This weekend’s assignment

No complaints from me, ever, about going out to eat at Continental Divide and Bang! in the same week. But my credit card feels differently. Specifically, it said, “You swipe my ass one more time, and I’m opening up a can of whoop-ass on you.”

I said, “Really. Well, the loser store called and wants its can of whoop-ass back.”

–To which it responded, “Oh, right. Well 1997 called and wants its joke back.”

We’re not talking now, so I have to eat cheap.

Try some other spots with me. Specifically, I’m thinking of Fox’s, Moore’s Creek, 2 Sides, Big Al’s, and you’re welcome to add more. The Riverside Lunch is always packed. Dammit, let’s help out the underdogs.

haahhaha that is genuinly funny, let’s add to the assignment, poker at 204’s on Sunday where whoopass is common fair. This time around y’all will have to haul yer asses up to my digs in Northern Albemarle, or NOAL…email me if you are brave enough to wanna make it, I’ll arm wrestle the winner, (extra incentive)….

    Word up to Fox’s!

Any meal there is crazy cheap — for obvious reasons — but the burgers and “Amereican” fries hit the spot just as well as any other grease pit in the area.

I’m not sure if they do the lunch specials on the weekends, but Saigon Cafe’ is very easy on the wallet. $3.50 will get you a cup of soup, a chicken wing, an entree, and rice(the taste of their food waaay surpasses what you pay for it). If you’re going for dinner, get the Tofu Country Style, or She’ King Beef — trust me.

Oh, and Wendy’s now ranks #1 in $1 Double Cheeseburgers(I think they call it the “Slammer” or something)… sorry Mickeydees.

    Ditto on Fox’s.
We call in an order nearly every day at my office. The sausage, egg, & cheese sandwich and the sausage gravy have pulled me through many a hangover. Their burgers are pretty solid too. The best part is, I can almost always pay for it with the 3 or 4 dollars left crammed in my pockets from the night before.

Another favorite secret spot of mine is the Coastal station on the corner of Cherry Ave & 9th St. It’s a bit sketchy at times, but the fried chicken is unreal. I’d say it’s easily better than Wayside.

I’ve been to Fox’s, Moore’s Creek and Two-Sides. They’re all grass roots-solid! If you’re around Belmont, try Beer Run. That place is fantastic.

Since when is Riverside an “underdog?” I’ve been eating there since I was in diapers and it was behind the CVS on Long Street.

mc–Riverside & Big Al’s are both on East High Street, almost across from each other. Al’s on the right and Riverside sits on the left as you come down the hill (away from downtown and the MJ Hospital) toward the 250 bypass. May I also suggest Jack-n-Jill’s, which is nearby before you get to Big Al’s. If you’re into dogs (hot dogs, that is, not canines), get the foot long “all the way” at Jack-n-Jill’s. Awesome! I don’t have the energy to direct you to 2 Sides and Moores Creek . . . somewhat complicated because every street in C’ville has at least two names, and there are 15 Carlton Roads, Avenues, Boulevards, etc.

2 sides is on Carlton Road before it turns into Meade (by the railroad tracks, in the same shopping center as Cville Market, right up from Beer Run): take Market east towards river, take right on Meade at light. To get to Moore’s Creek, continue on this road towards Rte. 20 until taking a left on Monticello right before you get to the stoplight. Follow this road down - Moore’s Creek is on the left at the bottom of the hill (you can see it from Rte. 20, Monticello just makes a big loop here.

I suggest we start a new service for Cville newbies, where we team them up with seasoned cville’ers (Cvillains) so they can be shuttled around to the “must-go” establishments in town. May I suggest the name the NSA?….(Newbie-Shuttle-Aroundtown)

That is a great idea..should we organize a group of evanglisits or community consultants or something like that?

Two Sides is really very good. Their burgers are excellent, as is their breakfast. Pretty cheap too. The bar side seems to be sealed off enough to not allow infiltrating smoke into the dining area. The new owners are working hard to rid the place of the reputation of whatever the predecessor place was called. Nice, friendly staff. Diner-ish menu. Good eats.

as a vegetarian, one of my favorite cheap places for grub is tubby’s. and, of course, bodo’s.
    oh, and my kitchen.

2o4- there were quite a few specimens of younger folk at LA last night. it made dropping the f-bombs that much more fun!

there was also a keg of satan’s pony. i was in heaven. also, why didn’t anyone tell me how much fun trees on fire (the band, not the thing itself, though i guess that could be cool) are?

to stay more on topic: sam’s kitchen has a pretty decent list of breakfast specials, and the people who work there are hilarious. their omelets are fabulous, and it’s not quite as insane as the tavern across the street.

For the love of god, go to Fabio’s if you are in the E. High St. neighborhood anyway. I won’t dig on the other joints mentioned, but for the sake of all that is decent and Neapolitan Italian-speaking in this world, go to Fabio’s! It’s crowded at lunch, but you can always get in or order out. E. High at Willow St.

so this doesn’t really fit the description of a *weekend* assignment, but if you need a cheap weekday lunch spot, the carving board cafe on 29 north is amazing. their sandwiches are out of this world, and the most expensive one — a yummy crab melt with tomato and provolone cheese — is less than $6 i think. the gorgonzola & pear salad is my personal fave for $5. sadly, they’re only open during the week for lunch…

Yeah, LA was fun last night (and I saw quite a few cvillains there). When I found out they had a keg of Satan’s Pony I almost creamed my pants. Trees On Fire are fucking awesome. Chill music, great harmonies, original sound. Definitely a great time.

towniegownie, I was suggesting Riverside gets too much attention, so we should help the other guys. Totally with you.

Lolo, I’m a big Bluegrass fan. Here’s proof.

And hi new people! You’re super.

Now that I’m thinking about it, and drinking a lot of wine, are we going to open up the can of worms (as oppposed to whoop-ass) about why Bluegrass and Big Al’s can not be in the same category? Like “majority of diners can not own a C.K. Bradley accessory or subscribe to the Orvis catalog”? I had the “what makes a dive a dive” conversation last night, and it’s SO ambiguous. Yupster’s better at this. BITCH WHERE YOU AT.

    unfortunately, tubby’s isn’t open weekends…or mondays…or nights… but at lunchtime it’s fabulous. i love the orange sub-shop booths.
all those places on e. high st. are great–fabio’s, riverside, & tubby’s–except for big al’s. ugh, it’s so greasy & dirty & smoky.
