Take 64 West to the Wintergreen exit. Turn left on 250 West, then left on 151 South. The Blue Mountain Brewery will be on your left. GO! Tomorrow night! (They’re closed Monday and Tuesday, but they shave a buck off every pint tomorrow.)
My friend and I were headed that way to go wine tasting, so the brewery was a surprise ending to what was already a relaxing, warm Sunday in the Blue Ridge. We each had the tasting sampler, six shot-size pours of beer for $5. [Note: I just got up to get a beer, just because reflecting on the beer made me want one. Unfortunately, Budweiser is not doing it for me like the Kolsch.] We split a cup of their parsnip soup with truffle oil drizzle ($3.50 I think) and the meat and cheese plate (not more than $10) and were treated to home made mustard. The value was great. Beer-lovers will be impressed, and beer-not-so-muchers can drink wine from Nelson County wineries. The food is all local, as far as I remember, and I would have taken home a growler of the soup if I could have. (But, then, I didn’t ask…)
The tasting/dining space is one high-ceiling room with several large, thick wood tables across soapstone floors. It felt comfortable and rustic. We were seated on a couch at the fireplace, as the tables were all full. The staff exuded what felt like genuine happiness to be there, and even though we were with the last to leave, they didn’t hurry us in the least.
A few Belgian style beers are going to be ready mid-month. I recall a Tripel, but don’t quote me. I’m happy for the excuse to go back for more soup.
You know, I write about Charlottesville every day, and it’s a real privilege to know my experiences of local businesses matter, even just to be heard as a consumer. I have to stop lingering on the minutia from time to time, though, and appreciate just how good we have it.
Not the beer talking.

That place is quite awesome and i like a good pun, so naturally ‘full nelson’ is my favorite beer that they offer.
NO- do NOT go TODAY as they are closed every Monday and Tuesday. Go any other day-esp. WED. when all pints are a dollar off ! It is so fantastic to have a place like this right here in our own backyard. All the food is fresh, local, and the Bratwurst Pizza is to die for.
Thanks, jls5k0! I’ll edit it.
So this is why you did not make it to the Mando Mafia concert Lilith! For a lover of mandolin, this is the only viable reason that could have been used as your excuse…
But there were at least a couple of Cvillains there.
Horatio, are we chums? Or was it the lack of a Monday morning gushing over mandolin that tipped you off?
Beer Run will have Full Nelson on tap imminently . . . and soon, too! But make sure to go to the brewery for the complete experience.
I would not know you Lilith from Osama Bin Laden (for all I know, you are he). After not reading anything in your weekend review, and then reading you spent Sunday afternoon in Nelson County, I simply surmised you did not make it.
Afton : Blue Mountain Brewery Unveils New Belgian Style Dubbel Ale : Friday 1-11-08
Evil 8° is a Belgian style Dubbel Ale. It is brewed in the Abbey style, following the tradition of the Trappist Monks. It uses imported caramelized Biscuit malt, Goldings hops and a unique strain of brewers’ yeast that actually comes from one of the six remaining Trappist monastery breweries. It comes in at 7.7% alcohol, and has a rounded sweet malt flavor that carries throughout the palate of the beer.

Just returned from THE Brewery…. Evil 8 is EVIL ! Had a great time -fantastic beers and good food………I am smiling….
The meat/cheese plate is $11, which is still amazing value.
