Left of Center is hosting a local food get together at Maya at 5:30 PM tomorrow (Tuesday).
Our local food economy: why it’s important to eat local, why it’s so difficult to be a farmer, and how family farms are all but illegal in Virginia today. Colin Steele and Lynsie Watkins will tell their story of creating “Perfect Flavor,” the Waynesboro ice cream company making frozen treats entirely with local, seasonal ingredients. They believe passionately in the importance of supporting local farmers, and they have faced some huge hurdles in realizing that dream. And Gail Hobbes-Paige, of Caromont Farm, will talk about her experiences as a farmer, chef, caterer, goat farmer and cheesemaker. Her broad knowledge provides rare insight into our local food economy.
Should be exciting. Food…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

ok, okay, I’ll comment on this strangely silent post: I would love to go to this, but have to work late. Anyone know if they’re going to serve some of this local ice cream? The website shows it as insanely expensive ($90 for a half gallon!) so this would be the only chance for a mere mortal to have a sample. It might be worth me taking a break from the office to taste such an elite treat.
now you have me paying attention to the ice cream thing. i sort of gave a quick glance with regret as i will be unable to attend - i often look at events i can’t participate in quickly but not deeply so i won’t be thinking of what i’m missing.
anyhow- what local seasonal ice cream flavors can you think of?
I’m somewhere around brussel sprouts, kale and apples.
I think I’m going to an elitist ice-cream tasting Tuesday night. Otherwise, I would love to be there.
