Vintage War Planes over Charlottesville?

A birdie sends this in…

Did anyone at cvillain just see the two vintage fighter planes fly over town?

I couldn’t get a very good picture, unfortunately.

Dogfights anyone?

mc, where are you? Tracking down the fighter-pilots?

/Didn’t see them, but my grandfather flew Corsairs off aircraft carriers, so I have a bizarrely warm and fuzzy reaction to fighter planes.

I heard (during a meeting) what sounded like it might have been an AT-6 – linkypoo – but it’s been a long time since I heard one in person. If the plane I heard was the plane in question, I don’t think it was a true “warbird” – didn’t sound like a Merlin or any of the larger engines, plus it was turning tight circles over the downtownish area so it was probably a smaller plane (biplane?).

Was one of them bright red? I haven’t seen it for a while, but I believe one (insanely wealthy?) Charlottesvillian owns a Mig 17 (picture). He used to fly around in formation with a T-38.

    oy,

i’m pretty certain it was a P-40. sorry, the one pic i managed to snap is completely worthless…it looks like a speck of dust in the sky.

but the planes both had the famous flying tigers teeth paint and the canopies looked similar to the wiki link pic i posted on my blog. i only saw them for a total of about 1 minute as they circled and flew off into the horizon.

any idea if there is an air show up north somewhere this week? my searches returned zilch in the VA area.

I’ll check for sure, but I think there are only a couple of flying P40’s currently, one is in WA (and doesn’t, I believe, have the sharks teeth).

i don’t remember any roundels or other markings but i could be wrong on that details as i was too excited and was scrambling for the binoculars.
