2008 SuperBowl Commercials

did anyone else notice that the guy in the amp commercial is the kid from “salute your shorts” on nickelodeon back in the day?

    It’s DONKEY LIPS! jools, you’re a genius.

trashworth, or you could, you know, not. Thank you, Thor. I appreciate reliving the magic not under the influence of microbrews, without having to go to Rupert Murdoch’s clown world of internet spam.

Wait a sec - Rupert Murdoch owns myspace? I don’t see how that jives with his otherwise fascist media empire…

I don’t use the social networking sites (except cVillain), so I’m not up on the behind-the-scenes type info.

I thought they were mostly all terrible. It’s such a bogus storyline that we’ve been fed that these commercials are some sort of high art. Jesus, the last thing this country needs is more encouragement to eat doritos and drink pepsi.

I don’t think anyone thinks of them as high art… I look for a laugh out of them, at most.

Super Bowl commercials have been on a steady decline for years, which is unfortunate, because often they’re the most entertaining part of the broadcast. At least this year’s game was engaging.

That said, the Doritos Giant Mouse commercial, the eTrade Baby/clown commercial and the Iron Man trailer were all good.

    thanks lilith!

the only commercial that made me laugh out loud was the doritos ad with the mouse jumping out of the wall. the rest were all pretty tame, i thought. i miss the bud bowl.

As a major childhood fan of the Iron Man comics, I think the movie looks like it’ll be good.

Even in hindsite, the budbowl was pretty lame. The baby commercials were really pretty funny. I think the general public has a problem determining what is clever well-timed humor. (…explaining the exixtant career of Dane Cook)

Or perhaps the commercials aren’t targeted at “internet web bloggers”. Perhaps there’s a much larger bigger target audience out there that watches the Super Bowl with a lower comedic threshold.

I was really touched by the Doritos commercial. It’s nice to see someone on a small label like Interscope really get a shot at the big time. Yarf. Watch Bill Hicks, learn, understand, become a devotee.

I liked the Thriller-dancing lizards in the Sobe commercial! Although, what in the hell Naomi Campbell had to do with it escapes me.

I also liked the pony-puppy Bud commercial. It had awww-factor.

The Audi commercial a la The Godfather was awesome. One thing that was interested about it was the lack of a mention of the drivetrain. Everything I’ve heard up to this point was that the new R8 would be a V12 TDI.

I guess there could be more than one powerplant as an option.. but for a super car, what’s the point?

jools is a genius. especially since her favorite commercial was the doritos giant mouse commercial. the fedex pigeons commercial was also fairly funny, although really only smile funny, not laugh out loud funny.

there were also a few commercials that made me throw up a little inside my mouth they were so bad.

Donk, Audi showed a concept R8 at Geneva with the v12 biturbo diesel from their le mans race car. the production car has either a v8 or the Lamorghini v10 (Audi owns Lambo).

for what it’s worth, the diesel race car engine is the quietest, cleanest, most powerful race engine i’ve ever seen live. the tires make more noise against the track than the engine makes and it produces over 1000 lb/ft of torque.

    sorry for the geek-out.

indeed he does. it’s also in the garage shot where he announces that he can fly (along with a smokin’ Cobra, a Saleen and a Tesla).

Sounds like a fine idea to me. If ya’ll turn your own wrenches, I’d be more than happy to plan some shop days. I’ve got enough tools to run a full garage, and I’m planning to rebuild a transmission and a top end in one of my cars this summer. Air tools, what what?

    Oy:
I can’t say I’ve been much of an F1 fan in the past, but you’ll find my Jumbotron on SpeedVision surprisingly often. Without NFL on Sundays, I should have some open screen time. Does Speed network have an HD channel yet?

  27. 05 Feb 2008 at 1:49 pmWingnut said:

Unfortunately, SPEED’s HD broadcast is not being carried in this area yet (to my knowledge). I think it’s fairly new. Mrs. Nut and I watch every F1 and MotoGP broadcast, and she tolerates my love of sports car racing (ALMS, LMS and FIA GT for the most part).

I’ll have to review the schedule to see if it’s the same this year, but last year a bunch of us watched the Sebring 12 Hours live on SPEED, immediately followed by the F1 season opener from Australia. Not a bad Saturday, really.

  28. 05 Feb 2008 at 2:02 pmWingnut said:

also…SPEED buys its F1 broadcast from whoever is set up at the local track (Italians, French, Spanish, etc) so they wouldn’t broadcast in HD unless they bought an HD feed (unlikely, as they don’t even pay to send a full commentary crew overseas for races). Fox broadcast the Indy race this year in HD, but that was the only one I saw in that format. I don’t know if they’re carrying any races this year, or if they’ll broadcast in HD or SD if they do.
