Martin Luther King Day represents an important holiday for us all. For some it means time off work. For others, you still have to work. For all, it’s a call to action. We are taking it easy at the cVillain headquarters, but still getting some stuff done.
I’m curious how do holiday’s like today fit into your workplace? Does your workplace honor the holiday? Should they?
Do you work on Martin Luther King Day?

I never got to vote on this, but it showed me the answer anyway. Is someone using my login?
We turned on IP tracking for polls, so someone from your work or home already voted.
well that’s not fair
boo! i voted yes but the server timed out and i can’t vote again.
to keep on topic, i work for the state, so nothing special is done for the holiday except holiday pay for full-time employees (which i’m not). UVA isn’t holding classes today, which is a nice aberration - kinda makes up for having to go to class on labor day - but all it means for me is that i’m doing massive amounts of laundry and catching up on the pile of reading in front of me. yeehaw!
I will work til I run out of work and then take the comp leave.
Hey! Im cured!
@gobbler: i’m using your login. suck it.
Who gets days off, honestly?! Maybe I could get days off, but I have a workaholic problem. I need some sort of Worker AA. I am guessing no one else will be joining?
I’ll start it.
Activities in WAA: Drinking, partying and socializing.
Meetings: Every Tuesday at South Street.
Maybe we can partner with the AA, to solve our WAA induced A.
Well, the first step is admiting you have a problem…
I can be the counselor. I can teach you all to slack like there’s no tomorrow, and Ive been in enough therapy to have all the patterns down pat.
“Well, It looks like our hour is up, but I think we made some real progress. Lets explore this a little deeper next week. You can leave your check with becky at the front desk.”
Does taking care of the kids count as work? If so, I want to lodge a complaint because I never get any holidays off. Hmm, maybe I should find a job so I can have a holiday from home.
today is an official holiday for uva’s academic division. of course, that only means so much, a lot of people still have to work, or come in regardless. my boss has a hard time remembering what day it is, never mind when there’s a holiday. so here i am. but in protest, i’m not doing much.
What an utterly touching way to remember this great man. Really, I’m moved by your sensitivity and awareness. This blog post has really given me a deeper perspective on the meaning of MLK’s life. Thank you so much for this insight.
@Cathy: I assume this is sarcasm which means you forgot to put the *rolls-eyes* in your post. Here, I will show you:
As you can see, this was obviously an attempt to seriously talk about MLK’s life given the fact that we mentioned nothing about his life. *rolls-eyes*
Now, if you want us to remember him in a specific way, there is an open invitation to publish your thoughts in a post or in comments on this blog. I’m sure we would welcome the education.
Im gonna take a bullet for you thor….
Combine this topic (MLK) and the one above (icecream) and what do you get?

/I know, I know, Im going to hell. Please dont hurt me Cathy.
I, for one, am offended on behalf of grammar prescriptivists everywhere.
Lords of Umbrage assemble!!!
jesus, byo. you’re killing me smalls!
At least we don’t have to deal with Lee-Jackson-King Day anymore. Only in Virginia….. I had to google it to get the specifics:

errr….the post wasn’t about MLK, it was about getting the day off? but let’s all get offended.
and I had to work today because holidays are essentially meaningless when it comes to reality.
shenanigans: objectively offended by people being offended.
you’re offending me for pointing out that I’m offended by the offended
That Lee Jackson King Day bullshite was ludicrous. They only changed it a few years ago…nothing like celebrating a civil rights activist on the same day as two Confederate generals…focking lame. It was a total slap in the face to MLK’s memory.
[…] We learn that most of us work on Martin Luther King Day [quasi-holiday] […]
