D/R sends this in… and also lets you folks know that there is indeed a soft opening tonight at The Local, but the official opening is this Thursday. The menu looks awesome. Click below to see the whole menu. I’m loving it.

What? No tartare?
I for one will enjoy both of the lonely two vegetarian options, if only to defend you from the cocoNUTs.
Do these people realize salmon don’t actually have wings?
oops! skimmed, didn’t read. many more options than two.
Oh Lu Sid, of course salmon have wings! I can’t believe you are starting up this old argument.
Menu looks great, now to see how they handle thwe execution side of things (but probably not until this weekend after I get paid).
/here’s hoping the wine list is 100% local
i meant isn’t
/giving up for the day
Yea. That menu actually does look extra delicious. Can’t wait to try.
mmm, Carbonara - dead simple, yet easy to fuck up. Can’t wait!!
Note the Truffled Mushroom Ragout. Would that be with truffle oil or real truffles? (At only $6/12, I’m guessing that, understandably, it’s truffle oil.) In fact, the prices seem damn reasonable across the board…..
Aye, Lys, it would be cool to see the drink/wine menu
add cured meat … $4
How much if the meat’s still sick?
“now to see how they handle thwe execution side of things”
They still do that in Virginia? In upscale restraunts? Oh the humanity!!!
Oh Lu Sid, of course salmon have wings! I can’t believe you are starting up this old argument.
Is it Chicken of the Sea?
Which came first, the chicken or the sea?
Hahaha! Here I thought that was a legitimate question. The sea, by the way.
Well, you are always right….
The Tuna Steak Frites looks good to me.
Oysters and beet risotto, and Pepsi products. Thank you, Local, I will see you soon.
looks good- perhaps the sweetbreads are on the specials menu
Lets see if they can keep the prices near where they are right now. Fearless prediction is that they go UP sooner than later. I really hope they don’t but there is no way they can do the volume without it. Menu does look balanced and I look forward to seeing if it gets pulled off. Good luck…..
unimpressed
@7- Only if they go raw eggs, and I am not sure that the health department allows that these days.
@7 and @21
Check out the local health regs if interested: http://www.healthspace.ca/vdh
Re: eggs, etc., copied and pasted below.
12 VAC 5-421-700. Raw animal foods.*
D. A raw animal food such as raw egg, raw fish, raw-marinated fish, raw molluscan shellfish, or steak tartare, or a partially cooked food such as lightly cooked fish, soft cooked eggs, or rare meat other than whole-muscle, intact beef steaks as specified in subsection C of this section, may be served or offered for sale in a ready-to-eat form if:
The food establishment serves a population that is not a highly susceptible population; and
The regulatory authority grants a variance from subsection A or B of this section as specified in 12 VAC 5-421-3570 based on a HACCP plan that:
Is submitted by the permit holder and approved as specified under 12 VAC 5-421-3580,
Documents scientific data or other information that shows that a lesser time and temperature regimen results in a safe food, and
Verifies that equipment and procedures for food preparation and training of food employees at the food establishment meet the conditions.
More on point…
The menu looks interesting. If you the C&O, I’ll bet you like the Local. Also, if I lived in Belmont, would be nice to be able to walk out to eat and drink.
Well I went tonight, not knowing that a “soft opening” is an invite only affair (thanks, foodies, for letting me know this). So while I was not able to eat, one of my favorite bartenders was working the bar and I did manage a couple of drinks, and a brief tour from the owner (super nice guy). It is amazing inside! Absolutely beautiful upstairs and down. And when they finally finish the upstairs backside deck, that will surely be a favorite hideaway come warmer weather. The food was whizzing by left and right and it certainly looked good, but you know me, I will eat pound cake & green beans, so what do I know… I will definitely be back once they are officially open.
All that looking at food got me all hungry, so I decided to bust down to the box, which was also awesome, but you guys have covered its noodly goodness into the ground so its old news (good to see you there thatgrrl & guy!).
Looks like every single pretentious menu I have seen in this town or elsewhere. A tufted titmouse served w/ a braised chevre encrusted mushroom sauce w/ a nude cranky man reduction. Color me…whatever. But, I’m excited! Let the circle jerk commence.
