Several Ways to View This or Any Other Blog or Website at Work (If It’s Blocked)

In response to our recent “Does your employer reprimand you for writing on (or reading) cVillain?” I thought it would be a good idea to let you know some run arounds for participating, despite the fact that your employer has decided to cut off your lifeblood. There are many ways employers can block you from cVillain or any other webiste. It sucks and here are a few (mostly free) secrets I’ve learned over the years that are relatively easy and for the non-technical minded. I am no technical person, but what happens is the employer buys a network monitoring software/hardware solution and then they can select domains that their employees can’t visit. Want to know how to get around this?

1. RSS Feeds. If you are not familiar with RSS feeds, they are a format of our content that gets distributed around the net. Sites like cvilleblogs.com take this content and redistribute it for you to view. Unfortunately, cvilleblogs doesn’t let you customize what RSS Feeds you want to read, but you can create your own customized list of feeds! You can subscribe to our comments or our main content. Simply use a feed reader like Bloglines, Google Feed Reader or anything else. We don’t have too many RSS feeders (and we prefer that people come visit our site) but we want to let you read even if you can’t get here.

2. Email Subscriptions. We plan to transition our current email system over to Feedburner. Sign up here. Of course this only gives you daily updates, but it’s the best we can do.

3. Translate it from English to Your Favorite Language. Just go to Google translate and if you are really smart, you can read our webpage in any non-English language.

4. Setup a Tor. While setting up a Tor isn’t for the technically unsavvy, it does provide you with very good anonymity for browsing websites. No promises on this one, but your employer won’t be able to track your online usage if you setup this one correctly. Check the wiki for more info as well.

5. Use the Bitty Browser. Head over to the site and punch in the standard name. It’s really easy and works for non-savvy users.

6. Use Coral. While using Coral might not seem like the most exciting thing on the internets, just use this URL instead of the standard one: http://www.cvillain.com.nyud.net:8090/

7.  Use Anonymizer.  You have to buy it, but it works pretty well.

7. There are a lot of other workarounds out there. Explore additional resources and drop us a hint if you get blocked at work!

Actually this is far easier than you suggest: just use a web proxy. For example, go to HideMyAss.com and click the “Hide My Ass” button. To then go to Cvillain type the URL in the special location bar.

This works for any web proxy so long as the proxy itself is not blocked by your workplace. But since there are MANY available, with a little research you should be okay.

I am sooooo reading Cvillain when I’m supposed to be working. Hidemyass.com is sweet. I’m gonna go check my Myspace now too.
