I was reading through the Hook’s article on Bedford County’s online child porn tracking group until I stumbled up the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children’s Task Force MySpace web page. WOW.
A myspace page with baby’s looking at porn? YES.. or no?
This stuff is kinda weird. I mean why does this group have a myspace? Does it weird you out that they are probably stalking your every move online. Now that I visited their site are they going to reveal my identity to cVillain? Notice the crazy music on the page? Funny or what? I don’t know what to think.
Just stop the child porn freaks and leave myspace to the kids.Â

Well its gud to have this else there would be so many cyber crimes which people may never think of…..so in a way its gud…but yes the personal space should be intruded to a extent…
Honestly, pedofilia fascinates me. It’s can be one of the scariest and most emotional topics ever. Somehow I find it absolutely hilarious. Perhaps that’s some kind of defense mechanism based on my own emotional issues. Back off! When my wife and I moved to Charlottesville, one of our neighbors came knocking on our door to to make his court ordered announcment. “Sorry to bother you, sir, but the court has mandated that I announce to all my neighbors that I have been convicted of a sex crime.” He had the air of a guy selling magazines. It took all I could muster not to laugh at him. “Aw, man, that sucks,” I was all I could think to say. Then my wife got on the child molester site with all thier pictures on it, and there he was staring smugly back at us from the internet hehind his swell mustache.
Also, we found another guy we know from Richmond who had been the victim of a lying 17-year-old college freshman’s parents pressing charges on an unknowing 20-year-old college junior. Really sucks for him, too. He’s gotta sell magazines for the rest of his life because of that crap.
Gobbler – a 20 year old having sex with a 17 year old isn’t what bothers me, this is the kind of news that bothers me.
link to story about people who need to be euthanized
Sometimes I miss the constant threat of thermonuclear annihilation…
Oy, euthanized? I’m sure an argument for euthanasia could be made here (as opposed to ‘treated’, ‘incarcerated’, ‘executed’, ’sterilized’, etc.), but it would certainly be an interesting one (and not the usual sort of argument made to support the execution of these sorts of folks).
Pedophiles are diseased – they need to be put down. Thus, euthanasia.
Euthanisia would be putting them down for their own good, e.g., mercy killing. You could make an argument along those lines here (e.g., living with the disease is worse than not living at all for the person with the disease), but I think most times we are more concerned with the potential victims.
By comparison, we ‘destroy’ a dog that has attacked someone, but we ‘euthanize’ a dog whose cancern has progressed to the point where the dog’s suffering is too much.
let me clarify – my “bullet in the back of the head” desire is for those who actually abuse kids.
There’s a special place in hell (and prison) for those who download and get off on kiddie porn, but watching isn’t the same as doing.
from the American Heritage Dictionary:
Euthanasia: n. The act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment.
I note nothing about motive or mercy in that definition, though I recognize its common usage. If, for some reason, a symantic error gave you the impression that I felt pity for pedophiles, let me assure you that’s not the case
oy, I didn’t read it that way.
Hi Craig. Welcome back to the party. Help yourself to beer, and there might be some unfiltered Pall Malls in the kitchen.
Nothing pleases me like a dictionary throw-down, even (especially?) where it turns pedantic:
AH: ‘The act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment.’
MW: ‘the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy’
OED: ‘1. A gentle and easy death. … 2. The means of bringing about a gentle and easy death. Also transf. and fig. … 3. In recent use: The action of inducing a gentle and easy death. Used esp. with reference to a proposal that the law should sanction the putting painlessly to death of those suffering from incurable and extremely painful diseases.’
I would note that all three make reference to the root greek, which this text box won’t let me copy, except in quasi-phonetic form, ‘euthanatos’, eu meaning good, thanatos meaning death.
Although there is some variation between the three definitions, all do suggest that the good is supposed to be from the point of view of the subject. In other words, torturing someone to death because the torture is good for the rest of society does not seem to be what is at issue here, although some might argue that it would still be in some sense a good death.