There is a connection to the C&O but I can’t explain it right now.
A tufted titmouse served w/ a braised chevre encrusted mushroom sauce w/ a nude cranky man reduction.
I’ll pass on the nude cranky man reduction and the circle jerk chicken, though I must admit some of the offerings have me drooling. What is up with Tofu “Steak”? Do vegetarians enjoy consuming soy products that are made to resemble meaty delights? If I ever see tempeh “sweetbread” or tofu tartare, I’m going to cry.
the owner f the local is Dave Simmons cousin (aka, The owner of the C&O)
Dave Simpson, not Simmons
Sorry dude I have not had my coffee yet. Day light saving time thing going on.
I don’t get it. Is is Greek, Spanish, or Italian? Perhaps it’s Gritalian?
Shen, you just got the “Fritalian” song from that stupid Dunkin Donuts commercial in my head.
hahaha
I really like the price range of the menu. Unfortunately I was too tired to make the soft opening but am looking very forward to checking it out. A few birdies have told me very good things!
Looks like a great use of Century Gothic. Classy font. Classy menu.
Tuffy speaks my language!
I was thinking Futura book, but by god you are right!
horray for late night fockin menus! to never eat on the corner again!
That sounds kinda dirty colfer. You work for Eliot Spitzer?
I’m hiring Ken Starr to investigate towel snapping in the Pentagon from 2001 to 2006, and voluntary dungeon fun in the Old Executive Office Building to this very day. Has anybody figured out what that fire in December was to cover up? http://www.wtop.com/?nid=116&sid=1313087

I just presumed they were disposing of the most recently retired Cheney-bot.
@ 27: There are many possibilities:
1. Some vegetarians are converts (for dietary or moral reasons) and they are used to eating meat in every meal. Substitutes allow them to eat something that has a seems simliar and this helps with the transition.
2.Some may eat fake meat because they really do like the taste of meat, but can’t bear the thought of the animal’s death. So fake meat=less guilt.
3. Or simply enough, fake meat has less fat and cholesterol.
I for one, having chosen to give up meat for both ethical and health reasons do not crave meat but end up in situations where memories make me want something like what I used to eat, a sort of food nostalgia.
If I go to a carnival or barbecue, I think, “hot dog”. I don’t actually want a hot dog. A tofu dog will do just fine. But that’s what comes to my mind at that place. Because we all are ingrained with a sort of food dogma, influenced by what we are used to; what we were raised on. that fake shit helps. You don’t believe me go look at some deets on the meat substitute market.
But that’s enough. Time to party!
I hate meat substitutes that taste like meat. I don’t eat meat because I don’t like meat, just the same as some of you feel about brussel sprouts or whatever.
But when I am at a carnival, I think “being groped inappropriately by a drunken crowd of midget carnies with clammy hands” and well… there is just no substitute for that.
…memories make me want something like what I used to eat
Who makes a tofu groundhog? Have to look into that…
The fake meatloaf at Maya is surprisingly awesome, and it actually does taste kinda like meat despite being made with a mashup of beans. And this is coming from someone who is decidedly NOT vegetarian!
i’m not a vegetarian, & i love all the fake chickens i’ve had at ming dynasty. and fake sausage patties are really good for breakfast.
The fake meatloaf at Maya should be called lentiloaf. I do not care for lentils. It would have been nice to know the lentil-to-other-veg ratio of most:some.
Lentiloaf has a nice ring to it, though, doesn’t it?
the faux meatloaf at maya is DELICIOUS.
and you needs to eat your lentils Lil, they are a good source of protein.
I’m a veggie and eat the faux stuff because some of it is very tasty, not because it tastes like meat (I don’t think much of it really does). And I actually really like the taste of tofu. But I find I’m pretty alone on that, in general.
Big props to Morningstar products (green boxes), thumbs down to Boca products (red boxes).
Morningstar! Yummy! Particularly the soy breakfast “sausage” patties.
agree with 49 & 50. unfortunately, sam’s club sells only boca not morningstar. i’m discovering that 16 boca burgers is A LOT.
