Capshaw.. PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN, I KNOW YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS. A music nut just sent me this link about Zep playing at Bonnaroo:
Led Zeppelin will reportedly play their first US show in over 30 years at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. The news source is an email in a newsletter written by Bob Lefsetz, who publishes The Lefsetz Letter which looks at the music industry. The email also reported that Metallica will headline the festival, set to take place in June, says Billboard.
All I can say is rock on. I’m excited! Does anyone else have the deets on this one?

I have no details to add to this. But I will do anything, ANYTHING, to make this happen. Sacrificing small puppies and kittens would not be out of the question.
I’m kind of ambivalent about this. Noone who isn’t rolling in money will be able to get themselves within a mile of that performance, and then what if they just weren’t any good? Factor in that if they’re going to spend the time rehearsing enough to put on a competent show, they’re practically committed to touring anyway, and I guess Bonaroo becomes important, but only for what it might generate.. I haven’t read any reviews of the show they played in England, may have to see if they were any good…
I saw Robert Plant live two nights in a row years back, and he performed LZ material, which certainly made those shows memorable, but those guys getting together for one more show’d be too much like opening a time capsule, usually a disappointment.
I heard their shows were awesome. There are videos on YOUTUBE
man that was good english!
tim - animal sacrifice is so gauche these days! the real question is, how many five-year-olds would you take out to make this happen?
I’m pretty sure the cost of festival tickets won’t go up much if at all, but the demand will. (Last year, the Police kicked off their tour at Bonnaroo, and I seem to recall the pre-hype, hype, and post-hype being big.) It will probably sell out, so scalped tickets will be obscenely priced. I’m feeling pretty confident it won’t be a total s***-show for two reasons:
1. Bonnaroo is not for everyone. That is some serious camping, so most people are going to drive there, and Tennessee ain’t close to everything (though it ain’t bad). I’ve been to a muddy drug-infested festival with occasional rain storms, and I was surprised with what I saw. It wasn’t even a big festival!
In 30 years, it will be cool to tell my kids, “I saw Led Zeppelin’s reunion tour!” It would be a TRILLION times cooler to tell them, “I saw Led Zeppelin’s first reunion concert at Bonnaroo!” but hey, Bonnaroo’s not for everyone.
2. They’ll go on tour across the country after the festival, right?
A goo substitute btw is Zoso. I saw them a couple of times at Star Hill, and it was always a blast. They look and sound pretty close to the real thing. I hope Satellite brings them to town soon.
Yeah that would be a “gooD substitute”. Perhaps the mimosas are going to work.
Buster, I believe clubbing baby seals was “big” circa 1990 when all of those Human-i-Tees Earth Day shirts were popular, and it’s making a comeback as retro. Five year-olds are the new black, though, yes.
The same site also has a story about them considering a tour of UK stadiums as well:

They are not playing Bonaroo.
Sorry for the mis-type. It should have read : Bonnaroo. Nor will they be at JPJ. It’s not going to happen.
I wouldn’t be surprised about Bonnaroo.. but JPJ is way too small for them.
Maybe they’ll make an exception for JPJ. I mean, it does bear the name of their bassist.
I jumped the gun on getting excited and skeptical all at once. All of my “future tense” words should be “future conditional.” The hype has existed for months… sigh.
Scott Stadium isn’t too small but I think Charlottesville is…
late summer/early fall would fit right in, so open air arenas would be perfect…
speculation has existed for years, not months. those shows I saw in NY 15 or so years ago were rumored to be Plant/Page reunions that didn’t happen at that time, but this time there has actually been a reunion show already, so who knows?
answer: evenstar, apparently
That’s true. I do know.
They will tour, but not at Bonnaroo or central Virginia.
It’s wonderful to read hipster-doofus’s expert opinion. Please let everyone know when the prime tour schedules are and when certain dates can fit in.
evenstar,
what expert opinion? They played two weeks ago. They’re ready. If they’re going to tour, one would assume it would be this year. Its possibly too late for a spring tour already (I don’t know this, but one who have to assume that venues will already have been booked on choice dates, ticket sales and promotions need a little lead time, etc…) If they’re going to do it at all, they’re presumably going to play larger venues, say.. Giants Stadium over Madison Square Garden, so that means open air, generally which would make late fall/winter less likely, I would think. That leaves summer/early fall, no? Bonaroo fits right in there?….
Clearly you know more, so enlighten us…
can you really call Zoso a good substitute for Zeppelin? ugh
if i were to guess i’d say a one-off show at bonnaroo would be more realistic than a full out tour. every year bonnaroo seems to keep trying to find that “pinnacle” band to try and outdo themselves over the previous year — The Police in 07, Radiohead 06, DMB 05, etc. and they certainly have the loot behind them i’d image for a Zeppelin-esque band. especially now that they own the plot of land it’s on i think?
but agreed - how could they skip over the john paul jones arena if they do end up touring? too perfect.
