Daily Progress’ Papa Lays the Smackdown on BookofJoe.com

Daily Progress’ holding company, Media General issued a “cease and desist” letter to BookofJoe.com.

Media General explains that BookofJoe must immediately remove all licensed content from its website. The letter explains that BookofJoe “cut and pastes” articles directly into its blog and that is a violation of copyright and terms of service.

What do you think? Will we (or another local blogger) be next? Are these rules even well defined? I’m sure BookofJoe referenced DailyProgress.

My thoughts on this are simple. Would Daily Progress prefer local bloggers to summarize articles and not link back to their site or do they want to be open with their content? Will the editors at Daily Progress use this as a story (haha, no)? How much traffic do you think BookofJoe is sending to Daily Progress? I know the DP writers read this site; but they probably can’t comment on anything which sucks.

(remember we keep all identities a secret!)

If I have to spell out the humor here then there is none.

    Carry on.

Don’t news sources quote each other all the time? As long as the guy is giving credit to the Daily Regress I don’t see the problem. He’s also linking back to them? What are they complaining about?

Thor–Yo cut and pasted your content into a post, perhaps in violation of CVillain copyright rules, much as the bookofjoe was doing with Progress content. It took me a minute to get it, but now I think Yo was quite clever. My description of the humor, however, was not very funny. Because humor, like a frog, can be dissected . . . but they both die in the process.

Thor, ‘yo cut and pasted your original content without giving you credit, in a thread about doing exactly that, and it went right over your head. I suggest legal action. Why don’t you cut and paste Media General’s cease and desist letter onto Spicy Bear letterhead, and…

I’ve seen where he has posted copy lifted from other sites and I always assumed it was one of those things that people looked the other way on because most bloggers, including Joe, give credit and link back to the original.

there’s a big difference between fair use and quoting the entire article. If another website stole Spicy Bear’s content (not just a blurb and linked back to them, but the entire article), I can’t imagine they’d be happy.

Yes, this textbook copyright law - I would cut and paste the textbook stating this, but I don’t want to get into trouble.

A textbook? Surely its ok to make a copy, right?

I don’t see a terms of use on this page, there is a copyright for cvillain though… but does that count if it’s being used on the same blog? Clearly I am no expert in copyright law.

bookofjoe in the event of linking probably could be given credit for a lot of hits to the DP’s site. And something that just seems silly is that it seems that the infringements are few and far between. The earliest article in question being in May of 2006 (written up on bookofjoe in June 2006 — bookofjoe also made sure to say that it was from DP)… Shouldn’t they have gotten their acts together sooner?

… and yes I know, once again I probably am not with the program. Damn my lack of high speed internet.

    @12 You said it. (hint)

@1 No because there isn’t much dead tree space left.
I tried to find hits from BOJ to us and couldn’t find any, probably cause they didn’t need to click the link to read the rest of the article. (hint)
We probably aren’t supposed to talk about it but they don’t pay me enough to not speak my mind.

@4 Just to set the record straight, Joe was asked politely not to copy and paste articles onto his website before the C&D was crafted. I didn’t enjoy it, but I need to protect our content, cause well, it pays my salary.

Joe has posted the email exchange on his blog if you care to read it. Myself and others at the paper love blogs, and yes we read lots of blogs.

I want to keep producing videos of cool robotic instruments, student film projects, and banjo makers (coming soon). If people don’t go to DP.com to view those things, my position will be eliminated. It’s pretty simple.

On a different note, KIKI’s grapefruit basil limeade will be sorely missed. Let me know if it pops up someplace else!

Also wouldn’t mind hearing your thoughts on posting links to articles like in the Van Halen thread. If “facts” are getting in the way of your good story I won’t do it anymore.

I say post your links. DP is reliable, obviously.

And thanks for weighing in on the traffic stuff. BookofJoe needs to reference his sources; that’s the only fair thing to do!
