s not a song exactly, but they play it on NPR, and if you haven’t heard David Sedaris’ “Santaland Diaries” then you must immediately. Even if you know it by heart, (”You’re gonna have me fired? I’m gonna have you killed!”) you should really listen again. It never gets old.
I don’t care what you people say, I love the 24/7 Christmas radio stations. Except when they’re playing “Christmas Shoes.” God I hate that song so much. It’s not even really a song. It’s a guy telling a (bad) story with music playing in the background.
Tim, I’m with you. This started out as an “I love Christmas music!” thread and it went the way most cVillain threads usually do.
(To the bad place.)
