This news story freaked me out. A middle school student whose name is unreleased hid a gun in his locker in middle school.
The Daily Progress reported:
Police would not say if the pistol was loaded or if any ammunition was found. Authorities also declined to say where the student obtained the weapon, though they did say that the student is not being charged with stealing it. Police and school officials refused to say when or where the gun was first noticed Friday.
“The details of all this, we’re kind of holding off on releasing all of it,†said Lt. Todd Hopwood, an Albemarle County police spokesman.
Police do not want to jeopardize the investigation by releasing too many details, he added.

Highlights include:
We encourage you to discuss this incident with your child at home to provide reassurance that their safety is of paramount importance to the school staff. We have a safety plan in place and regularly practice drills to be prepared for any incident. It also is important to emphasize your child’s role in keeping our school safe. Encourage your child to tell a school administrator or a teacher if they have information or hear rumors that cause them concern about safety at school. Let them know the school will promptly investigate and maintain confidentiality. Speaking up is often the best prevention.
