New Year’s Resolutions

I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, but if I did, they’d look a little something like this…

I will try new restaurants!
You may have noticed that I’m a slightly downtown-centric diner. (Really? GASP.) Every year, I save a copy of one of the readily available restaurant lists in a local newsweekly and check off restaurants I’ve been to. It is nowhere near complete by December 31! This is going to be the year I go to the Bavarian Chef and probably continue to skip most order-out pizza places. (I’m loyal to one, not anti-pizza.)

I will go back to restaurants I used to go to often.
Wait staff, interior design, menu, even management change in the course of a year. For me, these places are mostly on the Corner, so I’d look forward to the change of credit card charge, too!

I will volunteer.
I’m glad readers find us to be a service to the community, but writing as Lilith for no pay just doesn’t feel like community service! Hmm. Anyway, myriad non-profit organizations need help from the community. If I can’t give money, I’ll give time. If you’re not sure what kind of organization would be a good fit for you, try a search on volunteermatch.org.

I will go see new bands.
The times I’ve done this are few and far between, but worth it. If you’re hesitant to pay to see performers you know little about, try this trick: put WNRN and 106.1 on your speed dial and call in to every ticket giveaway! Their numbers are (434) 979-0919 and (434) 970-1061, respectively. It works for me, sometimes. I try not to get too upset when I’m caller 1 and 2 for a “be caller 3″ situation and some other villain happens to get through. Just a little road rage. Swerving and profanity. I’m FINE, dammit.

I will support local businesses.
It’s soup. It’s wine. It’s stationery. It’s got to stop! Local places do it all better.

I will be a tourist.
An historical tour of the Lawn or a walk through the University Art Gallery would take an hour. Why not? I’m still kicking myself for missing the Klan room last month at the gallery.

I will work out more often.
Ha! I don’t make resolutions because of resolutions like this. If I’m the only person I have to answer to when I don’t follow through, I’m really easy on myself. But seriously, you guys should make resolutions… they’re awesome and stuff…

I will read cVillain.com every day.
This is the best resolution anyone can make. Ever. :)

Here are mine, in case anyone cares…
    1. I will go back to yoga
    2. I will try to swear less (a friend’s toddle repeated the word shit for an hour after hearing me say it - time to clean things up in person at least)
    3. I will do something cultural at least once a month (see a play, concert, art gallery, etc.)
    4. I will find a new job if I am still discontent in 3 months
    5. I will be better about visiting friends out of town (aka driving to DC can’t be all that bad)
    6. Maybe I’ll join a book club if I can find one (hint hint H-D, if I’m remembering correctly)
    7. I will keep eating local, making everything from scratch and supporting restaurants that do the same
    8. I will buy clothes/shoes because they serve a need or I look great in them, not because they are on sale and (sorta) fit
    9. I will go hiking again (let’s aim for at least 6 times this year)

    2. I will join some sort of athletic team.
    3. I will be more social
    4. I will go visit my brother in Florida (the one I don’t get along with so well)
    5. I will attend the last game played at Yankee Stadium, and it’ll be a World Series winning one.
    6. I will volunteer myself (help me out there, Silmo)
    7. No more vendetta after 2008 unless the Supreme Court says so.
    8. I will finish projects that I’ve put off for too long already.
    9. I will not buy another television (my regular one died, so I’m left with a tiny little 13″ one, but fuck it, its time down the drain anyway)[now, if someone were to give me one, thats another story…]
    10. I will spend more time on the water this summer.
