I Saw You…and Him…Giving to Campaigns. You Were Writing Checks and I’ll Never Be The Same

[written by UVa LaGrape]

Did you know that..

Dave Matthews donated $2300 to Barack Obama?

The biggest 2008 election contributor in Cville is Stanley Woodward, a self-employed artist who donated $6300 to Obama’s campaign?

Patricia Kluge gave $4600 to Hillary Clinton?

How do I know this, and why is it legal for me to tell it to you?

The Huffington Post, the left-leaning opinion site of Arianna Huffington, created a search engine called Fundrace 2008 that allows you to search for every single citizen who contributed more than $250 to a presidential political candidate in 2008 or 2004. This information is already open to the public, but usually we see this info in the news as lists of the totals for each candidate. It’s a different level of “public” to have that data turned upside down to list the individual donors, searchable by any nosy neighbor like me.

http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/neighbors.php?type=city&city=charlottesville&search=Search

You can search by first name or last name, street address, city, state, zip, occupation or employer. That last one is interesting. You can search for employers like “CNN”, “NBC” or “Universal Studios” and find celebrities. Alan Tudyk (actor from 3:10 to Yuma) gave $250 to John Kerry in 2004. Barton Biggs, financial correspondent for CNN, gave $1500 to the DNC in 2004. Seth Meyers of SNL gave $1000 to Barack. Looking up employers can also give you a feel for the political bent of a company. Those 3 are heavily Democrat.

Charlottesville as a city is about 68/32 Dem/Rep in contributions. UVA is about 76/24 Dem/Rep. Uva is 100% McBain.

The site also has the side benefit of listing contributors’ addresses, jobs and employers, along with Googlemaps to their homes. Stalkers are erect with pleasure over this site.

Adding to the Stalker viagra is the Federal Election Commission’s website, which doesn’t have Googlemaps, but does include more details on each contribution (like the dates of the 3 contributions that led up to Stanley’s $6300 total), and contribution information dating back to the 90’s.

I found my friend “Samantha” on there and I like how she listed her occupation as “mom”.

You won’t find me on there because I’m too po’. But I did find my mom. How could she give Kucinich $500 when she owes me $200? I’m gonna hafta put the smackdown on that ho. Does Uva LaGrape hafta choke a bitch?

I’m mostly upset that I saw Dahlia Lithwick on there. I had no idea she lived here– she’s one of my favorite writers on slate.com. Like all great journalists, she helps me care about things other than myself, and in this case, it’s law review. Anyway, the Hook put her on its “hot seat,” and I had hoped to do something on cvillain.com for her. Dahlia, if you are reading this, I am a member of your unofficial fan club. If Slate ever goes away, I will literally not know what is going on in the world– it is my number one news source. I actually wrote Andrew Rice at one point to tell him how much I enjoyed his TP flare, and we exchanged e-mails a few times. Daniel Politi, I appreciate the consistency, and I imagine that working through the middle of the night all week is very difficult. Lindsay Barnes, if you are reading this, did you find Dahlia the same way I did? I would love to know.

    /but I digress.

3: What does that upset you, lilith? I’m a Dahlia Lithwick fan myself, but it didn’t surprise me that she has political preferences. It would surprise me if I could perceive those preferences in her objective reporting (vs. the more opinionated pieces on Slate or the WaPo op-ed page), but I never have, which is part of the reason I think she’s a solid reporter (e.g., Supreme Court coverage on NPR).

I’m a bit surprised she was able to do that. The”Posties” I know who work for the dead tree edition can’t contribute to political campaigns without getting hammered by the authori-tays on the masthead, but since she’s part of slate.com and (I’m assuming) Washington Post Interactive (which now runs Slate, IIRC), I guess there are different rules.

I agree that she’s very good at what she does. And that it’s great that she can do it from here.

Dahlia Lithwick: I don’t see where she has written as a straight journalist. Maybe she’s always been a columnist, an opinion writer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dahlia_Lithwick

Her work on NPR has been as a guest, not a reporter.

In the Hook it has “Most embarrassing moment? I once did CNN with a Cheerio in my hair.” That proves it! No, wait, it was this, “Subject that causes you to rant? The assault on civil liberties and the war on terror.” (March 6, 2008).

The C-Ville has an interview in Issue #18.23 :: 06/06/2006 - 06/12/2006 also. I would link but I don’t like it when they try to make me “moderated”.

11: good clarification, colfer. I was thinking of her NPR visits as times when she seemed objective, meaning she could talk about the Supreme Court and the cases before the Court without revealing her personal policy preferences on the issues at-hand. But I hadn’t realized that she’d never been a print reporter as-such. (She did used to be a divorce lawyer, though. Fact!)
