I have fond memories of improvisation drills in drama classes, in my younger years– back when improv was for fun and not something you’re forced to do every time someone recognizes you in this city and you have no idea how you met them or what their name is. “Hey… you! I’m doing great! How are you doing?”
At this point in my life, I’d rather watch it than do it. And I’ve learned that improv is hard, and the people who are good at it make it look really easy.
Amuse-Bouche Improv is a UVA group that performs on Grounds. The next show is February 8 at 8pm for $5 in the auditorium of the Chemistry building.
Members have studied at the Second City, ComedySportz, and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. I’d give one of my imaginary wings to visit the Second City in Chicago, actually. I’m content to watch other people make stuff up and give it some spin on a Friday night, for once.

Stupid I know. I just kinda improvised it.
Ha! I like it!
Lilith, absolutely do go to Second City in Chicago. I’ve been twice. They have mad improve skillz! Just call for reservations, next time you’re going to be up there. They will seat you at a table with other people, in all likelihood. Since I know you don’t mind going out on your own and taking your chances, you might meet some cool people!
Duh. Improv. Not improve. They really don’t have room for much improvement!
Keep your wings, you’re in luck! The Second City comes to you!:

Thats if Richmond isn’t too far away.
I remember going to see the Second City folks in Chicago in, oh hell, 1987 I think. When they asked for improv ideas from the audience I suggested “A Kathy Rigby Commercial”; they didn’t run with that idea that night, sadly. They also had a sketch about a Lamaze class. I still laugh about the young concerned pregnant women asking the wise teacher about what childbirth was really like: the teacher got a thoughtful expression on her face for a moment, then looked the young girl in the eye and said “It’s like shitting a watermelon.”
Funniest line of the night.
I had friends performing at the Improv Olympic, which is right down the street from Second City (and is really it’s forefather). Great times. Watching people who really know what their doing is incredible. They do long form improv and really layer the jokes, whereas around here you tend to see a lot of gimmicky sketches. I can’t speak for Amuse-Busch, since I haven’t seen them, although I know several of them personally and they are a hillarious bunch.
The only improv I’m familiar with is instrumental (read: music) and conversational. I can’t remember names anyway, so there are always slightly awkward moments with other C-Ville folks when I don’t remember how I know them…especially when they remember a lot about me.
