I’d give away my first-born to see ________________ do a show in Charlottesville

[written by indie dork]

Fill in the blank. Which 3 musicians/performers would you give anything to see here? Caveat: preferably, they should not have been here for a few years. Maybe someone with connections could make this happen? If there is consensus, maybe we could pool some money and get a local club to have a small cvillain show?

Ok, I lied about the last one. In reality I’d like to see AC/DC, The Darkness, Aerosmith, Tenacious D, Velvet Revolver (and still the Crue and Zepplin). My out of left field choice is Norah Jones. I want her to have my babies.

A handful of the folks listed above have played here in the last few years. Bob Mould was at Gravity Lounge not more than 2 months ago with Brendan Canty from Fugazi (unfortunately I missed it but I heard it was awesome - they did a bunch of Husker Du and Sugar songs too). Sebastian Bach played at Trax a handful of years ago and my friend Wendy got to hang out with him (re: babysit) all day!

It was almost like something out of Spinal Tap as a couple of roadies lead him to the mike, he sways there for about 10 seconds as the crowd simultaneouly screams and holds their breath. He does the slurred “1,2,3,4″ and the band is off and running with “If I Should Fall From Grace with God”. Band was great, carried Shane through an unbelievable show. Would have been great to see him way back in the 80s when he was somewhat coherent.

At one point during the night I was actually naming off tracks they were playing and Cut Chemist looked up at me and gave me the reassuring nod of - OK this guy knows what’s up. Kid Koala opening for them was amazing as well. I had the opportunity to open for him when he played Satellite last year but there were some communications issues so it never happened. I feel bad for Shadow and Cut Chemist in a way. Two legends having to play for such a wack crowd who seemed like they weren’t appreciative of something that obviously took months if not years to put together and came out so spectacular and seamless. Kind of sucked in that aspect. All in all though it was a great show for the ones who truly appreciated it.

Maybe you all are going to different shows that I do because I can only remember one show that was thinly attended (Zappa’s band). I’m so grateful he seems to like the same music as I do. I’m pretty confident that The Jeff will have some great shows whenever it opens.

The CD is pretty, er, um, cerebral. Definitely nowhere near as funky as Brainfreeze or even Product Placement, but it is an interesting document of turntable layering; some really obscure tracks (along with some well-known ones) get thrown into the mix. They also attempt to build a few De La Soul tracks from the ground up using samples, which is pretty neat. I have to admit that seeing the set performed live with video accompaniment went a long way towards making the CD make more sense. Also, the CD has some great if impractical packaging.

    2. Music for the sake of music. They’re such genius musicians that we’re not offended when they call us “Charlotte.” Is it genii?
    3. Are you on what I’m on? It’s a scene. Showcase for a kinda famous DJ who’s self-conscious about his kinda-famiosity. Understated and overstated meet here.

    * 4. See: Justin Timberlake. We call that a waste of money, not a concert.

@UVaLaGrape - I have to respectfully disagree with you on the count that non-white and non-rock audiences are being ignored. For a town of Charlottesville’s size, we get a LOT of shows, and more than a few that have crossover appeal. And you have to remember we’re close enough to a couple of major urban areas (RVA, WDC) that it’s not cost-effective for a lot of touring acts to come here anyway. Add in the fact that most popular hip-hop/r&b/soul acts don’t really tour that much to begin with, and you’re left competing for a pieces of a pretty small pie. Look at any major touring urban artist - they are not generally playing towns with 40,000 people in them. If anything, I think the University has been slack in getting pop acts to come - most bands will play at a college in a heartbeat since they can charge outrageous guarantees (the students are picking up the tab anyway). If there’s one problem with concerts here, it’s that they’re generally overpriced, which might be a factor in keeping certain acts away.

If Justin Timberlake and Pink can stop here, anyone on earth can stop here. that’s no exagerration, don’t you think? JT is our generation’s Michael Jackson. The current pince of pop. Number one of the number one musical acts in terms of popularity.

So that means that’s all that’s needed is the asking and the cash. And those 2 things are controlled by the venue owners and programmers. Take it from a (half) Black Charlottesvillian: the white business class of Charlottesville neither understands nor wants the business of Black Charlottesville/central Va. We are 20% of Charlottesville and Albemarle, but the average White small business owner just doesn’t get how to tap into that market and doesn’t care. So…the chains get our money because they’re better at marketing to us than some retired lawyer who opens a restaurant in the middle of a Black neighborhood yet somehow gets no Black customers.

This town is so segregated that white adults who move here don’t even notice it. Kids do, that’s for sure. But…that’s a whole other story.

  162. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:22 pmUva LaGrape said:

It ain’t about Sharon Jones. I have no doubt that she is a strong and righteous sister who paid her dues to gain the current blurb of mainstream popularity she’s receiving.

But she’s receiving that popularity from white hipsters, not the black community. It’s not about Sharon. She is an artist who is free to do what she wants. It’s about the local venue owners and programmers who don’t get the simplest things about appealling to the black community. Black people in this town listen to gospel, R&B and Hiphop. That is a generalization you can put cold hard cash down on. But then you got venue managers programming blues and jazz and thinking they’ve done their part to serve the black community.

Jill Scott’s on tour. Get her.
Patti Labelle’s on a gospel tour. Get her.
Boyz 2 Men are on tour. Get ‘em!

