The yellow snow you’ll actually eat…

Speaking of snow (which i LOVE), guess what snow-like summer treat is coming to the corner (okay, I know it’s a stretch)… Rita’s Water Ice! It’s going in the old tropical smoothie cafe space on University, but I didn’t notice if the sign had an approximate open date as I was trying not to hit too many pedestrians while driving home last night.

I lived off this stuff growing up in NJ, and while this is no haute cuisine, there’s something so wonderful about frozen fruit/sugar slush on a hot day (think 7-11 slurpee but the lemon has wonderful bits of zest in it and is actually made from, well, lemons). Their custard is awesome and I recommend getting a gelati (custatrd and water ice layered parfait-style). The mango-vanilla combo is a particular favorite!

In the meanwhile, get a cup of hot cocoa to tide you over until we hit more balmy days.

I noticed this last night walking back to my car. I hugged the sign I was so happy. I missed the approx. opening date. When is it?

Mmmmm… they have frozen custard too! Why Kohr Brothers never opened a place on the corner is beyond me. I predict this will be one of the more successful business openings of ‘08, and they’ll have a long line at night ala Carl’s of F’burg.

i walk by there pretty much every day and haven’t noticed an opening date on the sign. of course, lately, i’ve had my whole face buried in my scarf so that could have something to do with it…

h-d, I’m from Fredericksburg, and Carl’s is crazy-popular! I saw it without a line once in the 16 years I lived there. Anyway, sno-cones were huge in Texas… should I be embarrassed that I ordered sug-free ones? Except, omigosh, birthday cake mixed with pineapple. I’d eat them more but sensitive teeth are a beeotch.

are you kidding? winter is totally the best time to eat frozen treats. it makes you feel warmer!

speaking of warmer, hot cocoa + peppermint schnapps = big fun.

I don’t hang out in Fredricksburg much, but is that the place across the street from the Greyhound station?

Yes, anonymous. Carl’s is right by the Greyhound station.

Oooh, I can’t wait to see how locals pronounce “gelati”.

lys- this is the best news ive gotten this month if not all winter. i encourage everyone to try the soft pretzel sticks dipped in cherry gelati. like fries in a frosty, but oh-so much better. this is yet more proof that cville is basically a northern town.

ACTUALLY– carl’s USED to be by the bus station, but the bus station has apparently changed locations. now carl’s is just by the ghetto.

upstart– i am from the fredericksburg area, too.
