Definitely plan to do some winetasting this evening. But my REAL concern is what is going on around here (next) Fat Tuesday. The only thing I’ve heard about is a jazz group at Fellini’s. Is there any other Mardi Gras mayhem in town? Maybe a South Lousiana style Zydeco band? Anyone know? Please share.
    EYE-EEEE!
(BTW- Ignore the “please” and thanks” above — being a Saints fan, I’m normally quite rude.)

I freakin’ love domokun’s B’yo! Awesome poster. Of course, I can’t look at something like that, without being reminded of this:

I always thought those little monsters were made up for that kitten picture. I didn’t realize there was a whole history of them with a tv show and all. I kind of preferred just thinking of them as God’s kitten killing muscle.

Tonight is my last night in the world of bartending. I will be pouring heavily to numb the sadness of my departure. Swing by mcgrady’s for happy hour to get one last look at the two time “sexiest bartender in the world” award winner.

I prefer to think of domokuns that way, too, Tim. But I also really like how they can look cute, cuddly and pissed off, all at the same time. Come to think of it, I could use something with that sort of attitude to stand guard, in my office. “Why, yes. Do come in. But I might have to kill you.”

Don’t forget the Fred Frith concert tomorrow at Old Cabel Hall!!
If you enjoyed the month of sound at the Bridge or the movie “Step Across the Border” then you will certainly enjoy the master himself!

  13. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:01 pmChartreuse said:

Now, don’t forget about Fred Frith on Saturday at Old Cabel Hall at UVa.

This would be down the alley of those folks that enjoyed the recent avant-garde music offerings at the Bridge. You don’t get much closer to NY underground/avant-garde than this… he’s the master.

Where’s the Groundhog’s Day party for tomorrow night?

  15. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:18 pmcolfer said:

Fred Frith is a wild man. I saw him before you were a twinkling perhaps, but he’s still around, eh, and I’m betting has aged better musically than Eno & Ferry. He was much more out there. Worked with Fripp and frippertronics and Eno and Manzanera and that tribe.

  16. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:19 pmbaconfat said:

@Chartreuse - I thought John Zorn was the master.

@baconfat– I stand corrected. But after all, he won’t be the one in our hallowed ‘ville this weekend. :)

@16: like I said, they really are between 5 and 8. All definitely start by 5:30. I think they all die down around 7:30, but there are hanger-onners.

  20. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:28 pmbaconfat said:

Also, Juno = overrated. I think it’s an indicator as to how much the quality of American film has slipped over the past few years when a decent, slightly quirky movie with an inoffensive soundtrack (ie, one that doesn’t feature Aerosmith, some lame 80’s hit, or a member of Nickelback) gets lubricated orally by critics and fans as much as this one has. Just because it’s not Daddy Day Camp or PS I Love You doesn’t make it super-awesome. The movie was cute; let’s move on.

  21. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:28 pmlilith said:

Just like on cVillain.com at 12:30 at night. [Looking around with the “who, me?” shrug.]

  22. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:37 pmlilith said:

baconfat, I think you may take for granted how shocking it is to all but the youngish liberal demographic. For a movie that highlights an unpopular perspective, of tolerance with a twinge of salvation of teen pregnancy, and such a sour view of marriage, it’s proving to be popular and not just preaching to the choir. I mean, the only people who see Michael Moore movies these days are people who agree with him and don’t object to flagrant abuse of editing. I think people are seeing Juno who would have a serious moral issue with its slant.

I thought juno was a great movie, and i mean that in the way where it was great because i actually enjoyed a movie for a change and wasn’t mad it cost 9 dollars. It almost made me feel like gettin knocked up.

  24. 01 Feb 2008 at 3:40 pmChad Day said:

Ditto on the juno love. It’s obviously not going to be a Godfather/Shawshank type movie, but since we only get those type of classics once every 5 years at best, I’ll take simply ‘very good’ and be more than happy with it.

Juno was excellent, but I don’t think it was quite Best Picture nom worthy. Its good to see Michael Cera in anything though, and Jason Bateman for that matter. I miss Arrested Development:(

Movies I am trying to see this weekend (it’s a busy one): There Will Be Blood and Rambo.

    I can recommend:
    There Will be Blood
    No Country for Old Men
    Juno
    Cloverfield
    in that order
Tim, if you see Rambo, please let us know how bad it is. Based on previews and common sense, I’d probably get up and leave to catch the end of 2 girls 1 cup in the next theater.

Cloverfield is a crappy mall in Richmond.

  46. 01 Feb 2008 at 4:46 pmmc said:

cloverfield is entertaining in a way most action/thriller movies aren’t. Most importantly, they keep it really short and constantly in motion so you don’t get tired of it.

Juno is a cute little movie which I enjoyed and I can’t at all figure out why it is nominated for best picture. I understood Little Miss Sunshine, as a long shot, but Juno? Is the morality of a non-promiscuous girl doing the “right” thing important enough to have this quirky comedy compete against the complete mastery of There Will Be Blood?

  47. 01 Feb 2008 at 4:50 pmlilith said:

The art design in Judo is excellent. Also, the soundtrack. Acting.

  48. 01 Feb 2008 at 4:54 pmTim said:

Ah yes, Judo. That one starred Chuck Norris right?

  49. 01 Feb 2008 at 4:55 pmThatGrrl said:

@ 44: Stanley isn’t that Cloverleaf? I used to live up Midlothian Turnpike from there (the cloverleaf to which it refers is where Midlothian intersects with on Chippenham Parkway; or so I always presumed). When it became the gun-totin’ hood, I moved. NOT a nice area.

  50. 01 Feb 2008 at 4:57 pmmc said:

the design is good but not innovative… i believe we’ve covered Wes Anderson well in comments in the past. ditto Wes on the soundtrack. The acting is very good, mainly by the parents, but they have special awards for that.

I certainly enjoyed the movie, but Waitress covered many similar themes earlier this year, but didn’t use a lot of quirky quirky teen slang. I think the academy is trying to be hip nominating Juno for best picture. Like they’re trying to atone for snubbing Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Speaking of absurd juno slang, how come Cvillain isn’t jumping on “honest to blog?” A natural fit if ever there was.

  51. 01 Feb 2008 at 5:01 pmStanley said:

    Stanley isn’t that Cloverleaf?

D’oh! Yes, you’re correct. I used to have to do deliveries there on occasion when I worked for Sbarro. Sketchball city.

  52. 01 Feb 2008 at 5:10 pmThatGrrl said:

Easy to confuse the two, Stanley. You pretty much risk your life, on a daily basis, in both places.

Ummm, yeah, where’s The Darjeeling Limited on the list of nominees? Nowhere. For ANYTHING. Thats just wrong. In a world where Transformers can win an oscar (THREE ACTUALLY), and even Norbit has a chance at one?!? WTF academy?