  163. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:51 pmbaconfat said:

@UVaLaGrape - I think you have some valid arguments about promoters/programmers here, but you have to face the reality about how urban artists tour - they don’t typically play smaller markets. I looked at every stop on Jill Scott’s tour - there are nothing but giant 100,000+ cities on there. And where’s she going to play in town? The Paramount is probably way too small (and I’m sure with her guarantee the tickets would have to be upwards of $100 for anyone to make money), and JPJ is probably way too big (nobody wants to play to 3,000 people in a 18,000+ room). The main thing is that Cville doesn’t have a good room that fits between 1,500 and 15,000 people (UHall doesn’t count). Other factors to consider include high insurance costs for hip-hop acts and the fact that most gospel shows are probably going to have to be non-alcoholic (a sure-fire way NOT to make money).
Also, Boyz II Men are touring in Europe right now (no US dates scheduled) and Patti LaBelle only has one show scheduled for the next 6 months. Chris Brown is playing Hawaii and Denmark.
As far as your JT argument goes - JPJ can only book acts that it knows will sell a boatload of tickets. Justin has a proven track record dating back several years, and he is the biggest guy out there right now - he could sell out in just about any town, anywhere. Someone newer, even with a chart-topping album, might have a harder time doing so, and JPJ can’t afford to take chances in a small market like this. Last year was very bad for the touring industry, so look for conservatism to continue in the future.

Oh for Christ (whoops) sakes..I am never hip to be square enough to ever be on the “cutting edge” of whatever y’all are talking about. I started wearing leggings 4 years after it was “in”…there was that whole headband fiasco. Dayglo Bellbottoms…did it. Back when it was truly in fashion. Plus my mom sent me to this very odd SPCA Christian camp where we sang a lot of Puff the Magic Dragon and also a smattering of dogmatic Michael rowed the boat ashore Indoctrination by reformed hippies. Can I say that? Ya know what I can..two years of accidental celibacy..I think I get a pass. Turns out that makes you cynical and cranky. Who knew. I also got kicked in the shin by a horse that year. I believe I was 9. Should have been telling for the trajectory of my life.

    Floyd…please
    Zep
    Petty

    That’s it.

I’m always fashionably late to the party.

some.dude: Ozomatli is great live. I saw ‘em years ago at a Warped Tour in DC. Sadly, the coolness of my claim is dulled by the fact that, as I entered RFK for the show, my mom said, “Hey, look for a band called Ozomatli. I heard about ‘em on NPR!” and that’s why I saw ‘em.

    Still: very, very awesome show.

JPJ I consider more of a regional venue than a local one. Its competition is more Nissan Pavilion or Richmond Coliseum than Gravity Lounge. It pulls audience from at least a hundred-mile radius. So while Cville may not be a big city, neither are many of the regional arenas that are housed in towns mainstream America has never heard of (like Bristow or Vienna). I agree that we are a small city that’s not a suburb of a big one, but…we’ve proved that if everything is done right, our town’s big venues can sell out.

They’ve got Lynyrd Skynyrd coming in May. Lynyrd Funkin Skynyrd, dude. Their last hit was before I was born, and you’re gonna tell me they try to book acts that “it” knows will sell a boatload. There is no “it.” There is a group of locally-residing humans that make these programming decisions. If it’s purely about selling a boatload of tickets, there’s no way that Lynyrd Skynyrd was the top available act in May.

Jill Scott would pull just as many or more sales as Lynyrd Skynyrd. But JPJ for some reason feels like overserving the classic rock crowd and underserving the R&B crowd. Bring back OutKast.

I have to give it up to the Paramount, though. They were still in construction when I went to college, so I’m only just discovering them. But I feel like they do a good job of booking acts that appeal to grown black folks (thought not the kids), like Maya Angelou, DL Hughley and The Temptations. Looking at their schedule, I see they’ve had Cosby, Whoopi. They’re alright in my book!

Great article from The Hook about our glut of venues:
    http://www.readthehook.com/stories/2007/10/25/Cover-Eoverload-E.rtf.aspx

    Fun capacity facts:
    Scott Stadium 60,000
    JPJ 16,000
    Pavilion 3500
    MLK 1200
    Paramount 1000
    Old Cabell 850
    Jefferson 800
    PVCC 500

Regarding ticket prices: There’s nothing that can be done on a wide level. Prices are going up and that’s that. Professional venues look at every price schematic possible when deciding ticket prices. But the fact is that the market will bear $100 ticket prices. Concerts are for the upper middle class. Duh. Do Pink t-shirts really cost so much to make they must charge me $35? No. Concerts are all about the status of being able to say “I went to see _________. Did you?”

But on a guerrilla level, there’s always ways into local shows. Let’s start a thread about how we’ve gotten into this or that concert free.

Veering back towards bands that might actually come, I’d love to see:
    The Budos Band
Quantic / and or his Soul Orchestra
I think both sell out Satellite.

In February Boyz 2 Men are going to be in California, Missouri and Illinois. Patti Labelle is going to be in Chicago and Raleigh in March. Jill Scott is going to do 8 gigs in DC, Maryland, VA and North Carolina in the next few months. Sharon Jones is playing 300 to 3000 seat venues.

The specific artists don’t matter. What matters is that there’s no excuse for such a lack of bookings that appeal to black audiences in a town with such a bounty of venues.
