Alarac, isn’t that the Dunkel Wiezen (although not named correctly)?

  14. 20 Dec 2007 at 11:40 amAlarac said:

No, that’s König Weissbier Dunkel named correctly AND subject to the German Purity Law of 1516 that was the finest contribution to libation tradition ever.

I voted for sahti, just so it would feel some love, but truly dunkle, hefe, pony, and sahti are all right up there at the top, followed by JPA and altbier. never had a Hogwaller, I’ll have to get around to that at some point. Claiborne(sp.?) is one of the best bartenders in this town. Is she still there? I used to be able to get a beer from 4 deep on a Tuesday night!

I like the Bourbon barrel stout they occasionally have on tap. While good, I ususally have to cool it after a couple pints of S.S., lest I gaurantee myself a raging headache in the morning.

  17. 20 Dec 2007 at 11:59 amThor said:

dave, is the Bourbon barrel stout their own or Jefferson Brewery?

  18. 20 Dec 2007 at 12:10 pmdave said:

Hmmm….I *think* its their own. Sometimes they have it as a cask ale, too.
Incidentally, I had a glass of the Jefferson B.B. stout at Beer Run last night.
    Nice beer. Nice place.

I can gladly say I have.

Well, i was compelled to try the entire variety @ SS after my “Ultimate Beer” post, and I did.

It took a while of course. Two SS beers and I’m googly-eyed. Christmas wishlist: more beer and wine flights.

We were four people ordering different beers sampling each others. I was googly eyed, and I can’t say that I recall the various flavors of beer, but I darn well did it. My Danish Friends have impressive stamina, and held me above the table, as SS was the third and last stop on the infamous wine tour.

Voted Absolution Ale, but almost all of them are excellent. A few of them are just “okay.”

SS beers are categorically bland and underwhelming. Satan’s Pony is drinkable but dispreferred as a beer. I abstain from voting on principle.

  30. 20 Dec 2007 at 5:14 pmThor said:

Stanley.. really!? I’ve drank a lot of beers in my day. By bland, do you mean not aggressive? I do like smoother more balanced tastes as opposed to huge florals, intense hops, etc etc…

  31. 20 Dec 2007 at 5:47 pmStanley said:

Thor: basically, yeah. They all seem like they’re decently flavored, then watered down or something. To each his own, and all that.

Everyone does have their own taste in beer, which is why I find it so odd that there is a site devoted to beer rating. Who can tell you what good beer is when everyone wants something different out of a beer? As for watering down I would say South Street is not as watered down as some beers. I would use the newly Anheuser-Busch(ed) Starr Hill as an example. Their beer is just plain lacking (mainly in any sort of robust flavor).

All their beers are served slightly too warm for my taste. So good for me they have a decent wine by the glass selection. But I love love love the smiley bartenders and cozy atmosphere. And the manager is a cool guy. Still better than Starr Hill in my book.
Although I miss Starr Hill for the music….

Yo Stan - tell us what you like so we can agree, disagree, or run out and get us some.

Lilith - I’ve had all of SS’s brews. I try to get back there often enough to see if they’ve come up with anything new — and catch it before it’s gone.

Love the cask, Dunkel Weizen (Drunken Weasel), Anastasia’s Chocolate Fantasy (a Stout). Anybody remember Aisling Stout? Haven’t seen it in years, but it was similar to Guiness.

I believe the Porter’s name is “Porter’s Porter”. Hogwaller is SS’s answer to Bud Light. Or at least to Bud Light drinkers. Americans should learn to enjoy their beer warmer. (No, don’t put your Coors Light in the microwave — I’m talkin’ about Beer.)

Gladly! But that will have to be tomorrow. Tonight, Stone Brewing Co.’s Arrogant Bastard has determined that I can type only this sentence.

watered down? I think you’ve confused SS with Starr Hill, or possibly Natty Light. Lay off the crack.

Stanley, did you try the Lucifer at Michael’s last eve? J-Rock and I gave the Belgian dubbel a taste - ’twas not bad. The Bastard definitely lays the wood though!

30: Nope. Not confused. Welcome to the internet subjective opinion, Cojo.

As promised, a (probably incomplete) compendium on beers I enjoy:

    Internationals
    -Cerveza Quilmes
    -Chimay (the whole line)
    -Corsendonk (the whole line)
    -Dos Equis Ámbar
    -Fullers ESB
    -Harp Lager
    -Negra Modelo
    -Peroni
-Samuel Smith’s (the whole line, especially the India Ale and the Nut Brown)

    Domestics (non-Virginia)
    -Brooklyn (the whole line)
-Dogfish Head (the whole line, I think)
    -Green Flash West Coast IPA
    -Lagunitas (the whole line)
    -Left hand (the whole line)
    -Nectar (the whole line)
    -North Coast (the whole line)
-PBR (when I’d like something light and cheap but still reasonably flavorful)
-Red Stripe (when the mood strikes/I want teeny stubby bottles)
    -Rogue Dead Guy
-Shiner Bock (for my Texas homies)
    -Sierra Nevada (the whole line)
    -Smuttynose (the whole line)
-Tecate (overpriced, but brings nostalgia for the Atomic Burrito days)
    -Yuengling Lager (when in Philly)

    Virginians
    -Dominion/Tupper’s Hop Pocket
-Extra Billy’s (in Richmond; full disclosure: I used to work there, but it’s still good beer)
-Legend (the whole line, especially the Brown)

    ***
    Hope that helps. Enjoy!

mmm, Peroni. I’ve given Christian shit several times for not having Peroni.

Used to live above an Italian restaurant in London - when the smells became too much to bear, I’d go downstairs and have some amazing garlic bread and a Peroni. That beer is as much about memories as it is taste (moreso probably - had some in Venice, but it just wasn’ t the same (weird, I know))

I’ll take a nice red Moretti over a Peroni, personally. Yeah I know they’re owned by Heineken, but who isn’t these days.

Stan–Legend! Yes! I always look forward to their seasonals because they rarely disappoint. And the Pilsner is out of this world good. But, I like SS, too.

Hogwaller Kolsch bears no resemblance whatsoever to Bud Light. It’s floral, hoppy, bright and sparkling. I love it :)
