Ladies and gentlemen, it has to occurred to me in the wee hours of the morning that you are all studious and intelligent people. I frequent various places around town to do my studying. You probably do as well.
I’m interested in figuring out where you think the best place to study. By study, I do not mean eye candy. I mean actually sitting down and cranking through the books in a distraction-less, potentially caffeine induced environment.
Where is the best place to (actually) study in Charlottesville?

i only say alderman because i don’t emerge reeking of coffee when i study there. if smell was not a consideration, it would be java java on 250 all the way.
the law school library is nice, but i used to get yelled at as an undergrad for going in there when i lived across the street. truth be told, in the end, my living room works just fine as well - and there’s always plenty of caffeine around. we’ve a fireplace too. you all should come over.
I haven’t actually studied in a long time, but when my wife was in law school a couple of years ago, I’d read while she studied at C-ville coffee. I remember we had to get there early on weekends, and it was sort of considered a secret place among her friends. But word of course spread pretty quick. I think it’s a great place to hang out/study.
Ditto for the new java java downtown. Some coworkers still in college/law school loved it as a place to study.
Lastly, the law school library always felt really intense to me. Which maybe is a good thing if you need to study.
BA in Studio Art. Studying? I have heard of this ritual, but never participated.
oddly enough, I frequent Panera to study. I can refill my fountain drink as often as I’d like and the wireless is usually pretty consistent. Plus, I really like their honey walnut cream cheese on a toasted bagel *yummy*
@4: It amazes me that the only place on the downtown mall with both drink refills and wireless internet is Miller’s. The Box should fit the bill too, though, if they ever actually open.
I used to study at Baja Bean in my student days. They were always dead on Sunday nights and queso dip helps me think.
@5 Ssshhhhh! Miller’s (upstairs if you don’t smoke) is a great place in the afternoon for reliable, quiet ‘net access. Especially since the owner returned about a month ago, fired half of the staff, cleaned it up, changed the menu/beer selection, etc. It doesn’t stink in there anymore, and there isn’t a junkie waitron in sight.
Wait! Disregard everything I’ve just said! It’s a horrible, filthy place and they will eat your kids if left unattended! Avoid it at all costs!
i was very partial to c-ville coffee back when i was studious. it’s not super quiet, but i like working around some chatter and hubub. i still go back sometimes when i’m working on lines, because learning lines around some noise and activity is the only way i can then remember them onstage.
During my studious days, Alderman library was the place for me. Waaaay back in the stacks, surrounded by musty books, tucked away in a carrel with my study materials. But, that was during the day of pen and paper, when pc’s were DOS based, and Apples had screens the size of a postcard. Welcome to the Internet? What the f*&# is the Internet?
Much of my first year was spent on the bottom floor of Clemons. By second year, I was told rumors of lice and other buggies in the cushions, and I decamped to the comfort of my Brown College (woo!) abode.
I used to study at Panera too, but recently I noticed that they kick you off their wireless after 30 minutes during their “high-peak” time (from 11:30 - 2 every day of the week). So now I just study at Mudhouse, which is too loud for most people, but I need a little background noise to concentrate.
the past few sundays, i’ve been found at a booth in mcgrady’s with casebooks, highlighters, and a pitcher. lack of wireless internet is actually really helpful! i figure slightly tipsy studying, with short breaks to play pool, is more productive in the long run than sober studying, with gigantic breaks to facebook stalk and blog surf.
also, the library option lacks the key qualities of a) 10 judgement wings for $2.50, and b) my drunk friends
for two years i spent more time at starbucks than my bedroom. my last year i spent mostly in greenberrys - often enough to recognize (and know the difference between) the morning and evening regulars. but with all the places to study inside, you can’t beat heading out to one of the gardens on a sunny day with moderate temps, even if it means disrupting your studies to relocate/recharge.
