So, I got all excited…
Lights art at night inspired by one of the coolest natural art exhibits ever? Hell ya. I know I talked it up yesterday and I do apologize.
We arrived at PVCC and proceeded to the rear balcony to witness the “fire dancing” which had just begun. Now, I have seen our local pyrotechnic dancer at Live Arts parties and I was thinking, oh it’s gonna be her. No, this dancer had some glowsticks and looked like he/she was at a rave, only I think no one was tripping on E and there was certainly no music. It gets worse.
What about the other art? Between the video taped dude putting a gun to his head and Christmas light brain matter analogy, the recessed scented candles, the pyramid of free floating humping glowsticks, and the charcoal fire with a iron top (yes that was it for one exhibit), we weren’t impressed.
The idea was certainly a cool one. Compared to other light shows I’ve seen (and I’m not talking about the natural bridge) there are much more interesting ways to play with light art.
The one exhibit that impressed us was the projected infrared image of birds on a giant 25 foot screen. Because the project was setup so far from the screen, children could become giants. Their enjoyment and interaction with the exhibit exemplified this one as our clear favorite.
Did anyone else go?

Didn’t go but I did go see “What Would Jesus Buy”.
It is playing at the Regal Downtown. Movie about the Church of Stop Shopping and Rev Billy. It is well worth it.
I missed a rave?
I went. Definitely disappointing. I dug the Sparrows, as well as Constellations, which was the one with the candles in the ice holders, especially the idea of people being able to interact with it and move the candles. The exhibit near the sparrows with the video projection on the hanging metal pieces was a cool idea, but you couldn’t really see the video and so it didn’t work for me. The rest was pretty weak sauce…the “humping glowsticks” (very well put Thor) looked like a reject prop from “Batman and Robin,” and those stained glass things at the back of the building looked like they were made by third graders. I didn’t realize digging holes and putting candles in the was art (I believe it was called Message From Earth…wtf?). Don’t even get me started on that guy blowing his brains out; not only was it cheap and desperate to be provocative, but he didn’t even have the gunshots and the lights in sync.
I saw the light show at PVCC. A lot of it was pretty lame. The spinning glow sticks were just the very beginning to the pyrotechnics. There was actually a pretty decent fire show after it, with music. You should have waited out the rave beginning.
yeah, didn’t see it but those folks are usually pretty good!
People still go to raves? I thought that went out w/ the cautionary 90210 episode held at The Peach Pit. I wish we had Peach Pit here. Sigh.
Did anyone else read the New Yorker piece about the performance artist who crucified himself to his Volkwagen? Honestly, it ruled out my ever even considering performance art as Career #6 down the road. “Well if that’s what I’m up against… nevermind.”
I wrote that New Yorker piece. It was called …let’s look over the heads of anyone who has a divergent opinion and isn’t part of the kewl crowd. You say..anyone read the New Yorker piece and I’m reminded of late night drunk talk when I was 19 going to Syracuse in 1982. Wait…Oy is going to call me out for not being amongst the “ins” ya…o.k. BTW…that blurb was really telling I believe it was..yo..you ain’t a part of us in this emerging community who went to Zinc one night and we are awesome because we can use really big words..and like blow up dolls and ya know get stuff more than youse who don’t. Is that incendiary? Orwell did it better. Whoops. Sorry….didn’t mean to unpc y’all. Also fuck you. And I’m drunk and you all are cute and typical of this teeny tiny town…now floozy will say something stupid and and you will think she is just the fucking bomb.
Typical response….a vacuous and funny BYO diatribe. And funny you are…or ha ha charade you are. The bear story …top notch. Now proceed to ignore or castigate me as is the rule of the mob.
YES. thank you. That summed up my response. ^
“numbers” (rather than words).
I once drove around for weeks with the reclaimed hind quarters of a beached minke whale strapped to the trunk of my car in a piece I called ‘tail fins’
Doesn’t crucifixion require a crucifix? Sounds more like fahrfignixion
What are the chances real me and faux-me post to the same thread at the same time? ‘doofus’…what the hell are you talking about?
How old was that New Yorker, lilith? that dude bolted himself to his beetle in 1974… seeing a chiropractor ever since
Taliesin: All of the nuevo-profoundo things you just said were foiled by the spelling of “cool” as “kewl.”
No.
No seriously.
Were you serious?
Taliesin…. in line with our new friendly organic site, I will take that vitriolic and bizarre tirade and put it down to PMS. I have marked my wall calendar for next month ( I assumed 28 day cycle? Just let me know if I am off there ) so I can cut you some slack in advance next month.Darn hormones eh! I am so looking forward to going tubing with you in the summer. I think you sound like you could be my new best friend.
i actually put together the fire show (music, and yes, fire), and i appreciate the response from the person who actually saw the show. for my first time doing coordinating one, and as many of those dancers had lit up only twice before, i was happy with it. next time it will be something to talk up, i assure everyone.
pepperkins.. sorry i missed the actual show. i often make mistakes!
pepperkins, I think it totally rocked the night out. There was sync. And the last part where everyone moved around the giant swirling fire was beautiful. It was the best part of the night. I’m glad you chimed in. The people I talked to thought it was great.
I want to know when there’s more fire play.
Taliesin,
Welcome to cVillain. Keep on postin’
I hereby change my handle to “Nipples Magoo”
Thank you!
And goodnight
thanks, random. we’ll let everyone know when the next show will be. it’s been too cold to do much practicing outside, despite it being fire and all, so look to the later spring/early summer months… we’ll be practicing outside mcguffey second thursdays when it gets warmer again, too.
just wanted to add something – i had went to this show with a friend – showed up in inappropriate footwear (with a fancy party to attend later) and was bummed. i didn’t really realize what trekking around the grounds would have been necessary, and i wished i had some warm boots. the idea seemed lovely and i esp liked how many kids i saw and thought it would be a fun evening out for a family.
