UVA Credit Union Forgets to Renew Its Website?

Check out www.uvacreditunion.org, the online banking portal for UVA’s credit union. It’s down. The site is currently parked by Network Solutions (huge domain registar). This is not good. This means, that potentially, UVA’s credit union has lost access to its domain address. I wonder who the new owner is.

An astute reader called to ask about the problem. The response was “We’re not sure.” Thanks for the help! What’s going on?

I’m sure of one thing. If they forgot to renew their domain and it’s owned by some foreign group with malicious intent there are huge security issues, huge embarrassment issues and more. Keep checking back as this story unfolds.

Would you switch banks if this happened to you?  Does this make you feel comfortable as a customer?

Thanks for the tip! Let us know if you want credit!

They’ll have time to pay up and fix this. This same thing actually happened to Microsoft (I believe it was one of the Hotmail/Passport domain names) a few years back.

This isn’t a security issue, unless they are stupid enough to let the registration totally lapse. They’ll just be out for 48 hours or so after they renew the name and the DNS propagates.

12 to 24 hours in more common these days. Might refresh about noon. Depends on your own provider too, Embarq, Comcast, etc.

Yeah, it’s certainly faster than it used to be.

I would imagine the unemployment ranks grew a tiny bit today. That’s such a huge gaffe, due to the number of people who will think “the credit union is hax0red!” and take their money elsewhere.

And given the incompetence of their IT department, that doesn’t necessarily sound like a bad idea.

I seem to recall our local NBC affiliate being slow to jump on the internet bandwagon, for a few years entering either their call letters ‘WVIR’ or ‘NBC29′ (I don’t remember which) after “www.” would lead you straight to a porn site. Seems like they got around to fixing that at some point.
I once registered ‘bankofamericascrewedme.com’ after Bank of America.. well,.. screwed me. I let it lapse so I could renew it with a cheaper site, but guess who scooped it up? There’s something not right about that…

I’m glad I made my loan payment this weekend rather than waiting. I’m sure they wouldn’t have let me use the excuse that their site was down for my payment being late.

I understand that this isn’t a security issue. It is however an incompetence issue and that bothers me greatly.

The DNS is flapping a bit. I got it to work by going to http://www.uvacreditunion.COM first, got properly redirected to the HTTPS site https://www.uvacreditunion.ORG/ which was the real site, but later .COM was bad, yet https://www.uvacreditunion.org was still good, http .org was bad, etc. I’m not going to login with it in that state.

Shen… drunken domain name purchasing (DDNP) is a dangerous sport. Also drunken Ebaying… I started receiving all these parcels a couple of years back, and when I tracked it all down, the bids were all at around 3am for the most fucked up collection of stuff. Its bad.

Floozy, icenine should introduce your dog to her friend who did the poop study. They could share ice cream cones in the park.

icenine, I hope your friend’s contribution to the world of medicine has saved lives. I take back anything I said about my consultation being traumatic. Compared to consuming my own feces, meeting with the doctor was an all-expenses paid trip to Vegas.

Don’t pick B of A. I’d have been better off throwing myself in front of a bus (though the worst fucker from my experience is now at Virginia National, which would have been the bank I’d have recommended if they hadn’t hired him)
    maybe BB&T?

No, nanigans, I only drank water at poker, so no regrets there. No sweat Parlie, I need them to not go out of business till I can take ‘em for all I can get. Personally I like the idea of banking locally, but when Virginia National decided to hire one of the biggest retards I’ve ever met and put him in a position of responsibility, they forced me to look elsewhere.

Yo, do NOT post a link to anything with the words “2 girls 1 cup” on the page, even if it’s Muppets. I just scared my neighbors to death with a high-pitched scream and broke my mouse trying to click away. Despite my love of the occasional taste of outer asshole, homegirl don’t push in that far.

    Another headline suggestion:
    UVA CCU URL MIA

Why’s the error page say “Last updated on Jan 15 2008″? Did their updating of it cause the problem?