Moreover, there is some suggestion that a euthanasia good death is a death that is not itself needlessly painful (which might include, e.g., the intent behind all Western capital punishment). However, some of the usage notes (see the OED, for example) suggest that the death itself must be a good for the subject. That is, the subject must be in some sense better off for dying, making it a good death and not just a not bad death. Consider:
* ‘Give me but gentle Death: Euthanasia, Euthanasia, that is all I implore.’
* ‘An euthanasia, an abridgement of the pangs of disease.’
* But consider, ‘Absolute monarchy..is the easiest death, the true Euthanasia of the British constitution.’
In this case, a lot might turn, e.g., on what you mean by suffering. Is a pedophile suffering from pedophilia? I.e., is the pedophile in pain from the pedophilia? Does the end of their life relieve that pain? In any case, one might be concerned that broadening the scope in that sense might erode the usefulness of the term, for then, as I suggested, most capital punishment would be euthanasia, dying in one’s sleep would be euthanasia, the immediate victims of the atomic bomb blasts in Japan would have been euthanized, etc. But these usages seem awkward, and not what we mean when we debate whether euthanasia should be legalized, for surely we don’t mean that, if euthanasia is declared illegal, all deaths should be made to be painful.
(All of this, of course, doesn’t change the point that you are making. Like I said, I was just in hunt of a dictionary throw down.)
that was long.
ugh “symantic” – can you tell I’m in the ‘puter biz? “Semantic”, of course.
Lilith – I don’t think Craig read it that way either, I was just being a little facetious and disingenuous in response to his pedantry, and assumed no aspersions of pederasty
(pot.kettle.pedant)
dammit! Beat me to the draw in using the ‘pedant’ stick.
I retort: many studies suggest that pedophillia is the result of childhood sexual abuse, so, I would posit, yes to your questions: “is the pedophile in pain from the pedophilia? Does the end of their life relieve that pain?”
Oh, and if we’re gonna get all Greek (seriously, no pun intended), pedophilia means “child love”, a definition I find disturbingly “un-focused”
to some extent, i agree with you oy. at the very least many of these people should never be on the streets again. especially without treatment. and they don’t get treatment in prison (for the most part). our justice system seems to fail to realize that most pedophiles, and serial killers for that matter, are mentally ill. ill in a way that isn’t going to go away. psychopathic and compulsive, they are unable to control their urges. some are remorseful, a lot are not, either way they’re not going to stop. “punishment” will not cure them. and many of them are also extremely intelligent and manipulative, managing to get out on parole for “good behavior” because they know how to work the system and go right back to where they left off. plus, we have to kick them out to make room for some random person who got arrested with pot for the third time. big danger to society there.
we have this idea in this country that being declared “not guilty by reason of insanity” means the person somehow beat the system. not true. they’re sent to a mental institution for an undetermined amount of time. a psychiatrist then gets to decide whether they’re a danger to society and whether to release them. it’s harder to manipulate a psychiatrist than the system. there are problems with every system, i’m not saying mental institutions are the perfect solution. but it’s better than getting out on parole after serving 10 years of a 25-life sentence without any treatment at all.
/apologies for ranting. getting down from soapbox now.
Yay Trillian!
thanks sil
rather off topic…(sorry) Nu2Cville:
i get the whole “nu” thing, and i may be sensitive- but REALLY, i can’t take anything you write seriously with the whole “gud” thing. it sorta makes me think you are some sort of bovine chewing your “cud”.
please, please take the time to type two “o”s and apologize to the “u” and promise to make up to it later.
REALLY. thanks!
I think it would be wise if we simply castrated sex offenders and pedophiles that have been proven guilty beyond a doubt. It takes away their drive and often times also their need to feel the power. It should be done publicly, like an execution would be.
@18: I second.
I definitely would have laughed at the guy knocking at my door, knowing that he’d had his junk removed.
Reminds me of “Little Children.”
@21 Ouch. Thanks, for that, lilith.
As much as I respect the professionalism of the Bedford PD, I think someone needs to tell them that fighting child pornography does not involve preventing babies from looking at boobies on the computer. That is a whole different problam.