H-D: Led Zeppelin will not be playing Bonnaroo. It’s amusing to read your speculations. Stick to what you know. Your wry takes on Charlottesville are safer.
sounds like an H-D vs. Evenstar bet is in order…
any wagers?
“More realistic”, huh? Actually, a full tour makes more sense than a show in Tennessee. What type of background provides you with the confidence to post your inane ramblings about this topic? “I’d say” this and “Charlottesville is too small” that. Your considered opinion is worthless.
hahaha.
whatever. it just seems (to me) like a show that would net them at least a couple million in the middle of TN that would require zero promo, marketing, road scheduling, etc. on their part would be pretty appealing to me for a bunch of ~60 yr. old rockers.
but who knows — guess we’ll just ramble on…
Meow hiss.
Immigrant Song has been in my head all day! Alternating with Perry Como Christmas songs! Which is awesome!
I’m assuming evenstar works for Capshaw.
she’s totally expert.
totally.
I was hoping for a Charlottesville show… even half expecting to hear a tour announcent soon. But not for Bonnaroo. I wouldn’t go anyway. I like camping but not with that many people. I’ll take evenstar’s side in a bet. Sorry h-d.
merry christmas everyone!
lilith: i do well remember those days of clubbing baby seals; i’ve still got a few skins under my bed. i find the five-year-old thing amusing because within the past year i’ve had several conversations with folks about which one weapon they’d choose to fend off an infinite army of those five-year-olds, and no one can agree on an answer. perhaps a baby seal is what we’ve been looking for all along?
also, um, rowr?
Ha! I bet no one thought to answer wet willies or whitewashes. Oh man, I hated those then and I do now.
Bonnaroo has gone the way of the suck.
evanstar– i chaenge you to a knowledge duel!!
we know the same folks, if you are who i think you are, and are privy to some of the same info. i have it on fair authority that the chances of LZ playing the ‘roo are pretty good. of, course, i coud lose two of my jobs for posting this, so its a good thing i have such anonymity around here.
i, personay, hope they dont play. i am sick pf baonnaroo being the playground fro aging rockers clinging desperately to their youths. i’d ike to say i saw zepplin, sure, but i’d ike to be able to say i saw them when they were good.
either way, i’ll be at the ‘roo.
who wants to jump in the RV with me??
You’ve got the right idea. The ONLY way I would do it is in VIP with an RV. And not one of those Cruise America POS RVs.
Of course, even if they were able to put together a cohesive, relevant line up (fat chance), the tents would primarily be full of crap. I miss the days of literally cursing the line up for the tough decisions that had to be made for every single set of the day. There were great acts playing against each other all the time. The year my path was obvious, meaning there was a clear “main” act for almost every slot, I knew it was over. I’m pretty sure that was the same year VH1 sent a reporter, and kids started dying of ODs in the camps. I gave it one more year. That was the year more people seemed to be there for the camp than for the music (remember the strip club?!?). It was fun while it lasted.
10KLF, Waka, and AllGood are so much more pleasant.
i usually “work” at bonnaroo– which means free admission, camping backstage with friends, and all the beer i can drink. this wi be my fourth year working, though i did attend earlier ‘roo’s as a civilian. i wi never go back. i am by no means a snob, but after tasting the sweet life of clean porta potties and easy access to hotel room showers, i am a spoiled girl.
i havent been impressed with the line up on the large and whole for a few years now, but there are aways a few bands i want to see, and always a few i havent given a fair chance to. i’ve discovered alot of music at bonnaroo just wandering around, and hope to do the same this year. we’ll see. if zepplin plays, i’ll try to work that shift.
stoked about langerado this year– they are finally moving it to a camp site, so we can a kiss day tickets good bye, thank god.
my summer festiva schedue is shaping up to be sparse, but fun: langerado, bonnaroo, all good, maybe wakarusa. who knows. who cares.
*shrug* it’s not Zeppelin without Bonzo.
hh, should I propose a little wager with evenstar? how solid is your information?
i don’t trust any of my sources completely until it’s a done deal and gambling does nothing for me, so a wager holds little shine for me.
i don’t care, honestly. rumors fly left and right in this town, and i have learned to question the veracity of every statement, no matter how solid the lead. so, you know, whatever and stuff.
If you’re a Zep fan, check out the vids on youtube. I was impressed. The band was on, together, and confident.
Re: Bonnaroo, I don’t see this happening. I’m not in the know, nor talking with people who are, but it just doesn’t make sense logically.
Why would LZ play bonnaroo? Can’t think of a solid reason.
If they did, I think they’d fit and blow it away. Would be practically untoppable. But I still don’t see it happening (my nonexpert $.02).
Hey Evenstar - any comment on this link?
oy, i love you.
you’re only human, baby doll
(and why aren’t I next in the makeout chain? Ok, ok - lilith can be next, but I’m after her)
agreed.
