One More Reason to Love (or hate) the Falsies - C-Fest, part II

Hey. Wachadoin’ Saturday? Maybe you should mosey to the Satellite Ballroom where the second C-Fest production, Noble Savages, should be coming off nicely.

Anyone who caught last September’s Freak Fest will remember it as a suprisingly smooth-running crazy-quilt of odd acts leap-frogging between two stages with cameramen, audience and mixed-metaphors in tow. It was well-attended, it was a bucket-o-fun, and it worked largely due to the labors of its mastermind, one Lance Brenner (yes, that Lance Brenner) of The Naked Puritans, Thrum and, of course, the Falsies.

These C-Fest gigs (there are to be four culminating in a bash at the Pavillion) are a great venue for regional acts to get together, meld audiences, and actually have a good Charlottesville show to play. (Harder than it sounds.) All bands are photographed, filmed and recorded, and all materials are available to the bands for their own use. There’s even rumour of a “Charlottesville scene” DVD in the works.

Saturday’s Noble Savages will feature Beetnix, The Blackout Project, The Nice Jenkins, Kate Starr, The Vamanos, The Naked Puritans, The Sometime Favorites, In Technicolor, The Rogan Brothers, 3rd Party and Butterhouse. Doors open at 7pm, and advance tickets are only $10.

Speaking of pictures, I drove through a couple of neighborhoods last night hoping to see big non-denominational-holiday-light-displays and went home feeling like a stalker after 5 minutes. Please send general areas for me to go through at cvillainlilith@gmail.com.

I know there’s another post that specifically addresses holiday ornamentation, but I’m following your lead, Lilith. Have you all noticed that big internally-lit inflatables have supplanted icicle lights as the hot trend in outdoor holiday decorations? There are a few homes on my street that have three quarters of their lawn’s square footage bedecked with snow globes, snowmen, and Santa blowups. I haven’t seen Bea Arthur yet, but I’m sure she’s in someone’s yard somewhere. . .

The saddest thing is when they are unplugged at night, and the air literally goes out of the balloon. When I leave for work in the morning everyone’s yard is cluttered with deflated, post-tumescent thingies. Just like the downtown mall was after the Phil Lesh concert!

Hey, waitaminute! Get your own thread, damnit! Christmas lights? It would be funny if we weren’t powering our cars and homes with the blood of Saudi gang-rape victims! Be gone ye, back to gaudy crying baby jesus land!

R2? Zombies in ties… Didjaknow that the Kings of Belmont were supposed to play the first C-Fest (in September) - they were even on the t-shirts - but they backed out at the last minute (fools!) because their set was only 1/2 hour? Of course that’s all anybody got to play, but the Elvises of Belmont expected better, I guess. Ice cold shots of Jaeger perhaps, but they certainly didn’t “git ‘er done.”

There are those two hugely overdecorated houses in Belmont. I can’t remember the name of the street, but they’re right off Monticello Ave just before you get to I64 (turn left off Monticello Ave.) Last year it amused me greatly to see that one house was accepting tips, and the other house had a big sign saying, “Please do not leave tips. The display at 710 Whatever St. has NOTHING to do with the display at 712 Whatever St.”

That was pretty funny. They had a Christmas lights war. Pure class.

How does one tip on Christmas decoration. Scale, coloration, toomany icicles;not enough santas/frosties..whaaaa. Was egg nog served with a friendly ho ho? I ponder 5% or perhaps in a blizzard 7%. And where is my cheese ball? Ridiculous. Pay your own energy bill and think about people who struggle to heat their homes..decorations are nice but a personal choice not something that make a lot of other folk feel deprived.

Well, it is 11 bands for $10. If two of them are great then it’s worth it. And it does support the “local scene.” Also, there are at least three bands on this list that I haven’t seen, and am looking forward to. So I say, “yeah, it’s worth it.” Why not? The Kings of Belmont are pretty fun, too (though I haven’t seen them since they fleshed out the roster with more players), so I suspect either of these shows (or both, better yet) should be interesting.

Heard Lance on the radio this week talking up C-FEST. Kudos to him for a great idea. He seems to have an excellent appreciation of the better parts of our local music scene.

Freakfest was amazing! For many reasons, it may very well have been the show of the year. Noble Savages does has a top-shelf lineup for rock and hip-hop so… we’ll see. If it’s anything like Freakfest, Noble Savages will definitely be one of the best shows you’ve seen all year. Not to be missed!

I am the DJ for The Beetnix….And I will let you know when ever we do a show in Charlottesville it is insane….Damani and Lou (the 2 M.C.’s) have such high energy and really know how to get a crowd into it so I know at least for our set it will be amazing….Plus we have a few surprises up our sleeve too since this is our first semi show at home since our acoustic show at Gravity back in May….As for the other bands they are all amazing acts….Kate Starr and Butterhouse are in my top 10 local acts to catch….The Nice Jenkins put on a good show as well….I agree with Cripsy….You are paying $10 for 11 bands so I think it more than pays for itself….So come on out and support local music

Damn! Noble Savages was another great local fest! I really think Satellite’s a great place for these shows: it’s just big enough and the two stage setup works really well ‘cuz the music barely stops. I’m not sure about the first two bands (I got there about 9pm) but I dug the majority of the bands I saw. The top two sets IMO were Beetnix and Naked Puritans. They’re probably the best locals in their genres and both have a dynamic stage show. Last Butterhouse show, eh? It’s too bad, I really liked them as well. Fun night!