Do you have some sort of legal restrictions or situation that prevent you from shopping elsewhere?
Seriously, Boca tastes like meaty cardboard. There’s a reason they can provide Wally and Sam the quantities they no doubt demand.
Seriously, Boca tastes like meaty cardboard.
Yes, yes, and yes. Hold off for a sale on Morningstar black bean burgers, and then buy out the store.
(Okay, actually, leave some for me, but you get the idea.)
Yup. Tweeter runs 2 for 1’s all the damn time. I’ll clean out the freezer on those days.
I am going here Sunday. I am so sending back my salmon if it does not have wings.
I am so sending back my salmon if it does not have wings.
All that means is that the sauce is made with Redbull. Mmmm… energylicious.
A vegetarian eating fake meat is like a straight man sucking on a prosthetic penis. Just don’t make sense
What?! No actual wings?! I am so sayd.
@52, actually, i’ve only been there once in my life. i was overwhelmed. i bought a big box of boca burgers. probably won’t even go there again. but now i have the boca burgers.
Do we know if they are taking reservations, or are they taking after the crowded-standing-in-a-room-like-cattle approach of Mas?
Oh god. Reservations? Where’s my Xanax?
What? No good? I’m sure the topic of reservations must have been breeched here before… The place looks great, I just want to make a night of it and make sure that I’ll be able to actually get in, dig? I guess that I have to wait, I can always get an $8 Latte at La Taza.
After learning all the rules for *just* the libations, I am now phobic about fine dining. I mean if the rules of engagement for wine are so complex, I imagine the whole fork dilemma must resemble the Windows source code. And all those extraneous plates and glasses? They would just sit there and mock my ignorance endlessly, like the porcelain bastards that they are. Napkin usage? GAh! I mean I thought I knew, but now Im not so sure. Im just not so sure about anything anymore. Nothing! Damn you epicurean tyrants! A pox on your tartare for disheveling me so! *sob* Am I not human? If you prick me do I not bleed? I am a man and, I need sustenance and yet you only feed my neurosis with your chilling host of bizarre rules and regulation! *pant* Well says I, damn the torpedo shaped briskett, I will feed despite your cold wet chains of etiquette! I shall overcome!
So…
Maybe monday then?
FYI Information, the Local folks will take reservations. I called earlier and they ACTUALLY CALLED ME BACK and there it is. So far off to a good start. Finally, a place in Belmont that will take reservations.
I ate there last night. Soft opening=half price entrees! Yay! I think last night was the end of that, though. We were asked if we had reservations, as soon as we got in the door. Having just wandered by, post-Beer Run tasting, we did not, but were swiftly seated upstairs.
Service was excellent. Food, wonderful. ThatBoy had an amazing pork chop served with potatoes two ways (shoestring and mashed). It was cooked to perfection. Completely moist. The spice rub was a lovely addition, perking up what can be a lackluster cut in the wrong hands. I had the steak frites. The tamarind sauce was sooo good. Steak was a perfect medium rare, as ordered. Bright green broccoli on the side, not too soft, not too crunchy; just right. The frites were served in a somewhat amusing napkin-covered wire cone (mirroring the cones in which one receives Belguim frites in Europe). This helped keep them from getting soggy in the tamarind steak sauce. They could have still used a bit more crunch. Well, any crunch at all, but that was a very, very, VERY minor complaint as they were still quite tastey. Lilith will be happy to know that they have an excellent Malbec by the glass. Service was attentive, without being overbearing. Food well worth the price, even at full price. A super evening. We’ll certainly be returning!
I hear B Yo is DJ-ing at The Local. Is that true B Yo?
I heard byo is DJing at my house, at the X-Lounge at Mas and Cassis on Friday night.
I am dj’ing ALL THE TIME EVERYWHERE, apparently.
Next gig: 11am-1 pm at the 7/11 on Ivy Road. Then it’s of to the burn ward at the hospital for a quick set to put the sexy back into skin grafts…
I will keep you all posted.
you should do a belmont-bucketman-loudestflautist collaboration. i think my head would spin completely off my body.
If you add crazy dancey tambourine lady, I’m soooo there.
