I don’t think cvillain should cover national political issues unless it pertains to something locally directly.

  2. 04 Jan 2008 at 1:25 pmhipster-doofus said:

How ’bout we limit it to once a month as a new thread? That way the people who want to post something can dig up the last one and add to it, but it keeps it off the front page? It would allow you to judge interest as well… good compromise?

  3. 04 Jan 2008 at 1:29 pmstuart said:

cvillian is about power. people post, people comment. who are we to edit? People will respond accordingly and the blog will spin on an even axis.

I’m guessing the threads will be longer when there is smooching involved or food.

So I answered this question in the wrong place. Please see “Huckabee & Obama” Isn’t enough that is all we hear about when we turn on the news these days?! We do not need it in our internet/social relief.

If people have GOSSIP about political events or politicians, let it fly. There are plenty of blogs out there were people can talk about general politics, news, and the election.

For example, when a prominent, wealthy [read: Farmington CC member] lawyer in town responded to my Craigslist ad selling something and offered me 40% of the asking price because he claimed he was poor, I wanted to gossip about it. This site didn’t exist back then, though.

Leave the political banter for those with nothing important to discuss. I don’t think Hillary/Obama/Huckabee would even register a blip on the radar of local topics such as “Siips-Crush-Enoteca; the three headed wine-monster of Charlottesville.” With serious issues like this facing our local social scene, who needs caucus discussion?

  9. 04 Jan 2008 at 2:28 pmKCB said:

The one problem I’ve noticed on other stops on the web highway is that you can have two or three people who are intransigient (doesn’t matter which end of the political spectrum) and you have endless back and forth of these people linking to other websites that make their inane argument. There’s no substantive discussion unless you consider “You’re an idiot and here’s a link to a site that outlines how people like you are idiots” repeated ad infinitum great dialogue.

One of the New Yorker cartoons I have up in my office shows two dogs chatting and the tagline is “I had a blog of my own for a while, but I decided to go back to just pointless, incessant barking.” (google it for the image)

Like KCB, that’s how I feel about 99% of political blogs.

  11. 04 Jan 2008 at 2:49 pmcaroline said:

we should be free to discuss whatever is on our minds, you have the freedom to go to the next page.

  12. 04 Jan 2008 at 2:59 pmLys said:

You also have the freedom to start your own political blog, and we have the freedom to make fun of posters with a political itch to scratch : )

  13. 04 Jan 2008 at 3:06 pmDan from Eppie's said:

Quick thoughts. I think that for most people the big 3 topics not to discuss in public are money, religion, and politics. I can understand the first two, but I don’t see any problem with polite, thoughtful posts about politics, which is what I would expect to find here. I feel like this site’s got a pretty tight group of readers/posters. I wouldn’t expect any posts like “you’re supporting the so-and-so party? how can you be such a nutter?” And while I read a lot of political blogs (TPM, Daily Dish, etc.), I don’t know anywhere else I could find the pulse of local, generally like-minded folk on national issues.

  14. 04 Jan 2008 at 3:23 pmcaroline said:

Lys- I’m not sayin’ I’m all “I must talk about politics all the time, I have an itch!” I’m just sayin it’s okay to talk about things happening politically sometimes… And you can make fun of me too, I’m cool with that.

  15. 04 Jan 2008 at 3:41 pmLys said:

Caroline, I agree. I just get nervous as this town can get a bit overly political at times and I’d hate for that to become a predominent theme here (but that’s just me being selfish).

  16. 04 Jan 2008 at 4:05 pmDan from Eppie's said:

I second Lys. Although I consider myself a news junkie, I wouldn’t want to see cVillain talk politics everyday, or maybe even every week. Just when big stuff happens (locally or nationally).

You idiot republicans are driving me nuts!

Dan - Since when do we have civilized conversations about anything on this site? Once comment 15 rolls around, it’s crazy-town around here

  18. 04 Jan 2008 at 4:28 pmdharmaguy said:

Yes, on local issues. Like Jim Camblos continuing to be a cry baby about losing to Denise Lunsford. He needs to be outed for not going away quietly and with dignity. Believe me, if she were a male, this crap would not be going on. I believe there is an orchestrated effort to undermine her or tarnish her and it should be outed so the good ‘ole boys cannot get away with this crap.

  19. 04 Jan 2008 at 4:43 pmSilmo Syrup said:

I can’t stand Jim Camblos! He’s none-too-bright, mildly evil, and, quite frankly, looks a bit too much like Dick Cheney for my own comfort.

    SS,
Based on who I think reads and posts here, I respectfully disagree. Maybe I’m being naive, but I think most folks see this as a community, or as I do, as a loose group of friends and acquaintances. I occasionally talk politics with friends (i.e. once every four years, at times like these), and I don’t think that’d be a problem here.
    Off to work.

