StreakTheLawn Shuts Down

Our little baby sister, StreakTheLawn has shut down after an editorial in the Cav Daily and our recent post about “Gossip sites ruining UVA.” :(

Cloudbrain’s blog reads:

A recent post on the CVillain blog mentioned us at being behind a new UVA blogging site gaining some recent press. Several UVA students, with help from Cloudbrain, launched a “gossip”-focused blog at UVA a few weeks ago. The desire was to explore social media and the changing face of publishing on the Internet - as well as to celebrate fun and social life at UVA. Thanks to some other, more scandalous, sites the blog has found itself in the middle of an interesting conversation regarding publishing, anonymity, privacy and appropriateness. We have taken the site down.

But, why? Strength in NUMBERS!!

i for one am totally okay with this. i maintain that association with them would have been detrimental; at least one or two people here have a few brain cells to rub together. i’m not so sure about the people who were posting over there.

note that i’m not including the cloudbrain folks in this. but man, that site huuuuurt.

lastly, the swicki right now has “patience alpha virginia wombat” as its biggest hits. i’m not sure why that amuses me, but it does…

The big difference between this blog and the UVa one is that they still believe they have a bright future and have yet to get that first job or grad school admittance.

We cvillain’s are more secure in (or resigned to) our future/fate.

It was an interesting experiment. Unfortunately, things got out of hand pretty quickly. The goal was to play with social / new media in the university setting and see where things went. We learned some good lessons (a chief one being the difficulty of controlling people’s perception of the word “gossip”). We have a lot of cool stuff in the works over here (at Cloudbrain) and it wasn’t worth compromising all that to stick with the site. The intention was to create a new type of student-focused publication, not get in the middle of a fight over privacy and appropriateness.

We did get some pretty cool custom blog (wordpress) improvements out of it if anyone is interested…

I gotta say, as a fan of other Cloudbrain products (such as curbplaces), streakthelawn.com was seriously weak.

The fake picture of Jenna Bush (”she’s behind this guy”) as breaking news was a classic though.

I wouldn’t expect this crowd to ‘get’ streakthelawn, but it was getting some serious traffic — so there certainly is an audience there. It’s certainly a different audience though.

I think that it’s a shame that StreakTheLawn didn’t last longer… I think that the “Corner Crowd” has much more exciting stories to offer than some other crowds(hint…hint…) We may not be stuck in a job (which we may or may not like) and that’s the beauty of UVa undergrads… we’re here. we’re privileged. the world is our oyster.

Do I really have to say it? I guess nobody else is going to…
itGUY: Um, STFU. All the “Corner Crowd” has to talk about is drinking and hooking up. And who is this stuck in jobs they don’t like?
Ahh, I *adore* the hubris of twenty-year olds….hey, that’s one of them college-y words right there, mmhmm.
