C-Ville reports that a former employee of Milan is suing its owners for taking his tips as well as failing to pay overtime. OOOPs.
In the article, Tim Freilich explains:
Charlottesville diners have the reasonable expectation that when we leave a tip for our server, the server is going to get it. Many workers in the service industry work long, thankless hours, and we need to make sure they are at least being properly compensated for their efforts.

sigh….time to find another favorite indian restaurant. Or not? innocent until proven guilty, right?
To tie together two threads:
What is the proper tip if you buy two drinks with cash over the course of 30 minutes, if that bartender’s tips are going to be stolen by his boss?
SS…LOL
silm, flooze, open thread?
I’d like to know the reasons behind the confiscation of the tips. If they were collected to be dispersed evenly among all the staff, I have less objection to it. Especially if that was declared at the hiring. If the owner was just pocketing the tips… he is a very bad man.
Would this have anything to do with the friendly cheerful service at Milan, I wonder?
mmm… i don’t think any servers get paid overtime. most get paid a whopping 2.13/hr. (plus tips-tipout) but certainly no overtime.
[…] Careful about those tips [your employer may steal them] […]
