Migration: A Gallery
Stephen L. Griffin: Strata
119 Fifth Street SE
I liked the paintings. But I wasn’t really going for the art. Laura and Rob Jones opened Migration about two years ago, and it was hilarious to hear them talk about renovating the space themselves. Their bio on their website says it all– they’re a great couple with a lot of expertise, doing what they love. Interesting blown glass and cut metal pieces are being shown, too, if you need an excuse to meet the owners.
Check out Rob’s blog at www.artpark.typepad.com. I especially liked this entry about museum design vis-a-vis the art inside.

Kris Bowmaster: Variations in Doing Time
211 West Main Street
This gallery, like many spaces on the downtown mall, is long and narrow, and it was difficult to maneuver through the space. However, Bowmaster’s work was worth the quick look around. In his bio, Bowmaster wrote, “My compassion is carefully divided between children, the lonely, and flat tires, leaving very little left for house pets.” Okaaay. Bowmaster was on hand as the curator, and I have to admit I was a bit disappointed to find out he was not the inmate. The hosts were very accommodating, but is it so much to ask to have a proven criminal around, preferably a creative embezzler or a high-speed car chase survivor?

Thanks for dropping by Migration, Lilith. It’s always good to chat and tell our story. Laura and I are working hard to bring some of the best art from around the country to Cville. Glad you enjoyed it.

I’ve been to the Blanton! It is humongous, and I remember the art being really impressive. One work was the craziest optical illusion I’ve yet seen. I’m a semiannual Hirshhorner and a biannual MoMAer. Blanton can hang.
