KIKI SOLD?

A little birdie is reporting that KIKI has been sold and employees have been given their pink slips. The buyer is local, according to the source.

Can anyone verify? I’m sad.

It would be a great business for an owner operator. No way there was much money in that place for multiple owners, hence the buy out of the origanal partnership. And even still, with someone working a lunch shift designed for nothing more than get some food on the books for the ABC there was no way that anyone was taking home much more than headaches given the vagaries of the particular business.

Oy, I’d be happy to go in there with you and cause a distraction if you wanted to make off with a particular barstool you’ve grown fond of (and/or bartender {though maybe she’ll come back to her other drink-slinging job?})

I absolutely loved their drinks and I hope that someone (if not the next owner) in town picks up the fresh fresh fruit juice in your beverage thing Kiki’s did so well (sour mix is the twinkie of the cocktail world). Of course, I think not having patio space hurt them, as all their offerings begged to be consumed outdoors on a hot summer night.

Somebody out there has to know something… will it still be Kiki’s, will it be something completely different, am I going to actually have to make my own watermelon daquiries this summer… this lush needs to know!

/sad like the day Liquid closed

Funny, chatted with the owner just yesterday and she said nothing. Curious.

Please let this be just a brief hiatus. IMHO, Kiki serves the best drinks in town, and Sarah is an All-Universe bartender. Recently, I found another reason to go there: the new Israeli/Middle Eastern menu. The falafel, shawarma, grapes leaves, and salads were all beautifully seasoned and tasted authentic — which was explained when the chef told us that he had previously managed a restaurant in Israel. Prices were reasonable and service attentive.

The Upstart - I was hoping someone would prove me wrong here (that and I tend to drink at home most nights so I am no great authority when it comes to cocktails that aren’t made by me and my juicer). I know the Divide uses sour mix, as does Mono Loco when it comes to margaritas, and while I’ve had a mojito or caip-something I can’t spell at X, I don’t recall imbibing on anything with fresh squeezed lime juice outside of Kiki in this town… so basically I’m begging for your help here, where should I go for fresh squeezed juice (as in was still whole fruit four hours ago, not even Tropicana will cut it)?

I wasn’t joking about Barry at the C&O. The medieval grapefruit press is right at the bar. They squeeze to order. Don’t know if he’ll mull basil or mint or whatever for you, but probably. Just don’t ask for shooters. Especially don’t ask for Alabama Slammers. (And if I recall they make margaritas, but not frozen margaritas.)

Well, Guad has some oddball mojitos (coconut, etc.), but they don’t seem fresh and then there’s the “food”. I’d like some good tapioca or taro drinks back. Marco & Luca used to do it, and then the other restaurant in York Place that moved up the mall and immediately closed.

Reminds me of a Guad drink story. Happened about a decade ago. A wise-ass friend of mine with a very pronounced stutter ordered a margarita over there. On tasting it, he flags down the poor waiter. “There’s no f-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-ucking alcohol in this!” Which, of course, there was. He just wanted more. For some reason,, hearing it all said with a stutter gave quite the context to it. Funny guy. He works for the federal government in DC now.

Bartenders, get ready to pounce on me, and I do not mean that in a sexual way. Has anyone tried ordering a margarita with lime juice instead of sour mix? I hate sour mix with a distinctly sour passion, and since so little of it goes in a margarita, it doesn’t seem like the hugest chore in the world to squish four little lime wedges in a cup, especially when it’s a big tequila upgrade. (I would never do that if a bar was slammed.)

    Uncensored, alcohol-soaked chick perspective:

The drinks at Kiki were too heavy. I would look at that cocktail menu and fret about the sugar, sour mix, and/or simple syrup, followed by the price. All were noticeably viscous and tart. It’s not the worst thing in the world for a chick-drink, but if not for an awesome bartender and the promise of running into really cool friends while watching surf videos and creating naughty chalk drawings, I probably wouldn’t have chosen to start my nights there. I haven’t said it explicitly yet, but I have truth syrum in me, so… Bang has the best cocktail menu in this city. Not too many, not too few, traditional and innovative, sweet and sour. They get creative but stay strong. And it helps that the bartenders are just so cool.

Play around with ingredients like lychee, basil, wasabi, lavender, and langoustine.

Saxx was fun; I’d never been before. Could’ve used a few more people. Oy described it quite well. It’s a killer space…someone needs to turn that place into a great restaurant and late night party spot. Doof made a good point last night: that smaller back room would make for a good jazz spot, while the rest of the restaurant is too big and should be used for more things like last night.

Feeling surprisingly with it this morning.

  98. 15 Feb 2008 at 9:50 amdoof said:

My first time in Saxx last night too. That space feels very much like the upstairs at Starr Hill used to, it’d be great if they could get a multi-genre music thing going, ’cause this town can’t support/fill a space that big thats simply dedicated to jazz in my opinion. Cute bartender, where have I seen her before? Dj Payne needs a remote-control, so he never has to leave the dance floor.. Oh, and events like last night need to be promoted better if they want to get crowds of people to come to Belmont…

Michael and Relana will do something fabulous, they dearly love Kiki and will put their heart and soul into another wonderful space for us all to come and enjoy. I cant wait, and I wish them all the luck in the world. xoxo

not plate, “pate”. Buttery, melt in your mouth meat that was amazing on its own, but when paired with the mustard they give with it. omg.

Paired it with a wild boar stew and it was easily the best meal I’ve had in Bizou.

Likely going back tomorrow night - who’s in?

Oy - speaking of amazing slow cooked meat, Casis has short ribs as an appetizer now and they are excellent. I haven’t been to Bizou in at least a year, but just having wild boar on the menu is enough to bring me back.

Cosmo - I’m excited for the reopening, thanks for teh details and keep us posted on when the door officially unlock. Mmmmm, fresh fruity rum drinks.

Until yesterday, I didn’t know what a blog was, but it’s time for me to weigh in on this. Hearing the news was like receiving the news of the death of a close friend. Feeding people is my life’s work. It starts at 6:00 am and it usually ends around 9:00pm, seven days. I would not choose anything else, but there are “those days”. Kiki was my refuge, a place for me to re-create and blow off steam, to connect with friends new and old. On particularly difficult weeks, I could be heard saying out loud, “I need Kiki! Something about Kiki met a need that made it possible to return to my life without feeling cheated. I know I am not alone in this.
Cosmo. I remember you from the beginning. I tried to connect with you but you came across as aloof and annoyed with my presence. (pay attention, ‘cause it’s not just about the drinks) What evolved at Kiki was something quite rare. Among employees, there was a culture of mutual respect and understanding that could be felt by patrons. To me, Kiki was not about the paint, or the wide screen, or even the juice. It was about the people. IMHO, Jamaica is the most creative and artistic bartenders anywhere. I could throw her the most, vague and ridiculous B.S. about the kind of drink I wanted her to make me and she always nailed it, never judgmental or put off. I called her the drink shaman. Sarah was a breath of fresh air, always happy to see you, gracious, and willing to chat. She could pull forth a smile from the grumpiest of curmudgeons. A few minutes in Sarah care and you just knew the world would be okay. And what held it all together was Jeannie. Only Jeannie could attract and hold together such an eclectic and independent group of free spirits. How she did it was rather intangible, but patrons new they were in the presence of something special. Each trip to Kiki was unique, and never routine. And the people we met were always “open”.
Today, if I want an edgy and cool paint job, I can go to Lowe’s. If I want some retro surf flicks, I can go on line. If I want juice, I can go to Kroger. But if I want a place where I can feed my soul, a place that is like being in the home of a close, life-long friend,… then I just don’t know where to go.
