Highlights from the State of the University Address

  • Enrollment is about 70 percent in-state, 30 percent out-of-state, and comes from 48 states and 109 countries. I want to see someone name 109 countries. With their eyes closed and hands tied behind their backs. No cheating! Honor code!
  • The undergraduate student body is 55 percent female. (Cue up the whip-crack sound effect.)
  • The student body is about 25 percent minority, and the first year class is a third minority. Ahh. And now I’d like to have a moment on my soapbox. You know, there’s no way Jesus could have been “Caucasian.” And in the future, everyone will be a once-minority. I find this comforting, knowing haters are at the bottom of the intellectual evolutionary tract. Off the soapbox.
  • Of the University’s total budgetary needs, 9 percent comes from the state. I believe this is a 1 percent increase, but it still sounds like not much. Someone, please elaborate.

Wait, so affirmative action is less about providing opportunity, and more about sticking it to the Man?
