What do you think of The Box?

That’s pretty much it. I’m holding my thoughts until I visit a few times.

Made it to the box last night, where barman David made a mean Saigon ‘66 (lemongrass martini). Interesting menu there, based on “box” offerings of various asian noodles with add-ins, plus wraps, salads, sushi, miso soups, and sides. The onion rings were fine, piping-hot and crisp with panko crust and ginger-infused ketchup. This weekend, food is only in the evenings but they plan to add lunch beginning Monday.

Other Friday night highlights: - Taking communion at MSWS. Wine directly from the virginal hands of one Sister Acorn. Truly a religous experience. - X lounge, to pay respect to the stainless waterfall with a function that dares-not-speak-it’s-name and to snark at the notion of a rum-based “caipirinha.” - Cassis, for fried oysters and Paulaner (and La Chouffe). Bonus celebrity cameo appearance by the radiant and vivacious Sarah.

@5 Yep. I have the rare Saturday evening off. I will wander everywhere downtown, and perhaps even get me some fried oysters. Who’s playing at OXO, X, or anywhere of the other 516 dj dance parties? I would just like to be on the other side of the tables for once. I haven’t been out on a solo creep in forever. I hope to have many peculiar conversations.

I have only one “criticism”, which has nothing at all to do with the restaurant… the guy that sat next to me at the bar had on so much cologne that I think I am now sterile. How his companion stood it without having her eyes water and her flesh blister is beyond me. Why do people do that? Obnoxiously and pro-actively insecure, I guess.

    Anyway, thanks for the tip.

You said @20, “No dancing chefs though. The word I would use is laconic, in fact.” The Dance of the Chefs certainly is a study in composure; true dat. If you’ve ever tried cooking to order 20 different dishes for 100 people, you appreciate a good kitchen’s graceful economy of motion and emotion. I second the recommendation (from Lilith?) of the book Heat for additional insight.

    Back to topic.

I recently went to the box and thought it was excellent! I was hungry an hour later (so order the big one and take a to go box), but it was worth the money. The food tasted great! The curry was spicy, but not so spicy the average joe couldn’t handle it. The noodles (and options for different noodles) were outstanding, cooked just the right amount. My chicken was perfectly done and went well with the curry.

The service was great and the atmosphere was relaxed, which I appreciate. They have some good looking servers (including a young chica for the guys) and more importantly, they serve alcohol (so even if the servers weren’t good looking you would still want to take one home after 7 or 8 drinks).

I am not sure if there was music this weekend, I didn’t go this weekend, but that would have been a nice addition to the all around excellent meal.

I had dinner at The Box tonight, and I must say that it was fantastic. My date and I ordered the onion rings, veggie dumplings, cellephane noodles with panang curry sauce and chicken skewer, and the scallion pancake with the pork skewer — everything was off the chain(especially since all that food only cost about 17 bucks!).

We also tried the watermelon julip, lichee margarita, and Saigon 66, and all of those were the ill na-na.

If I had a choice between The Box and Atomic, I’d have to go with The Box.

Extra props for the Mr. Miyagi painting by Jeremy Dunn!

  91. 26 Feb 2008 at 11:24 am

Also grabbed some takeout from the Box last night. It was great. Had an order of the lettuce wraps.
Would have more to say if I’d eaten there, but was on the way out with catering. Here’s my quick impressions. Very busy for when I was there–considering a nasty, monday night at about 5pm, they were pretty full with drinkers and diners. Decor was cool–felt clean and urban, yet inviting. The Miyagi painting/mural is awesome. Great idea.
About the food: I had the lettuce wraps (we had dinner waiting at home, but thought it would make a good app), and everything about them was good. The bibb lettuce was crisp, the vegetables were well seasoned, and perhaps trickiest–the avocado was perfectly ripe. This was just plain, mashed avocdo, so you can’t hide its ripeness or lack thereof with lemon juice, extra salt, and cilantro. But they had nothing to hide. I love avocados, and mine was perfect. Congrats to the Box on what I think is going to be a big success.

i also ate at the box last night and loved it. all i had was a beer and the dumplings, which nigh set my mouth on fire, but damned if they’re not putting marco and luca’s to shame. (and that’s something i NEVER thought i’d say). i’ll need to go back and eat more and more and more and more, but i like it a lot from just a short visit. nice folks, really nice redecoration, nice prices… what’s not to love?

i can’t wait for someone to get drunk enough to decide that climbing over the bar to smack the gong is a good idea. maybe if it’s hit hard enough it can cause vibrations at the correct frequency needed to knock that stupid green construction wall down…

Just finished up at The Box.

It was awesome. I went with a fairly non-adventurous order because the whole concept was new to me (Teriyaki Pork Lo Mein - add chilis and crispy wontons). I couldn’t recommend that order enough, but I plan to change it up a bit the next time I go.

Our service was good, and it was good atmosphere/lighting for a break from work. However, I can imagine that it may be a little too bright for me once I lay into the sauce. Hopefully there are some dimmers?

Well I’ve never been to the Box and I loved it… except the noodles.

had my first lunch at the Box- hte onion rings were super yummy, but i could have used a tiny bit more of the super sauce that came with it.

i got a box of noodles for later. i had a couple bites and i look forward to taking some more.
i was worned that adding the chilies would make it spicy. apparently some patron earlier was surprised by this.
    (when are chilies not hot?
/when they are chilly, i suppose
    )

i definitely like the deco and feel- the tables are nice- the color/painting, seats along the wall- i don’t miss the freestanding island table what-so-ever.

    and…
i noticed the bottom of the receipt read “hide your cats”

    :)

also, travis elliot will be playing there tonight.

@110- when the Box first opened, i was very intrigued by the lemongrass martini…
it was okay. but as with Ten’s ginger martini-(when they opened), drinks like that seem to fall to pander to the sweet drinkers drinks. adding simple syrup.

give me vodka or gin with some oriental plant flavoring instead of olives. maybe a squeeze or zest of citrus.

Stopped in for a quick takeout. Very similar to London’s Wagamama (now in the Boston Quincy Market area). Got the small box with Udon, Panang curry sauce, hoisin pork, basil, and peanuts. Well worth it, and a fraction of Wagamama’s price.

Hello robert davis… may I welcome you to the party in the traditional way. The ginger beer and cheese puffs are on the buffet along with the capital letters for nouns, and the bowl of onion rings may be used as extra ‘o’s… whoops I see you already helped yourself to those.

A little birdie told me that the Box’s owner got into a little trouble recently. Alcohol and fire do not mix! Ok, they do, but it’s always gonna be a volatile situation. ’nuff said.

Oh that’s too bad you were at the Box and not at Ventana, where the owner was pasing out free El Dineros for CVillains then his wife and I arm-wrestled butt nekked. Ok, only one of those things really happened.

@ 119 It’s not always about drinking alone (or the naked lady wrestling), sometimes it’s just about running into strangers and feel an odd sense of affinity. That just doesn’t happen to me very often.

Btw. Next time there is naked wrestling, send me a text.