Dan from Eppies, I believe you are right, and I insist the fourth is sports, “thou shall not discuss sports” (because then i get a migraine headache) And for that same reason I do not watch CNN or any other news channel, I a severely allergic to talking heads and their endless stream of “I think I think yaddiyadiya.” BUT we are much more clever and funny, and we discuss everything because we don’t have to pay per millimeter of space we have infinite internet pages at our disposal, and those who wants to give their two cents on politics, well it does concern us on a global, national and local level, why shouldn’t they?

    LET us posteroo about politics.

And I would like to see a poll (because I get really hot for numbers and statistics) if we had our primaries today who would you vote for.

The accuracy is in the weather because of the skewed representation of readers/writer on this site, but it would give an interesting preview, and food for discussion.

Thor I leave it in your hands who would you vote for:

    Barack Obama
    John Edwards
    Hillary Clinton
    Bill Richardson
    Joe Biden
    Chris Dodd
    Dennis Kucinich

    Mike Huckabee
    Mitt Romney
    Fred Thompson
    John McCain
    Ron Paul
    Rudy Giuliani
    Duncan Hunter

I think the really important thing isn’t so much what people talk about, but who’s talking. This site is pretty insular (I mean that in a good way) and I would think it’d be OK to hear many of the posters talk about politics… or hell, money or religion or sports, or sex. (Huh? You already talk about sex? Oh, right.)

My take is that you guys should just moderate after the fact - if somebody starts acting like an ass, just delete their post. It’s not a democracy, exactly, but half the fun is seeing what people say. I realize that might sound time-consuming, but after a few deleted posts, the real assholes get bored and move on.

(BTW, Lys, it may be an old joke, but the New Yorker comic totally made me laugh out loud. So perfect.)

I think the strength of this blog is the local flavor. I agree that you can not / should not attempt to contol the content or comments, except for vulgarity and such. I wish not to include the discussion of national politics here. It’s fun now and sometimes educational….don’t wreck it.

Most importantly, I don’t want to hear all you libs…you all drive me nuts!!!

#27 caroline, I will be out of town, but watching the debates (sorry to all who don’t want political posts . . . I understand but I just can’t help myself.) According to an AP story in today’s Progress, it’s possible that the Virginia primaries could play a pivitol role in deciding the nominees for both parties (is that enough local slant to make this post acceptable?) Maybe the villain should consider an endorsement . . .

Ron Paul might not win this year, but his martyrdom will be a catalyst for major change in American politics in the years to come.

    Yeah, just like Perot…

Face it - we’ve got a Gaius Marius or a Sulla in the White House (without the military prowess) - how long before the Julii rise? Our Republic is doing a nice Coriolis effect right down the shitter…

Just pray we get an Augustus (I call dibs on being the next Caligula). Cincinnatus ain’t coming to save us.

(btw, Caroline, I’m a pure bred Libertarian, baby :) )

I think that there are more libertarians per capita in the 18-25 year old demographic than any other age group. So in 15-20 years we might actually get our way. Ron Paul has like 41% of the support on facebook, which might not seem relevant, but I think it can be seen as indicative of the growing support of libertarianism among the youngest bloc of voters.

In 15 to 20 years your demographic will be homeowning, child-rearing, and too invested in society to want to tear it down. I like RP’s hutzpah but I think libertarianism is ill-conceived. Government is necessary and in many instances good. Libertarians tend to forget the important role the government plays in their own success. To wit, anti-government coffee shop owners on the mall… they claim they owe their success to their own hard work and vision, and that the government is just a burden. While I won’t underestimate the importance of their hard work and vision, I would say that if it wasn’t for the fact that the government spent tax dollars to build the mall, their coffee cart would have gone out of business well before it had a chance to blossom into the business it is today.

GW Bush has done more to increase the support for libertarianism than any big spending Democrat every could have. I think it’s ill-conceived too, but that’s another story… reminds me an Ayn Rand plot “a novel wherein the industrialists of America go on strike and retreat to a mountainous hideaway, where they build an independent free economy with gold currency. The American economy and its society in general, deprived of its most productive members, slowly start to collapse.” Add Angelina Jolie (Atlas Shrugged). If she’s exploiting it, libertarianism must be popular!

‘nuther vote for Obama/McCain, that’ll be it for Giuliani, Thompson. But Huckabee, Romney and Ron Paul (who’ll do surprisingly well tomorrow) will stick around. Hillary third, and fading fast!

Ron Paul will kick it into high gear tomorrow, but not will be forgotten in a two weeks

Edwards will come in a miserable third but will last through SC (and maybe a little longer)
Surprise of the eve: Richardson will come close to beating Edwards, giving him a few weeks more to live AND a (remote but) possible Veep gig. If not, he’ll be offered Sec of State or UN or some shit he won’t take
