Van Halen got canceled (or so we heard), so there have got to be some more things to do this weekend.
In no particular order, my top 4:
- UVA Dance Marathon Party - Friday, 10PM to raise money for UVA Children’s hospital.
- Old School Freight Train - Friday, 7:30PM at Gravity Lounge.
- Ryan Shaw is playing at Outback at 8PM TONIGHT. He was scheduled to open for Van Halen. Read more at 106.1. D/R told me that 106.1 auctioned off Ryan to the highest paying venue this afternoon.
- Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit/Will Hoge @ Satellite 8PM on Saturday

Trying a new layout this evening, with music in the side room and wired through the stereo on the bar side. We shall see how this works out…
really? lemme check spam folders.
AHHHHH which one is your favorite, so I can delete the extras?
what else what else?
has anyone ever been to Uncle Charlie’s?
#2 please. I am not spam.
ooof. The dirt I gots on Uncle C’s. Crozet is too small a town.
If you like the band, its a fine venue, though.
@1 Nice graphic, b yo. I have yet to see one of yours I don’t like.
Thanks street, they’re fun to do. GIS, Photoshop and the Adobe Type Library… Im no foody, but that recipe always lights me up.
@ 1 nice boobs B yo
Well, boob. Maybe. I would love to do practically pornographic posters, but escafe hangs them on their wall, so I imagine there are some limitations. I have pushed the limit at times though…
check some old ones…

Yummy.
Get with the program Villains, this 2008 Grammy-nom emo souls star Ryan Shaw is making a surprise show at the Outback tonight to make up for VH cancelling JPJ (supposedly). I type in haste.

At least 1 cVillain will be pouring in the Tasting Room at Veritas on Sunday. Come say hello…
colfer.. is that #3?
You are #6.
Who is #2?
I am not a number, I am a free man!
@15 your #1
Don’t go to Ryan Shaw. He’s a douchebag. We saw him at Gravity a while back and 1-he played in long underwear (barf) and 2- he freaked like a little girl when my 115lb roomie tried to dance on the stage, having security come whisk her off like she was a huge threat or something. He should be happy she acted like she liked his shitty music.
@1:
since i have been there, but not tonight(just reading through this)- how did that work out?
ie: did the tables get moved out of there, or was it just dancing around the upturned chairs?
@11(back to you) do you notice the fliers have any sort of affect on the night’s groove?
and@17:
that IS dumb he had security do that. at a free show, no less… say you saw them when (mutters under breath) take off the 45’s i now say…
Made it to the box last night, where barman David made a mean Saigon ‘66 (lemongrass martini). Interesting menu there, based on “box” offerings of various asian noodles with add-ins, plus wraps, salads, sushi, miso soups, and sides. The onion rings were fine, piping-hot and crisp with panko crust and ginger-infused ketchup. This weekend, food is only in the evenings but they plan to add lunch beginning Monday.
Other Friday night highlights: - Taking communion at MSWS. Wine directly from the virginal hands of one Sister Acorn. Truly a religous experience. - X lounge, to pay respect to the stainless waterfall with a function that dares-not-speak-it’s-name and to snark at the notion of a rum-based “caipirinha.” - Cassis, for fried oysters and Paulaner (and La Chouffe). Bonus celebrity cameo appearance by the radiant and vivacious Sarah.
@5 Uncle Charlies is hit or miss and Im not sure what makes it either. I have seen good bands there with no crowd and I’ve seen poor bands and it is packed. If it is full on Friday it will be empty Saturday and vice versa. If you like wings get the jerk, they are very good. It is also good for second hand smoke.
“Poe and All That Jazz” at Live Arts’s 4-th floor room. I saw the same production at Hamner Theatre in Nellysford, and it’s worth seeing for Patti Finn alone, as a sort of goth mother/sister/bride singing really really well. The story is Poe’s life, complete with dorky UVa Range desk, punctuated by the goth mistress singing jazz standards. Audience laughed heartily at some of those diva lines. Accompaniment good too. Bonus points if you can i.d. where you’ve seen the evermore shrinking violet Poe actor near the Downtown Mall. But Patti Finn and the musicians by far take away the show.

It’s tonight. The publicity did not seem to reach far. Missing from the Hook. Mistaken location in C-Ville, it is at Live Arts, not in Nellysford this time. Peter Coy wrote it.
oh, didn’t know that. I don’t really go to Gravity since I don’t like sitting down to watch shows, did dig Stevie J there though
@21, thanks for the tip. Tonite at 6 pm!
Is the Poe actor the same guy who was so good as the title character in Amadeus, and hangs at the rug place next to Daedalus book store?
Jes guessin’
that’s a pretty ballsy name, 23. a few years back that would have landed your ass in gitmo.
21 & 23, I’ll be there, too. I’ll be the one without a long beard.
It kills me to see excellence go unrecognized. Last night at Live Arts, before an audience of fewer than 20 people (maybe only a dozen or so), the musicians, crew and cast put on an amazing performance of Poe and all that Jazz.
Jon Cobb was Poe. Powerful, crystalline delivery of difficult material, with nice elements of physical acting and even a bit of hoofing. Patti Finn, who glided between several roles, vamped convincingly and belted out the standards. And Bob Bennetta, pianist, and Jim Ryan on bass were superb.
We Cvillians are fortunate to have so much talent at our doorstep. Support your local theater!
They even let me take my beer back in after intermission.
Patti Finn was a lot better than a “belter” when I saw her. Cobb I wasn’t as keen on, but maybe they transmogrified.
So that room is pretty small. Was it half full at least? Accurate listings in the Hook & C-Ville woulda helped. 4th floor Live Arts is a mysterious place. Things go on up there. The performance area, I mean. But they don’t always get on the calendar.
@24 a few years back that would have landed your ass in gitmo.
I had considered Osama Bon Jovi, but cooler heads prevailed.
Will no one have the courage to take up the monicker “Recycle Bin Laden”?!?!
I took out my recyclables last night. The bin was Over-Laden.
Ok, @27, let’s say that Finn was a “belter and suspender.” Whatever….we agree that she was darn good.
The venue - Rehearsal Space A - was about half full. More media attention certainly might have attracted a larger crowd.
So,
Was anyone at Rapture on the night of the 21st? Any truth to these Van Halen fallout rumors?
Has this been totally discussed in another thread and I missed it?
No, we didn’t discuss. The rumor was that some of the band members got in a fight at Rapture and that’s why they didn’t do the show.
